Okay my fellow quilters, the teacher in me is coming out and I want to get to know all of you. SO...for every item that you have ever sewn or quilted tell at least one thing about yourself for each... I know some of you have so many that it would be impossible, so if that is the case at least tell us one thing about yourself. LOL. If you don't want to participate that is fine. :D

live2teach 04-12-2007 02:03 AM

quiltmaker101 04-12-2007 05:56 AM

Okay, here goes:

1. I have made over a dozen quilts, from baby quilts to California King.

I have sewed since I was 12. Got a sewing machine for Christmas that year. My mother, aunt and gramma all sew, but I am the first to make quilts. I also get to make quilts for one client, and she lets me make all the decisions for colors and pattern!

2. I made all my kids good clothes until they were about 4 years old. Also made their nursery decor.

I love sewing and making quilts because I can give or have something no one else has and my creativity has an outlet.

3. I made my first quilt at 37 years old. Gave it to my gramma, who passed away last year and now it is mine again.

I have two grown children, one is married. They are good friends, live here in Pensacola, and they love their mama.

4. I dream of being able to make quilts with curves, art quilts and someday having my own quilting machine so I don't have to pay someone to do the quilting.

I finally met the man of my dreams in 2004, which up until then was the most devastating year of my life) and now we are married. 3rd marriage for each of us, and living happily ever after!

Rebecca Chambley 04-12-2007 06:39 AM

Well I'm going to give you more information than I have quilts :D

I have only made 1 completed quilt and 2 quilt tops. I have another top cut out and should begin piecing it together this weekend if all goes well.

Let's see...about me.
I married my high school sweetheart and we've been together for 25 years (married 22).
I'm 41
I have 2 wonderful boys who are in college and work full time.
I have an almost 2 year old grandson.
I finally decided in February that I am all done working. Now I stay home and babysit my GS and decided that I should start quilting again and am having so much fun picking out fabric and patterns.

Ok that's about all I have for now. Nice to meet all of you 8)

Nina 04-12-2007 01:45 PM

Sewed a lot over the years..some successful and some I wouldn't even mention.

Married high school sweetheart at 17 and been married for 39 years (seems like yesterday). And yes, in spite of himself, he is still alive.

Two sons, one a Major in USAF, one a Respiratory Therapist -four grandkids (2 girls, 2 boys).

Love gardening, any kind of craft or needlework (except needlepoint). Hate cooked brocoli, asparagus and carrots.

Have been awarded the Master's Award in ceramics competition (highest can get - sorry for the brag, but it's very hard to achieve and I'm proud of it). My ceramics is a hobby that got way out of control, so I made it a side business to support my habit.

Love rock hunting and star gazing.

Counting down the days to retirement!

started quilting only 3 years ago all that I have made I have given as gifts.
single, plan on staying that way(take too much time away from my quilting)
have one son who is 25 and married going to graduate from the Uof A with a double major
Have 2 14yr old girls(twins) one is on the track team and in band and Jazz band and on the honor Roll
My other one is her sisters biggest fan
And of course they are My Space addicts.
I am a Fabric Addict and I love my embroidery machine.

loves_2_quilt 04-12-2007 03:54 PM

I have sewn WAY too many things to name something for each, but as for the quilts I don't think I can come up with something for each. I have sewn for my daughter almost since birth, she is 24 now, and western shirts for my son, he is 27 now.

I have been quilting since July 2005 and was hooked from the first cut of the fabric. I am married and have a son, daughter-in-law, and two grand daughters. I also have a daugther, son-in-law, and a grandson. My husband and I have been married for 29 years now.

I work full time as a food and nutrition supervisor at the local hospital and am active in our church. I try to quilt or sew some each day, even if it is only 10-15 minuets.

I love my family and really enjoy giving quilts as gifts.

One babyquilt:

And I inhaled!

Flying_V_Goddess 04-12-2007 04:36 PM

Everything I've ever sewn or quilted? Okay.

1. Blue with gold ruffle dress for Barbie.
--One of my best friends thought I was a boy for the first three weeks after meeting me. He realized I was a girl when I wore bright red lipstick one day.

2. Pants with the dragon from Dragon Ball Z painted in fabric paint on the right leg.
--I was almost born on Friday March 13th, 1987, but held out until the very next morning.

3. Camo boxers
--My dad wanted to name me Mercedes because my last name is Benz, but luckily Mom absolutely disagreed with the idea. My name ended up being Samantha after my parents watched Bewitched on Nick At Nite one evening. But, despite the fact I would have hated to be named Mercedes, the name I use when inputing my name for high scores on video games is "Merche".

4. Flying V guitar plushie
--My favorite band is Kittie. The first (and so far only) concert I ever went to was a Kittie concert on July 7, 2004 at the House of Blues in Chicago.

5. Black crushed velvet Chinese robe
--Love just about anything Japanese (food, art, culture, animes, games). My dream is to go to Japan and be entertained by a geisha (no, a geisha's not a prostitute as most people in the West seem to believe. They're actually practicioners of the traditional Japanese arts. "Geisha" literally means "artist")

6. Denim purse
--I am a Mountain Dew addict. In late 2005 the Pepsi Co. was giving away an XBox 360 every ten minutes for nine weeks and I was so desperate to get one that I drank Mountain Dew every day for 7 of those weeks trying to get codes to enter to try and win. Thus, I became addicted. Between all the Dews I drank and all the bottle caps other people gave me I acculmulated 160 codes and I never won. I did get an XBox 360 the following July after saving up all the money I got for graduation.

7. Black vinyl top with black ribbon laced up the front (through 12 D rings) and straps with silver buckles
--Made this project to wear to prom and people asked me where I bought it. It got done half an hour before my friends came to pick me up.

8. Black and white nine patch and solid red squares baby quilt
--I got interested in quilting last summer, but didn't start quilting until around last November. Now I can't resist the fabric section of Wal-Mart.

9. Blue top with V-shaped back (looks like crap)
--I went to GameStop for the midnight launch of the Nintendo Wii. I was blessed with the title of being the only girl gamer there.

10. Super Mario mushroom quilt (not finished yet)
--I've been playing video games for about 17 years. According to the list I've compiled, as of April 12, 2007 I've beaten at least 58 games in my lifetime. The last game I beat was Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess.

11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle quilt (not finished yet)
--I cracked my skull open on the edge of a coffee table while pretending to be a Power Ranger.

12. Sea map from the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (planning stages)
--My favorite restraunt is Garfield's because they have great food and they put paper (the kind you would get on a huge roll) on the table and give you crayons to draw with (being an artist, that's awesome!) The only Garfield's in Wisconsin is in Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire and usually I over indulge so I have to make my way over to the Dance Dance Revolution machine at the arcade afterwards to work off the bloatedness.

SandraJennings 04-12-2007 07:24 PM

Although I had quilted before, I credit my quilting start to my granny, who gave me quilt tops to finish for my children. Since then I have made several baby blankets for the little ones. I currently have 5 grandchildren, with two of my own yet to deliver. I have created quilts for each of my 4 children as well, encouraging them into the wonderful world of quilting and design. I love to applique and hand quilt. Have EQ5 currently and have spent several hours designing with the program. Born in Key West, I have been in all but 2 of the 50. Navy brat...Spent most summers in Miss. with my Grandparents on their farm. Learned to can, churn butter, and basically live off the land. Quite different from the California years when was a valley girl before I knew there were any. Used to work in radio, and I dealt blackjack, owned cake and candy business, refinished homes and reupholstered furniture. Published poetry and bartended, taught college courses....Life has not been boring. There is so much more....but I am still living it...and quilting as I go.

live2teach 04-12-2007 08:24 PM

WOW! I love reading everyone's responses and getting to know a little bit about each and everyone of you. It sounds like everyone has a full life...along with sewing and quilting.. :D I also love hearing about everyone's projects. What inspiration! I am finally working on my first wallhanging and I just went to JoAnns today and bought material for my first quilt...so HOPEFULLY, hahah I will have more to post soon. Okay everyone, there are MANY MANY more members...anyone else care to share with us?

Well, personally speaking (what other way can I speak?) I am an axe- murderer, just not a very good one.

I quilt because no one else is gonna make me one.

* I'm a primary school teacher (elememtary school). I currently job-share which means I work a week and am off a week.
(2) Navy trousers
* I have a six year old son, my miracle boy, born of IVF and had 5 further IVFs after him with no sucess.
(3) Countless pairs of curtains
* I'm the middle child in my family and have always suffered from "middle-child-syndrome"!!!!
(4) First lap quilt made with curtain leftovers
* I spent 7 wild months in a kibbutz in Israel when I was 21
(5) many many baby quilts
* Married for 10 years, some good, some bad. The IVF years were hard.
* I've travelled a lot (as Irish people do- it's a very small island). I love going to the US. My recent NYC trip was my 19th time to go to the US (i used to work for Delta Air Lines so got great travel concessions)
* Got a sewing machine for my 30th birthday and that was the start of it all. Saw a quilt in the window of a shop in Spain that cost 485 euros (about $550) and thought "I could do that!!" and that was the start of my addiction.
* Hope to adopt a child. It's a long process here, 5 years form start to finish, so hopefully 2009 will be the year we have our next child.

Connie Hadba 04-13-2007 10:39 AM

Where to begin?

2 pillow covers (my first projects - handsewn and handquilted)
I'm American born but transplanted to Lebanon 37 years ago. My husband of 38 years is Lebanese.

1 lapquilt
I've taught English (what else do you teach when all you speak is English?) in schools all over Beirut for the last 36 years. I give teacher training workshops here; work in administration; part-time librarian. (Life is full.)

4 baby quilts (all given away to relatives)
I have two wonderful boys both living and working in the US now. They grew up here speaking Arabic, English and French. I only speak English and enough Arabic to confuse anyone trying to figure out what I am trying to say. My mother-in-law, who only speaks Arabic, taught me to cook Lebanese dishes, so when I cook, I think in Arabic. (Go figure  )

1 queen sized quilt
My elder son, who has his doctorate degree in biochemical engineering and is head of research at his company, is getting married this summer. My husband, who has not been to the US in 35 years, and I will be attending the wedding. :) My younger son will be graduating this summer with a Master's degree in Psychology.

5 wall hangings -2 of those in progress
Love to read (it's the librarian in me); love to write (it's the English teacher in me); love to garden (it's the country girl in me); love to quilt ! (inherited from my grandmother).

1 twin sized top (finished but never quilted)
Learned to quilt here in Lebanon, where it is not traditional, from a marvelous 75-year young Lebanese woman who speaks nothing but French (a language I do not understand). We communicated by sign language and hands on. Thank goodness we both have a sense of humor. :)

I'm truly impressed, You love challenges.

Barb V 04-14-2007 04:39 PM

Hi Well here is a little bit about Barbara
I was born in Wisconsin, and moved to Maine when I was a freshmen in High School. Graduated with the class of '59 from Mount Merici Acadeny in Waterville, Me.
Moved to New Hampshire in 1965 where I met my husband. Was married in 1966 and 2 years later had our son. Moved back to Wisconsin in 1971 and 2 years later had a daughter. Both are married, and my daughter has 3 children 2 boys 9 and 7 and a girl who will be 5 tomorrow. I was always a stay at home Mom, so had plenty of time for crafts. I started sewing clothes when I was 16. I followed in my Mom's foot steps. I knit, crochet and started quilting in 1982. I took a couple of years off from quilting when I was doing tole painting. Now I have been back steady quilting for 5 years. I made 1 queen size sampler quilt which I use for a bed spread. I am working on my second queen quilt which is almost finished. I plan on making each of my grandchildren a quilt for when they get married. The second o ne is all cut out waiting to me batted. It is a YBR. Still have my eye open for the third pattern I want to make. I do all hand quilting. I bought a new machine 3 years ago so I could give it a try with machine quilting, but still never tried. I find it so relaxing sitting and hand stitching. I have made 20 or so wallhangings. Also made myself a jacket 2 years ago.
Guess that's my story, as is!!

Started sewing in the 60's--took home ec evry year from 7th grade on up.

All but one of my gazillion projects has been given away. Started with "cheater quilts" Took a class 20 + years ago when I moved to NC. I was born and raised in South La.

Married my high school sweatheart--It'll be 40 years this Dec and luckily for him, I haven't shot him yet, somedays its been a close call, but he is still alive and well.

Will retire to the mtns of NC in 2 more years. Currently fixing up our mtn home. Spent last week doing demo on the bathroom floor. Had to tear out everything and rebuild--rotted wood, ugh! But one day it'll be beautiful.

Have 3 kids all married one in Texas 2 in NC--3 grandkids--ages 10, 3 and 1--all my daughters.

Lastly love to quilt--hate housework and if you could see the house, you'd know that was no exaggeration

Love each and everyone one of you!

Hi, Somewhat of a new quilter, Have made: table runner, rag quilt (out of the Royal Crown Bags), rag jacket, Thomas the Train (my first quilt) baby quilt for new nephew and a quilted purse. I am working on a queen size quilt for our br. I love quilting. I wanted to learn for so many years and finally did. And doing the block of the month that this forum has, which this month is Applique which I have not done yet. FUN FUN FUN!!! :D

sarah333 04-16-2007 07:14 AM

Sis 04-16-2007 01:59 PM

My mom had me hand sewing @ 5 y.o. & using her Elna by 7y.o. with supervision,of course. I had 9 yrs of 4-H sewing & 4years of H.S. Home Ec. So I have made way too many projects over the years to remember but I'll mention the few I can.
1.Made my Sr. prom dress and finished it an hour before going to the event. (The procrastinator in me is ALWAYS at work, just not on time)
Married in 1978- husband is retired military now, 2 sons, both are college grads & active duty Army(23y.o. in aviation,24 y.o. being redeployed in Aug.) NO STRESS IN MY LIFE,HUH?

2.First quilting project was an appliqued baby quilt for my 1st nephew 27 years ago.
Have been an LPN for 30 yrs. & an elementary school nurse for the past 10 yr. with 725 children/year.

3.I love to "collect" fabric and look at my collection (ok, stash) and visualize pieces in many different projects without cutting one piece.
My mom-in-law rekindled my quilting interest a few yrs ago. Each of her 17 children, 47 grans and 20+ great-grans have been blessed w/ at least 1 of her hand-quilted quilts.(Too much for me to ever live up to.) She always has a quilt in the frame to be stitched on by whoever stops in to help.

4.I have made numerous pairs of curtains (kitchen, bedroom) and recently a camouflage purse for my son's girlfriend.
I have been blessed to find a group of ladies who share my love of quilting & community service- Prayer Squares/Quilts ministry which has helped my "empty nest "blues. They are great mentors!!!

I so enjoy the cameraderie expressed on this site. It's so "unique" (with Tim's quirky sense of humor) and input from others.

HAHA! You guys crack me up! I am glad I had this oppurtunity to learn many interesting things about each one of you! :D

Jane Sisk 07-20-2007 03:49 PM

What a great idea. I feel like everyone on here is a friend and I love to read all the postings. I live in Tucson, Arizona.

I am 65 years old and disabled with back injuries, can still walk, thank God. I started sewing as a teenager, making my own clothes, we were so poor, couldnt buy store bought. My granny lived with us and she quilted all the time. I have 3 of her quilts made in the 40's and 50s. I quit sewing when I started working after my husband and I seperated. I have 3 grown sons, 45, 43, 37 and three wonderful grandchildren, 2b, 1gr .

Last November I had to have a knee replaced, quite a long recovery, My dil decided I should start quilting, for some reason I had always be terrified of trying to quilt. They wouldn't take no for an answer and turned up at my house with beginning supplies. I jumped in with both feet and started in. My first effort was a split rail queen size and today it graces my bed. I was hooked, haven't stopped since. Made 3 king size quilts for each son, queen for granddaughter, twin for grandson, .oueen for 2 dear friends, a couch throw, a twin for my x husband who is in a home for mentally ill. I guess you can say I am hooked, moved to a larger apartment so I would have a second bedroom to quilt in. Most of my time is spent in there, happy as a clam. When I am not quilting I seem to be on the computer looking to see what everyone else is doing. I have posted several pictures if you want to look them up.

I have made too many things to count.

What you may not know about me...

I have the world's prettiest granddaughter. She is almost 3, and her name is Alanna. She was a bonus - we got her when my oldest son married her mommy a few months ago. I have only had boys, and we are all in love with this little angel! I love my DIL, too! :D

I homeschooled my sons, and the youngest graduated in May. Now both of my younger sons are going to the local community college and my DH is enrolled at Liberty University to finish his bachelor's degree online. I may have to get a "real job"!

Until we moved to town a year ago, we lived on a lovely farm with dairy goats, horses, chickens and assorted cats and dogs. I miss my gardens and privacy, but it's convenient to be in town.

I really like seeing where everyone is from. It would be nice if everyone would add their city & state (and country if not USA!!) under their avatar. It's easy to do:

Just click on "My Profile" at the top of any page.
Scroll down to "General Information About Yourself"
Type in your city & state/country in the box next to "From"
Scroll way to the bottom & click on "Submit"

Voila!! Now we can see where you're from.

gr8tchr4u 07-31-2007 12:06 PM

A teacher too? Wow, what are the chances of that happening? I thoght I was the only 'younger' teacher on here....

I've made layettes (for friends' kids, I don't have any)
Altered wedding gowns
Made bridesmaids dresses for two - no 3 different weddings
Made 3 quilts as an adult , working on a 4th (made countless baby doll quilts as a child).
Lots of dresses, clothes, etc.
Countless curtains, classroom items, throw pillows, etc.
Many formal gowns for family & friends
Countless alterations

I started sewing when I was 8 and began to 'see' patterns in my head. I badgered my mom about sewing and once I could reach the pedals, she taught me quickly the basics of how to run a machine, then passed me off to a friend of hers - an expert seamstress- who taught me all I know.

This past year I've opened a business featuring machine embroidery with a Jewish twist. Check out my new website www.anizochertjudaica.com

I try to sew a bit every week - it calms me like nothing else can!

After reading these I think I'll pass. My contribution would be short and uninteresting (boring). I will just say just this: single (no dating so always have been and will be) no children, 4' 11" (not saying which way) :l

What may be uninteresting to you may be amazing to someone else. Please don't consider your life uninteresting. What are your hobbies besides sewing and quilting? Where do you live? Do you have any pets? Believe me when I say, everyone on here would love to know their fellow quilters, otherwise there wouldn't be any posts. Life is what you make it! :D

Well, there's no way I can list everything I've made....my memory isn't that good anymore! I can say ...I've been sewing since I was old enuf to reach the peddle on my mothers machine!

I started with Barbie clothes (like some of you have mentioned)... I STILL have the first Barbie dress I made tucked in an old scrapbook I just don't have the heart to throw away....my kids get a charge out of looking thru it now and then!

I am 51 years old....been married 32 years this coming October...have two children....daughter 30 and son 28.....one granddaughter 7 (daughters)...

I sewed some of my own clothes and pajamas and stuff for my kids... continued with Barbie clothes too for my daughter and have even made some for my granddaughter.

I was heavy into crocheting for awhile, embroidery, cross stitch, etc.

My first quilt was quite the challenge....It was for my parents' 40th anniversary and each square was hand embroidered...some from a kit I bought and the rest were hand drawn with each of our names, birthdates and other info on them (they had 10 kids!) and the middle square was with their names/dates on it. My mother in law helped me with the backing and batting and tying procedure ....that was 27 years ago and I got hooked!

Since then I have made countless bed quilts, lap quilts, tablerunners and wallhangings.

I am never without pets...animal lover here! At one time had 8 dogs and 5 cats! I was our counties rescue shelter for awhile! LOL Anytime the local cop found a dog wandering he would call me....most of the time I found good homes for them and when that wasn't possible I kept them myself.

I'm happy to report they now have a humane society here! So I am down to two dogs and one inside cat and two outside cats.

My husband is semi-retired.....he has a part-time job at an auto parts store but for 30 some years he worked for 3M.

I haven't worked for over 3 years.....jobs are scarce in little towns! And right now I'm not that interested in going back to work.

I spend about 75% of my time sewing....

I like gardening, camping, enjoy our 240 acres of woods...(own 60 of it, the rest is family owned so we have access to it all) we have trails and a Kawasak mule we ride around in the woods....we burn wood so spend some time out with hubby cutting our winters supply each year.. We both enjoy that....

I am really getting into BOM's and swaps and enjoying it all.... I love it and this message board is great!!

Hope this isn't TMI :D

I can relate. At a young age I used to raid my mother's cleaning rag bin to make doll "clothes". Primitive as they were. At 9 I was in 4H and started my sewing journey with a machine. About 4 years ago a long time friend suggested I try quilting with her .... I now have oodles of fabric and tops with some f*****ed ones too. I have made 31 isolette quilts for the NICU. I was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years then we moved. 3 months after selling our house DMIL came to stay the winter with us .... fast forward 7 years  and an Alzheimer's diagnosis, what a learning experience and privilege to be her caregiver. She is now at peace and she loved to see all the pretty fabrics I was working on. She had quilters in her family and I am now caretaker of the quilts. :D I also enjoy cake decorating and tole painting. I am also a Director of my Historical Society where we are having a capital campaign and one of our building has just been nominated for the National Historic Register. Exciting for our small town ~ and a lot of work to get it this far.

I have made many crocheted items, bed spreads, purses, doll clothes, scarves, etc...
I raised 3 kids by myself since they were 2,3 and 4.
They are now 22, 23, and 24
I have 5 grandchildren ages 1,2,3, and 4 yr old twins
I have done a lot of craft sewing, but am now just getting ready to start my first large quilt. I found a pattern my son wants, thought I was going to have to wing it but found the pattern in a book off of an older message board here, Thank You!
I have worked until 2 years ago, mostly production plant work, but almost always had 2nd part time jobs doing all kinds of different things until I got into taxes and accounting. That became my 2nd seasonal part time job.
I loved to hand embroider, had to give that and crocheting up due to arthritis, so I just got a embroidery machine and am looking forward to being creative with it
I spend a lot of time with my grandsons, mine is their home away from home
I love to go to Louisville to visit my son
I guess I should remember that the little mini fridge sized quilts count as quilting.......
I am looking into quilting classes and look forward to taking them this winter
I found out sewing pants for the first time that you can put them together wrong and they still piece together nicely. Could not figure out why they stayed puckered when I turned them right side out, LOL
I feel very blessed to have come across such a great group of people here!

I live in a very small town in Pa. I have been married 51yrs to the same man, God Bless Him. We have four grown married children, ten grandchildren, and two great grands. I am a retired nurse and then a quilt shop owner, retired from that. I have made too many quilts to mention but am hooked on paper piecing after taking a class from Carol Doak. I made wallhangings, babyquilts, placemats, only one king size quilt that was enough. Have sold many of my projects. I have three Janome machines, two are embroidery so I am really addicted with a passion to quilting. We also like to travel and have been to many places mostly on the East Coast. This is probably more information than you want to know. Marge
