If you don't intend to buy more fabric but you must...

How much do you buy when you have no idea what to do with it?

Scenario:
Walks into fabric store with a swatch of fabric to buy two contrasting fabrics. Gets lucky and finds 3. Ready to buy. Casually scans fabrics while walking to counter and spots a new fabric line. Goose bumps appear. Feet suddenly glue themselves to the floor. Thoughts wrestle between "just keep going...just keep going" and "...!" Critic pipes in: But for what? Why? You haven't even been sewing that much lately. Get a grip girl. Just go.

She strengthens her resolve and gets halfway to counter. But the fabric is calling her. Haunting her. So she goes back and finds herself touching it, taking out her favorite bolt, then the next one, the next one...

So ... how much of each should she buy?

(just in case, you know, this happens again...)

I've come up short before, so, I buy 4 yards usually if I don't have a specific plan. At a minimum, 2 yards.

Well that is a dilemma. I guess it would depend on the type of quilts you make. I could do a lot with a yard if making baby or lap quilts. Now my quilts tend to be on the larger lap size and I find that 2 - 2 1/2 are needed for borders. But, if I am trying to resist, I will buy 1 - 2 yards. Ah, quilting can be stressful when in a store

1 yard of each and 3 for borders because I prefer LOF for my borders; life’s too short buy the fabric!

I am afraid I would end up with 4 yards of each if I was really in love.

2 yards minimum, if I really love it and the store is a long drive away I'd get 3 or 4.

2 yds minimum. Depends on how much I love it.

Depends on how much money I have available.

At the moment, it is earmarked for other things.

I am trying to use my stash but if I just got to have it? 2 yds. Is usually enough to satisfy my craving and still have enough when paired with other fabrics for a quilt top.

I can sure see myself in this scenario. I would buy 2 yards plus 3 for a border. Although lately I’ve found myself buying FQ plus 2 yards of a couple and 3 yards for border.
