What a great idea for fidgety hands. I guess you would sew the marble into the maze so you wouldn't have a choking hazard for the younger children?

Ive made one for each of my great-grandchildren on their first birthday. They are very detailed and much appreciated I think. The tradition started with my own daughter making her first child one. She made hers using felt for the various shapes. I use fabric and heavy white denim for the pages. The name of the book is "I Can"

The family in front of me in church had one of these for their daughter. It was called the Book of Mormon and the pages had simple finger puppets of the people out of the book. They had velcro and the pages were felt. Many pages also had zipper pockets. it was absolutely adorable and it kept the 2 or 3 year old occupied for the entire hour and 15 minutes. Not an easy thing to do.

Thanks to all for your great suggestions! Alot of good ideas for me to think about and try!

These are great ideas. Love the idea of the marble sewn in, but the pages pictures were great. Reminded me of a book version of Dapper Dan. Remember him? :)

Yes, I admit to a rather warped sense of humor. I can picture the church cloak room, a row of pegs, and a line of open tote bags filled with wiggly toddlers. Their mischievous faces peeking out! Here's a link with some that I think you really had in mind! http://teachingmama.org/busy-bags-101/ |
This turned out to be a mixed up thread. Started out asking for soft books to take to church, but side tracked to fidget blankets, marble mazes and busy bags.
I think any book taken to church should have a church theme. My children never took anything to church. I sat in the front row with all of them, and they paid attention to what was going on up there. |
depending on the age of the children, the books should have things to do. A page with snaps, buttons and zippers. A foldout page that has a road on it and a pocket with a couple felt cars. A forest print with a couple fairies or an ocean fabric with a pocket that has a felt pirate ship and treasure box - you get the idea. Keep their little hands busy and they tend to be quieter.
