OK, you walk into this huge QS, I mean beautiful fabs everywhere! Batiks to take your breath, Calicos to take you back to days of yester year. Sparkling jewel tones to feast upon, just everything more beautiful and wonderous than you've ever laid eyes on:shock: ...AND you came in there for an important piece of fabric you neeeeeded! What would you do? Go ahead and get what you need :cry:or throw caution to the wind and shop, look, explore and get a few beauties to take home for yourself!! :XD:
I know what I would do!! What would you do, how would you spend your $30.00!?? |
Random surprises are the best. "Ooh, lookee over there..."
I would only get what I needed because if I didn't then I would regret it. $30.00 bucks isn't easy to come by in my house hold.
I would pat all the fabric but get what I needed first.
I have learned I only get what I need. I went in with a particular fabric in mind, if I find it that day, fine, if not, save money for another day when I will find it.
In todays economy, I cannot afford to be willy-nilly with my money. Besides, why have more fabric sitting around that I will probably never get around to using? Fondle, ooo and ahh over the fabric, and leave it be. Not worth the hassle. |
If I went in specifically for something I would have to get that....but I might have to make a fast trip back for other goodies.
I would get the piece I needed and hope it would be under the limit so I could spend the rest on surprises!! :D:D:D
hmmm, i would walk around and around and around and get very dizzy at what to pick up first. Love notions and anything new. :)
My $30.00 and so much more would go to buy fabric and thread.
I'd get what I needed and thats it. But, would make mental notes of things I'd like to get later.
Do I have $30.00 in one hand and a 40% off coupon in the other one? Then I could get twice as much lovely fabric.
(I'm not mentioning the fact that I'm bad at math, not when I have FABRIC to buy) |

I would be so distracted at all of the pretties and the ideas just whirling - confusion would set it and I wouldn't buy a thing! Sometimes I just can't make a decision!
I would likely got with what I came for.
Good Answers Ladies! You're much stronger than I!
I would walk in, turn right around and head to Joann's with my 40% coupon and get twice as much. And still have money left for a Happy Meal....LOL
I would only get what I came for and window shop the rest :D
Chances are if I only have $30 to spend I'm not going to be in a quilt store to start with. When I am in a quilt store I always have at least $50 to spend. We're not rich but I do budget for my quilting and I can save it up for a couple of months and then go to a LQS. There are times I'll save my quilt budget for several months at a time and then go spend it all at once.
If they had what I was there for initially, I'd get that and then see how many other goodies I could get with the rest...which is how I normally shop anyway!
it'll be gone in five min.. I have no will power...
I'd be too overwhelmed so I'd go to Mexican restaurant get lunch and a big Margarita LOL.
I do that every day anyway, only without the thirty bucks and with 20% off. :-D I bought fabric today for a new baby quilt...we just got some BEAUTIFUL batiks in, and I snatched some of that up. Found this wonderfully adorable print with little hearts on a tan background, but the colors just didn't work. Will have to figure out something else to do with it. Those of us that work there have the advantage of each having a space where we can cut off fabric for ourselves and ferret it away until payday, so we know it will be there when we can finally buy it. And every one of us (barring the couple in the store that don't sew or just really can't afford it) catches the 'gotta have it' bug at least once every other week. It's a wonderful thing. I told my husband that the moment we can comfortable afford all the bills and groceries, etc. on just his paycheck, I'm going in there with one of mine and splurging. :-D

If I'm shopping for something specific and i can't finish that project without it, and i have only a specific amount of money to spare, then i shop for that something specific and drag myself past everything else.
mind you, it's traumatic and i usually need three days to recuperate, but a quilter's gotta do what a quilter's gotta do. |
I would get only what I needed. I have a good stash now, so the will power is there to say NO! LOL

Well, since I only need a FQ, I'd look around and blow the whole wad and probably more! Quilting is my therapy and shopping for quilt-related stuff is part of that therapy, so I wouldn't want to mess with my therapy, would I?
I did something like that last night! Needed binding & appliques. I went in, the fabrics were crying out my name, but I went to the other side, got what I needed...then..what's that I see? Fat qtrs...Christmas fat gtrs!! I limited myself to two so I could sneak them past my DH & ran for the door! Cost me $14.00 at the checkout, but this morning I patted my new acquisitions & hid them amongst all the others I have. All is right with the world! LOL! :-)
Do I only have $30 period, or just $30 to spend in the QS?
If its $30 period, I get what i came for. If that is just my budget for the store, I get what I need and maybe a little extra pretty if I have $$ left over. |

Now if I could just save it long enough to get that new sewing machine with all the fancy do-hickeys.... |
I would also get what I needed and Pray I had a tiny bit LO to buy a new FQ of something!

I like to go around and pick up lots of bolts and than at the end I ask myself if I really love and adore them. Usually it is easy to put most of them back- there are so many fabrics out there that it is good to be picky.
I am working on a scrappy quilt (and will be for some years at this rate) and am always looking out for fabric for it, but when I see one I love I only buy the minimum cut, so it is not much outlay. Can't resist the bargain bin though! Got a lovely little bag of 1.5 inch strips which my LQS had made up as a rag rug kit. Obviously no one is rag rugging and they had loads reduced from $25 to $5 and I enjoyed playing with some fabrics I would never have bought otherwise. Used it for Christmas cards incl the one in my avatar. I resent paying loads for dingy Christmas cards so this was a real win win getting the lovely fabric and being able to make unique ones myself very cheaply. Didn't buy any other fabric the day I got that (got some fabulous Egyptian cotton thread in variegated colours, but that's another story) |

I would get what I need but I would also look around and see what else there was to look at. Batiks are my weakness!
The rule I usually follow (and this has a lot to do with the fact that I pay so little for my fabric anyway) is that if I like it, I get one yard. If I love it, I get three, and if I can't live without it, I get five. I don't come across the last very much, but I've got quite a few one and three yard cuts laying about!
Matter of fact...I just thought of one I got last week that would make a perfect border on the quilt I'm working on! lol
Alright, MommaK- what would YOU do with it????? :D:D:D
A new book always snares me.
Only $30 to spend?!?!? What torture! I am lucky if I get out of any LQS without dropping at least $100. Thankfully I only go into a QS (in person or on line) once every 3 months or so. So I guess that is just a tad over $30 per month so not so bad. I would get what I need and hope I had some left over to blow on some of those batiks!
It's funny you should ask this. I told my SIL that I waned a GC to Joanns for Christmas. So, I'll be in this exact position a couple of weeks from now.
I've got 2 jelly roll quilt tops done, that need borders. I'd buy matching fabric for those. Also, I desperately need new little scissors. Mine are getting dull, except for the very tip. I'd also buy some random fat quarters and notions. I hope it all goes that far!!! lol I love some of yours answers. Such a variety. |
