I am looking for ideas for placemats, tablerunners to use my Farmer John fruit/veggie fabrics... Does anyone have photos of any small projects they have done with these fabrics? I love these fabrics. I don't want a big quilt though. I want small projects. I like the octagon shaped placemats. I have a couple of patterns but I need to see Photos... Thanks
MA

Anxious to see replies. I have fruit and vegs fabrics and could use some ideas also. Thanks for asking.

I would also love to see pictures of quilts and other projects from the fruit/veggie line. I have been collecting it for a year and now need to make something with it.

I like the fruit/veggie pattern done in the canning jar pattern. It is the same pattern as the bug jars for the large jars and a tumbler pattern with lids for the jelly jars. I think a line of those would look great as a table runner and placemats. Sorry, no pictures.

Sandra-P 08-19-2011 06:29 AM

I will be watching this too.

Is there a link for the tumbler pattern with lids? Sounds as if this could be made into potholders? Actually potholders was what I want to do with fabric but need ideas of how to incorporate them into a pattern. Thanks for your help.

I got my patterns from the CQA/ACC Summer 1999 article "Your Summer Canning Done The Quilting Way!" by Judy Villett. Someone will probably chime in with a pattern from the net, I'm sure it's out there somewhere. I will describe the block as best as I can....It is the tumbler block with the narrow part to the bottom, with a 1 inch wide gray lid to match the top of the wide part of the tumbler top. You can also do a small canning jar which is basically a square that you sew a approx. 1&1/4 inch square on each corner and flip out and trim. Measure the top of the square with the corners of background fabric on to determine the width of your 1 inch lid. Sew 2 pieces on either side of the lid to match the side of your jar and your done unless you want to add more background. Hope this helps.

I love the quilts that are jars, sometimes they are on a shelf other times they just float.
I did a quilt with all fruit and veggie fabric by local designer Larisa Key here in CT.

It's called Fat Quarter Frolic.
It uses different sized prints. The larger prints stay large and the smaller ones get cut up.
Imagine a Turning Twenty mixed with a Yellow Brick Road.
The use of the large scale prints kept large makes the impact.
I'll see if I can find the pict of the one I made.

I have a pattern in a book called 5-10-15 + Fat Quarters that I want to use. Have the fabric..now need the time. It is a 51 1'2" x 63 1/2". I am going to use it as a wall hanging in my kitchen. I have cathedral ceiling in there so it is a big blank wall.

Here is a free pattern for the bug jar quilt you could make them narrower and taller of even smaller.

I used belmers tut to make microwave fabric bowls using fruit and veggie fabric. Easy, quick and turned out great. And they work like a charm.
I can't post a pic. Batteries in my camera are goners.

I think an appliqued quilt with baskets and the fruits and veggies over flowing from them would be cute :D:D:D

MadQuilter 08-19-2011 09:19 AM

I am planning to make one with canning jars - but only for those items that can be canned. Thanks amma, I now know what to do with the items that can't be canned.

Placemats .... make a large 'dinner plate' place mat. A white plate with perhaps a blue rim around it, then fussy cut splotches of different foods cut into blobs like they would sit on a dinner plate.

Dieters plates :)

Lockeb (Bill) has a pattern for canning jar placemats super easy, I bought pattern from him when he first posted them for sale, they turned out AWESOME. PM him or search here for his patterns.

I don't have a picture to send but I made a mini bow tucks purse for a girlfriend using fruit fabric and fruit ladies fabric and plan to make myself one this week. Also made 4 matching totes with different fruit fabric and the same fruit ladies fabric for myself and 3 girlfriends. We meet every year in South Dakota for a long weekend and have been friends since high school - so we all bring gifts.

Here is the Twister one that I made for my Granddaughter Stella. When DD found out she was expecting Stella was the size of a blueberry then grew to a lemon, eggplant...up to a watermelon.

where was this kind of fabric when i wanted to make casserole carriers. Pattern is a square 27 or 29 in depends on your dish. One strap goes corner to corner after the piece is quilted. Loops or metal circles on opposite corners to put the strap thru. Very easy.
Have no camera ready and no printed pattern but great in food fabric.
