That is the one I have plus by office chair from Costco with no arms. Love both of them!

A few years ago I got a folding table on sale at JoAnn's for $50. It is about 3 feet wide and 5 feet long, but fold down to 3 by 1 foot and made of that white board that is a composite, not wood (like you see at home depot type places). There was a lot of criticism about it because the swing out legs didn't stay in their little slots, but I put little squares of industrial velcro on the tops of the legs and inside the holding place. I liked it so much and DH thought they were great (he got our table back to eat on) that he bought me 3 more! They are higher than a dining table and are so much easier on my back! I used to have a lot of back aches while sewing and because this one is higher it is much easier on the back. I like my sewing machine high so I don't have to stoop (none of this 90 degree angle for my arms for me!) Also, I can put a 10x6' quilt on these 4 tables, or arrange them so I have one w/the sewing machine on it, one slightly behind to the left for the bulk of fabric (big quilt) and one in front to let the finished part of my sewing slide away. I am constantly changing the configuration of those tables according to my needs. I've had them about 10 years now and wouldn't trade them for anything!

I think buying a sewing table is an investment because a good one is not cheap - so depending on your budget - these are the features that I would want- you need to have a machine lift so you machine is level with the table (usually involves a plastic insert). Storage space for notions and can close up for a neat look. I bought a put together table for around $500 which workes pretty well. My next table will be a cutting table as well as a sewing table - now I cut on my dinning room table and my back does not like it. One good brand is Horn but there are a number - they are not cheap!

If you use an embroidery machine, forget setting it down inside the table. And if you are versatile and do more than plain quilts you want your serger close and your straight stitch machine also. I think a U shaped arrangement would be the best in the world.

Build a box, attach on the bottom side to hold your machine (be sure to cut a hole for the cords). Add risers and you've got a very inexpensive sewing table.

I'm with Joyce!!! I had an old formica topped kitchen table with leaves..quilts slide like a dream on formica!! Had a guy cut out the hole and make a box for my machine..looks great and is just perfect for me! I prefer to pinch my pennies where I can, so that I have more money for fabric!

Check the resale shops, theres a lot of tables that can be used for a sewing table. Depending on the room you have, a small kitchen table would work. I have my mother in laws old singer cabinet, with a piece of glass on top of it. I placed my embroidery machine on this 'table' and it works great. Buying a 'sewing table' will cost more.
The possibilities are endless, just start looking around. Know the size you want, and the height you need.

Make your own perfect sewing table

Go to Office Max and buy a "personal table" (looks a little like a cocktail table but it has adjustable heights). Next go to Home Depot and buy an 18 x 24" 1/4" thick sheet of clear acrylic. I have made about 6 of these for myself and friends. Here's how: (If you have the tools, its easy to do it yourself and if you don't have the tools, find a friend that has them and here's what to do.....:) Counter sink holes for seven wood screws. Drill through the countersinks to accomodate the screws. Cut off 3/4" dowel rod at 3 1/2" lengths. (Cut 7). Purchase seven cheap white plastic tips for the dowel rods. To cut the opening you'llneed for your machine, lay the acrylic over the arm of the machine and mark where to cut with a permanent marker. Now you or your handyperson can cut the acrylic sheet opening using a jigsaw or a band saw. Also "round off" the four corners of the sheet with either the jigsaw or the bandsaw. Adjust the sheet so it fits the neck of your machine. Now attach the "legs" with wood screws. Now double check the height of the table to the neck of your machine. If it needs to go a little higher, I use pennies inside the caps to make the adjustment of the legs. Of course, if the legs are to long, you'll want to just cut them shorter. This makes an awesome sewing table that is wonderful. Now if you want a really large sewing table, Go to Amazon.com and buy 1, 2, or 3 2 ft x 4 ft adjustable height, folding tables and you will have a set up that will accomodate even a California king quilt for sewing on your domestic machine. Best of all, this is all portable and easily moved to wherever you need it. I had researched sewing tables, sewing cabinets, and everything in between. I came up with this combination and absolutely love it. I have four machines and I made acrylic tables for all of them. They each have their own "personal table" and when I need the super large work surface, I move the whole shebang into my family room and set up the folding tables around the machine wherever I need the support for the quilt. Good Luck and "Enjoy!"

I have to enter here. My first sewing table was a TV tray. Yes, the old metal ones. I sewed on that for years. Now I have one of the regular sewing cabinets. Can't think of the name right now. But it is nice.

This is my sewing table, its a Horn Quiltmate. I love all the room it has. It's 39"x60" when its opened fully out. It has a plexiglass insert that fits your machine's free arm and allows the machine to sit flush with table. I am a machine quilter. I have 4 machines that share this cabinet, just change out the insert. I've had my cabinet for about 12 years. the URL shows my cabinet.

I bought my table used, I don't know what brand it is, but I will tell you what I like and do not like about it to help you in making your choice. I live in a small townhouse and don't have much room. My sewing room is also a 9' x 11' guest room. The table itself is 20" deep by 48" long. It has a leaf that folds up to make it 40" deep. The support for the leaf is the full height of the table and rests on the floor, so it is good and sturdy. The table and support are on wheels. My table has an insert made for my machine. It has a hydraulic lift which makes is easy to raise and lower the machine. The cutout for the machine comes out and a solid insert goes in so I can use the table for cutting and other things. I can also use that when I have a guest, the machine is safely stored away below and the guest can use the table. It only has one drawer, but I was able to purchase Sterlite drawers which fit under that drawer and keep everything within easy reach. I have fibromyalgia which means I live with a lot of pain, the hydraulic lift helps a lot and I also use a chair on wheels with an adjustable back and height which helps me change the pressure points when I sew for any length of time. The table was expensive, even used, but for me it was worth it. I hope this helps. There were many good ideas on the thread, much cheaper ones. I appreciate everyone's input so much.

Here is a picture of mine it is 40" x 60" and move up and down to any height you need.... it also has a 40 x 60 cutting mat on it, and it pivots into an upright position when you don't need it. It is made by Horn - the people who make the sewing cabinets. I love it! It was quite pricey £700 but I think it was really worth it. Great for sewing on as it can be altered to the right sewing height so you don't get the sore back and shoulders and the same when cutting...no more bad backache!

One of the tables that I love is a $39 table from Sams. It has adjustable legs and I use one for cutting and I can lower it and it makes a great sewing table for me also. It is about 2X4. Inexpensive and for about $80, you can get a cutting table and a sewing table.

Thank you everyone for taking the time for these thoughtful responses. You are great! Now I have to decide, that will be the hard part. Take care all :)

I have 2 hard plastic tables that have adjustable legs. One is 6 ft long that I have in my quilting room and one 4 ft one that I have in my family room. They are really good because the height is adjustable and they fold up to almost nothing when you need to put them away.

mrodarme 09-22-2012 08:13 PM

i went to home depot...bought 2 bathroom vanity cabinets (because im short and the kitchen cabinets were taller)...bought a kitchen countertop to place on top...then for my sewing table, bought a matchine countertop, cut to the size i needed, had a hole drilled matching my 6600 janome & placed it on banquet table legs that fold if i need to disassemble...took some time to figure the dimensions but has been well worth it...i have cutting & sewing room now...hope it helps...monica in hot again texas

I bought a old Singer sewing machine stand at a garage sale(the old cast metal, that the self powered machines used). I don't think I paid over $25.00 (probably less) My husband has been in construction for 40 years and brought home a couple of broken pieces of marble. I had the largest one cut square so it's about 30"X 25". I've bought a sew steady table for my sewing machine, which sits on the marble top. i have a good office chair, so I can adjust the height that I need. Since this room occasionally gets used as a guest room I have a base that doesn't take much room, and looks good with out much price.

I have the one from Joann's. It looks like a desk; on the front one side opens up to give an extra space for 2nd machine or I put one of the small ironning pads on it or my laptop when I'm embroidering. Under that space are shelves and then there is a drawer and a cabinet with two shelves. The back side of the desk has a fold up top to allow for a large sewing area. I keep it up and have one machine on one side and the embroidery on the other side. I've had it for a couple of yrs so it's been great to have. If I didn't have a sewing room it would still work out great because it all folds down when you don't need it open.

I bought an SewEzi table years ago and I LOVE IT!!! I can set it up anywhere. I go to quilting retreats and set it up next to my table space.....so it gives me more room.

kwajgirl 09-23-2012 08:25 AM

I second connietoo's recommendation for the SewEzi table. It is wonderful when set up at home (and you can get an insert that fits every machine your own and just put the right one in for the machine you want to use). AND, it folds and rolls so you can take it to classes and retreats or hide it away when you must return your sewing room to guest room in my case.

If you get it at a big show where they vend you can usually get free shipping.

My first table a used door. Just added legs and risers worked great. It was wide and long served me for many years till I convinced and my hubby I had to have a longer table with drop ends in case I needed it to be longer. works great so he built it 40X72 with 3 ft drop leaf. and he put a shelf below for machines not in use
