I saw this topic listed

and thought I would share what I got there today. I have some beautiful fall fabrics, but the colors can be a challenge, especially when you want sashings or borders that will blend well.

So.....on one of the flat fold isles I came across these solid leaf prints that were awesome, and at $2.49/yd, how can one resist. So I just grabbed 3 flat folds in the colors that matched my fabrics and purchased all on each fold - a little over 15 yards. I'm pretty excited!

Here's the fabrics I had to work with

Here's the 3 colors I found that match beautifully

Where is it located? It may be worth a trip next time I visit DS#3 and family in CA, he lives sort of near LA.

Oh love those 3 matching fabrics! I might have to call a halt to my 'no buy' policy and make a trip to M&L after all... I wouldn't make the 1 hr trip by myself but dh goes to Anaheim a couple times a month and I could hitch a ride with him.

They had every fall color under the rainbow of that fabric, light and dark, blues, plums, browns, greens, really good selection.

Lalaland, are you trying to tempt me even more? I'm really gonna have to see when dh is headed that way again.

Thanks so much!

Love your choices of fabrics. I really have fun at M &L fabrics. It's only about 30min from me so it can be rather dangerous for my pocket book.

bodie358 10-20-2011 10:11 PM

I love that store. I can literally spend hours just looking.

sewbeadit 10-20-2011 11:54 PM

Awesome!

If you have never been, you are in for a treat. They have thousands of yards of fabrics. They have deeply discounted fabrics AND the normal high-priced but high-quality quilt shop lines. Be prepared to spend a lot of time looking!

quilts4charity 10-21-2011 05:28 AM

Great fabrics, gorgeous!!!!

maryb119 10-21-2011 05:29 AM

Beautiful fabrics!! I wish I lived closer so I could go there too.

I saw on the Yelp reviews of this store that the old Russian ladies in the baboushkas are still very much in control and not in the least customer service oriented. They also said that the front of the store had the most expensive newer fabrics and price and quality declined as you go further to the back. Is this still true? It won't keep me from shopping there, however.

The experience I have had is not so much a lack of customer service, but they simply can't answer your question a lot of the time, you have really got to "know" the store yourself and it's not layed out randomly, they pretty much have stuff organized according to fabric type. The flat folds are a crap shoot, but the piles are kept at a certain height because of fire department requirements, and the newer stuff is on the top. Even in flat fold, they try to group the seasonal fabrics, one color, ginghams and panels together.

They sell the high end fabric for about $2 less a yard than the quilt stores and they are very generous on their cutting.

In the old days the men were in charge and they were awful. They would yell at the ladies shopping and get mad if you tried to move the flat folds around to get to a piece you wanted. If they helped you move the fabric, they would get mad if you didn't take the piece they had uncovered for you. I steered clear of them as much as I could.

I think the store is owned by the same people who own Jenny's Fabrics in Fountain Valley.

According to Yelp Jennys is the same organization as M&L. From the reviews Jennys seems to have more of the bridal and costume fabrics, is smaller and more disorganized but preferred to the garment district in LA if time is the issue.

yeah, I seem to remember the word through the grapevine was M&L was bought out by Jennys (it's been several years ago now) but they still continue to employ family members of the original owners, and the men that do work there no longer interact with customers.

I was wondering what the prices were on flat fold. I remember when they were $1.49 a yard. The nearest major landmark it is near is near is Knot's Berry Farm. It is near the corner of Knott & Ball. It is a store that has a mixture of fabric. You can buy fabric from a bolt at normal quilt shop prices or dig thru the flat folds and let me tell you, there are lots of aisles FULL of flat fold stack 7 feet HIGH. It is a lot of fun if you like to dig. Hoping I can catch a ride someday since with my disability, I longer am able to drive......

I paid $2.49 for my fabric yesterday. I think the VIP is $2.98 a yard.

Jim's Gem 10-21-2011 04:29 PM

sure was brave of you to look thru the flat fold piles!!!!!
It's been at least 18 mos since I was last there but I decided that tackling those flat fold piles was not worth the pain in the shoulders!!! Such a mess

I do love to cruise the aisles, especially where they have the better prices!!!

I have never had a problem with anyone there. There are just not many people working so you do have to find things on your own pretty much.

Deborahlees 10-21-2011 04:37 PM

my goodness I wish I could have gone with you.....I live in Temecula...we could have met there....but I am poor until my social security check comes next wednesday.....

Cosy 10-21-2011 05:12 PM

Nice!

trif 10-21-2011 09:52 PM

I have only had good experiences with the ladies working there, and if I ask for a specific fabric that I thought I saw they know what area of the store it is in to help locate it.

I always go with my quilter/friend so we can Laugh at each other ....cough cough....I mean help each other with the flat fold area. We always have a great time.
