I wanted to scream and laugh at the same time!!

I have been working on finishing a log cabin quilt that I bought half finished from a friend of my mother's. the outer border was prety wide. so, I thought I'd just trim it up and use the trimmings for the binding. I ironed it and laid it on the arm of the couch beside the quilt and left to go to church Sunday morning. when I got home, my binding was gone. I have to explain that my DH and I are caregivers for his mother, who is best fast. And, he was home with her alone!! And, I also have to explain that my DH is a quilter of sorts who only uses 2&1/2 inch blocks in his quilts. Well, you guessed it. My DH had "found" my binding and cut it into 2 & 1/2 inch blocks!! What do you think about that? I wanted to scream!!! then I had to laugh!!

Dina 01-24-2012 05:39 AM

I think screaming and laughing are both appropriate... Who'd have thought you would have to hide your binding. Oh well, there are other bindings, but just one DH. :)

Nolee 01-24-2012 06:06 AM

Maybe you shouldn't go to church, LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Just kidding!!!

QuiltnNan 01-24-2012 06:40 AM

who'd have guessed that you have to 'guard' your wip's :)

susie-susie-susie 01-24-2012 06:46 AM

How lucky can you be? A DH who quilts and watches his mom. Sounds like he is the total package. Next time hide things.

valleyquiltermo 01-24-2012 06:47 AM

Well it was just laying there calling my name it was a perfect strip for my needs. LOL

EmbQuilt 01-24-2012 07:02 AM

Lol too funny and frustrating I can imagine.

Val in IN 01-24-2012 07:07 AM

Well, it at least it got used and not tossed! I think a lot of us have "purloined" plenty of things from the toolboxes and workbenches for our needs so I guess it's karma...What goes around, comes around. Your DH is a keeper!

Sandra in Minnesota 01-24-2012 01:47 PM

That is too funny!

Annaquilts 01-24-2012 01:49 PM

Yes, scream and laugh. It is frustrating but hilarious at the same time. So does this give you the rights to dig through his stash to shop ?

Pinkiris 01-24-2012 02:38 PM

What do you mean, his mother is "best fast"?? I don't understand............

barny 01-24-2012 03:49 PM

I think she meant bedfast.

Tink's Mom 01-24-2012 04:09 PM

Well...you could put it back together...with lots and lots of seams...lol
Don't you just love them?

I guess I just got in too big of a hurry and didn't realize my typos. I did mean bedfast. Sorry. Must have been before the first cup of coffee. hehehe!!

Yooper32 01-25-2012 04:03 AM

Have you considered buying a small safe?

Didn't think about that!! But, thanks for the suggestion. I think he may have learned his lesson but only time will tell. :o

emsgranny 01-25-2012 04:37 AM

I totally agree!!! I wouldnt know rather to laugh or cry myself lol You and DH may need to set boundaries - ask before you use fabrics lol

That is so funny - I think i would have just laughed. My DH has a real problem with math - 1/2 inch , 1/4 inch etc. I keep telling him to take up quilting and it would help him. but he just refuses!I would love to see some of your DH quilts. I admire anyone who can make anything with smaller than 4 inch pieces of fabric!

KimS 01-25-2012 06:24 AM

Thanks for the laugh this morning. My hubby wouldn't even know which side of the sewing machine to feed the fabric through. LOL!!!

glorcour 01-25-2012 06:47 AM

Too funny. However it is so nice that you and your spouse share this interest. Lucky you!!!

Candela59 01-25-2012 08:17 AM

Ha! Your story made me laugh out loud..and I'm home all alone! He sounds like a keeper to me!

butterflies5518 01-25-2012 09:19 AM

Gotta love him!

Peckish 01-25-2012 09:24 AM

Too funny!

What is "bedfast"? I am unfamiliar with that term. Is it the same as bedridden?

MargeD 01-25-2012 10:14 AM

My DH is not a quilter, but he and my 2 children all feel that what Mom has, anyone has access to and therefore they can do whatever with it. Too bad about that binding, but he really should have asked first. Best that you were able to laugh about it.

SuzyQ 01-25-2012 10:18 AM

Well, at least he didn't decide he just had to have one of the logs in the middle of your logcabin ... kinda like the Fons & Porter "George" commercial LOL!

Who ever said God doesn't have a sense of humor! I broke my ankle at church one year while setting up for the Bishop's reception.

I'm a little green with envy that your DH shares your passion for fabric. Mine just thinks I'm nuts! LOL

Hmmm - yep - currently I have pliers and a chisel in my sewing room (the pliers because the feed dogs knob is frozen on my 830 - so I can lower them by hand, but need the pliers to turn it to raise them again... need to take the machine in for service (I bought it used last fall and haven't had a chance to get it fixed yet)) and the chisel to pound nails into the wall as all 4 of our hammers are AWOL.

At least the missing strip will be loved and used.

Cheers, K

cleodaisy 01-25-2012 11:05 AM

How nice that your DH quilts too. Don't leave binding strips around unless they are ironed in half!!! My DH doesn't know one end of a needle from another. He does have a pretty good eye when I ask him to look at what I am making.

BarbaraSue 01-25-2012 11:07 AM

lol. And here I was waiting to read that your cat ran off with the binding strip!!

Well, this way you will find a better solution for your binding.

quilt addict 01-25-2012 11:35 AM

That was not the way my mind was taking me when I was reading. I was expecting some small child or one of the 4 legged kind to have contributed to the disappearance. Gotta love the DH though. Both reactions are appropriate.

khurtdvm 01-25-2012 12:41 PM

That's both hilarious and frustrating. Glad you finished by laughing!

glenda5253 01-25-2012 01:33 PM

Oh I can feel your frustration and humor!!! Great story.

quiltmore 01-25-2012 02:11 PM

I love it! I will trade yours for mine! Just kidding LOL My husband to this day doesn't understand cutting up fabric into little pieces then sewing it back together again. But he does have a quilt I made for him, that won an award at a museum show in Little Rock that is of him and my grandson playing football in the backyard that he wouldn't take anything for. That one he understood. Go figure. I guess they can't figure us out and we can't them. I would gladly share my fabric if he quilted that seems like it would be a dream to have a husband that quilted. :D

pasolovers 01-25-2012 02:38 PM

Very Funny.....nothing is sacred!!!!!

vondae 01-25-2012 03:22 PM

You know what they say- Got to Love them!!!!!!!! A good story to share with the grandkids. Smile through the tears. HAHA!!

booklady 01-25-2012 04:44 PM

Who would have thought you would have to hide it from your DH????????

Yes, it is. A more regionally used term, as is bedbound. If you think about the literal meaning of all the words, they don't seem to make sense, do they! The charm and difficulty of language is unending.

bubble951 01-26-2012 03:47 AM

Can't live with them, can't live without them. What can you do?

Quiltbeagle 01-26-2012 04:17 AM

LOL, I'd scream and laugh too, just not sure in which order. He sounds too wonderful to get mad at though... takes care of his mother AND quilts? He's a keeper for sure.
