I think I've lost my marbles

I made a stack-n-whack (OBW?) quilt for my sister for Christmas and swore I would NEVER DO ONE AGAIN. It turned out pretty good (and she loved it) but the work involved just killed me and I wanted to just throw it all away at least twice.

So, being that I'm crazy, I've decided that since I resolved to put a quilt into the local county fair this year, I would (for some reason) need to do another dang kaleidoscope quilt and enter THAT.

Glutton for punishment. That's what I am. And crazy.

Here's the fabric I've decided to use... It's from JoAnns, it's Legacy Studio brand, called "Polynesian Master Medallions". Lovely bright colors with metallic edging...really eye popping. I hope it looks OK in the quilt and not too busy!

Right now my sewing room is packed full of furniture (we're having flooring installed all over the rest of the house) so I can only think and plan but I'm actually pretty excited about getting started on this. For a change I have ZERO UFO's but I will probably start a couple simple quilts too because I know I won't be able to grind away on this quilt without a distraction without losing whatever small grasp I have left on my sanity!

I'm with morelcabin, also. I'd like to see what you do with it also. I'd even be curious on what a stack & whack, would turn out. Eventually let us know

grammy Dwynn 03-05-2013 09:45 AM

Ah, but you 'learned' on the first one. The SECOND on will be soooo easy :)

Love the fabric and it does SCREAM ~ OBW, Kaleidoscopic or any Stack-n-Whack styles. ;)

Hulalulu 03-05-2013 10:10 AM

Great fabric choice -- agree with others -- you've cut your teeth on the first one! This should be a blue ribbon with the lovely colors and the design.

meldmac 03-05-2013 10:27 AM

Love the fabric! Can't wait to see your quilt.

quiltstringz 03-05-2013 10:31 AM

Wait - I can't believe it - are you sure you are a quilter? I don't think I have ever met one who didn't have at least 1 UFO (LOL)

the fabric is gorgeous and will make a wonderful OBW - to me the piecing on these is the easy part. Getting the fabric, cutting it and then figuring out your block placements are the had parts. That said I don't think I have ever done another pattern that kept me as interested throughout the whole process as this one. Even deciding which of the 3 ways to put your triangles together is intriguing.

QuiltnNan 03-05-2013 10:54 AM

that fabric should make an interesting and beautiful OBW/SAW.

MadQuilter 03-05-2013 11:55 AM

That will be so bright and happy.

Jackie Spencer 03-05-2013 12:07 PM

Its going to be stunning! Love that fabric, can't wait to see it done!!

sengell 03-05-2013 03:13 PM

How do you decide what fabric would be good for a stack and whack......I have never made one!

LynnVT 03-05-2013 03:16 PM

Sewnoma, sanity is highly overrated. Go for it! Love that fabric and bet it will be a gorgeous S&W.

Mariposa 03-05-2013 03:16 PM

Love that fabric!! Your quilt is gonna be fantastic! Looking forward to seeing it finished! :)

joyce888 03-05-2013 04:20 PM

I haven't made A OBW but want to. I've seen this fabric at JoAnns and thought the same thing - OBW.

mom-6 03-05-2013 05:25 PM

Love that fabric! Didn't get enough to do a OBW so if they still have it guess what I'm going to do. . .

mom-6 03-05-2013 05:29 PM

Sengell - the criteria I use for fabric for OBW is fairly large print with interesting variety of colors and shapes without excessive expanses of background color.
Tropical prints and many of the "oriental" prints work very well.

Although I cut my pieces out at random, I also had a mirrow book I used. My friend bought two dollar store mirrows and taped them together like a book. We then had a blast looking at all the material with our 'kalidiscope'.

x7lillies 03-05-2013 05:53 PM

I've worked with that exact fabric for this exact purpose! Well, it was a lap-sized quilt that I worked on with a friend, but I'm no stranger to OBW. I'm currently using that fabric to make some OBW potholders to sell. It's really fabulous when you put the blocks together. We were worried about the complexity and hard lines, but if you're careful and precise, it really comes out wonderfully. Have fun!

Fabric exactly like this-----------with various figures and various colors. This is bound to be in the "stunning" quilt collection when it's done

alikigirl 03-05-2013 07:56 PM

I haven't done a OBW so I don't know how hard they are, but a stacked 4 patch is very easy and fun. You just stack 4 repeats, and then cut squares and then sew them into a 4 patch. Love your fabric choice.

Donna 66 03-05-2013 07:58 PM

That's going to be fantastic!

mighty 03-06-2013 08:36 AM

Love the fabric!!!!

Quilter 65 03-06-2013 12:21 PM

Envy, envy, envy. This is my favorite pattern and that fabric is perfect for one, IMHO!! Please post results. I agree cutting out and assembly is the easy part. Placement or pattern is the tricky part. That one will be fabulous whatever you choose.

Luv Quilts and Cats 03-06-2013 03:57 PM

Your fabric is beautiful and will be great in a stack-n-whack. My first quilt big quilt was a stack-n-whack. It was fun and I would do another one. Especially if the fabric was as nice as the one you picked. Post a photo when you are done!

Lori S 03-06-2013 04:36 PM

The hardest part is the learning curve, and you done one so its going to be a lot easier. The fabric you selected is beautiful.

DACO48 03-06-2013 08:32 PM

I have the same fabric and I am planning to do a 4 patch posie. I just fell in love with the fabric. The colors are so fibrant and beautiful.

kathdavis 03-06-2013 09:33 PM

Love, love that fabric. Can't wait to see your quilt done.

DOTTYMO 03-07-2013 12:37 AM

What is OBW/SAW please .

kuntryquilter 03-07-2013 03:36 AM

I don't think you are crazy at all. I made a stack'n whack & really enjoyed the process.

fiberdiva 03-07-2013 03:53 AM

I used that same fabric to make pillowcases for a teenager and liked them so much I went back looking for more to make some for myself, but none was to be had. Enjoy using it!
