If you could only have one......
which quilting magazine would you subscribe to? I am finding more and more repeat patterns in all of the quilting magazines that I subscribe to. I am tired of looking at the same old things. I like fresh ideas or a nice spin on the old favorites. I'm just curious how others feel.
I like the easy quilts magazine that JA's sells. they have some cute things to make in a hurry and some nice larger quilts too. I see a lot of repeats too, very disappointing.
None, the internet is full of free patterns.I do not subscribe to any mags anymore.just my opinion
I have given up on quilting mags. I do check them out at the mews stand and will buy if I find something I really want. Its a lot cheaper than a subscription, when I only buy 2 or three a year and they are seldom the same brand.
I really like American Patchwork Quilting. I have had a subscription for about 4 years now. I don't do a lot of shopping, so its a nice thing I do for me.
I get too many. I guess I'm adicted. Anyway, one time I like one and the next time it's another. I guess I would say that I like all of them. Fons and Porter are high on my list at the present time.
Oh, it'd be tough. I have subscribed to dozens of them but there are three I stick with - Quilter's Newsletter, Quilting Arts, and Machine Quilting Unlimited.
I think if I absolutely HAD to pick just one I think I'd go for Quilting Arts. It's not about patchwork quilting, it's about art quilts, which I don't even really make. But I find it to be really inspiring and beautiful to look at, it's a magazine I can re-read a year later and find something to get excited about. Every issue feels very "rich". I like their sister publication, "Cloth Paper Scissors" too. I don't subscribe to that one anymore but it's just as good, just oriented more towards paper crafts. |
As others have said, I have discontinued all quilting magazines since there are so many free patterns on the web. When I first started quilting, I probably subscribed to 6-7. Over time, I've let them all "die"!
For me it is Modern Quilts Unlimited, but they only publish once a quarter. I also get American Patchwork and MSQ Block, but Modern Quilts has more that interests me.
I subscribe to Block magazine and Quiltmaker, which was a gift subscription. I go to Barnes and Nobles every six weeks to check out all the new issues and usually buy one that has a pattern I like.
I get Love of Quilting by Fons & Porter and I really like it, but I get most of the patterns I make up free from the internet. I get newsletters from my favorite shops online & get more free patterns right to my e-mail daily! Some are good, some not so much, but I can pick & choose which ones I save.
I've given up on craft magazine subscriptions. It's very seldom that I'll like more than one or two patterns in an issue, and I no longer have the room to keep a bunch of magazines, just in case. I may buy a magazine here and there, IF there's something I want in it. Overall, I prefer buying books or getting my patterns from the internet.
The last one I subscribed to was Quiltmaker. Half of the mag was advertisements on the right side of the pages. Do not subscribe anymore to anything! I go to the library or the store to check them out.
I always liked Fons & Porter but have so many that I quit subscribing to it. I did get several others for a while but let them expire. Not I only get Block from MSQCo. There are so many free patterns online now.
No subscriptions here either. I do buy Primitive Quilts...they come out seasonally. I also buy anything that catches my eye.... but my "rule" is that there has to be at least 3 projects featured that I want to do before I think it's worth it to buy.
I was gifted a stack of old quilting magazines. I found some of them very inspiring, others not so much. Since I rarely follow a pattern completely anyway, I've never actually purchased a quilting magazine and have only purchased one actual quilt pattern (from a board member btw). I get my inspiration from this wonderful board!
I don't buy magazines any more. There is too much free on the internet. Also, go see what magazines your local library subscribes to. You can check out all but the most current issue.
I don't subscribe to any myself. I check the internet and the newsstands or book sections in the stores where I shop. if I find a pattern I like I purchase that mag. otherwise I just keep shopping as usual. I live too far away from most fabric shops, so I had rather shop for fabric or other supplies that I really need.
I am letting my subscription to Quilt World expire. They allowed me access to 10 years of old issues. Now with all those issues on my computer, I really don't need any more. Quick Quilts was a gift which I enjoyed but they are just too expensive.
I don't use quilt magazines that you must purchase. I go to my library. They have a HUGE stash of quilt books with more patterns that I'd do in two lifetimes.

I don't subscribe any more cause there seem to be zillions of free patterns online. The only magazine I ever found to have gorgeous original things you don't see everywhere was "Australian Patchwork and Quilting" which was pretty expensive in the U.S., but I still refer to my years-old ones for ideas. I have no idea if it is even still published.
I still love to curl up and look at magazines. The only quilting mags I subscribe to are BLOCK and American Patchwork. I'm always looking forward to the next one!
I have never made a quilt from a magazine. But I do have a big stash of them and am running out of room to store them. Im down to two subscriptions - Block and Fons and Porters. I do enjoy getting them in the mail.
I currently subscribe to Quilting Arts (and have since 2002), American Quilter (the American Quilter's Society magazine that comes with membership), American Patchwork and Quilting (which I will not renew), and Quilters Newsletter (which I'm about to cancel after only 2 issues because they now add 30-page catalogs of non-quilting related merchandise stapled in the center :hunf: ).
If I could only have one, it would be Quilting Arts, hands down, as art quilts are my primary interest. I don't have any interest in making someone else's pattern, but I am definitely a technique junkie. Second choice would be American Quilter. |
I get BLOCK (I'm a Misourian, so I like supporting a Missouri small business). Other than that, I find most of what I want online.
I stopped subscribing to magazines about 5 years ago. I get newsletters from all kinds of fabric vendors and get pictures and patterns (some of which are free); I joined Craftsy, not only for the classes, but for the patterns; and I get several different types of blog updates. Since I not only quilt, but sew, crochet and craft, I enjoy getting email from a lot of different sources.
With all the free patterns online, I quit taking all quilting magazines. Now I have to figure out what to do with twelve years of magazines....I quit when I realized they were just changing a couple colors and showing the same thing all the time.
My absolute favorite is Quiltmaker.
I have three subscriptions now and I think I like the Fons and Porter magazine the best. The other two I have is Block and Quilt Makers.
I used to take most of them but have stopped all but Fan's and Porter love of quilting. Quilt World. Quilters News Letter, McCalls Quilting and Quick Quilts. There was not much to interest me in any of my latest ones so if they don't get better I am going to drop them all.

Block and Quilt World are my two favorites, and easy quilt too.
I like getting the magazine online, then I can print any pattern I really want and don't have to deal with all the repeats.
I totally agree. I have spent enough money on mags, when you can get FREE ones all over.
I loved Quilt Life, but they quit publishing.

I don't subscribe to any magizines right know but have thought about it in the past but really didn't know what magazine to get. I think one after noon I may have to go look at some and see what I want to get.
I was getting 3 different magazines a few years ago and found I never found time to go through them all. Some issues just didn't appeal to me. Now I browse through them when I see them or if I see a pattern online (mostly here! :-) ). I'll buy one if what's inside is something want and can't find it anywhere else and usually buy the digital copy if available.
All of the Australian quilt & project magazines are wonderful. If I COULD, that's what I'd buy for myself. However, the subscriptions are so expensive that they are out of the question - like $90 a year. I don't even buy individual ones anymore - but love looking through them at Barnes & Noble.
Quiltmaker and Quiltmaker for Kids are always fun to look through. |
