I'd want to know what accent colors they use in their bedroom. Then I could add that to the creams, tans, and whites.

They might move one day and personal color preferences are important.

I was thinking of suggesting your quilt and here it popped up. I just love it and think it speaks nicely to neutral-gender or color.

Thankyou for the compliment!!

Thankyou! You are so right about colour choices as peoples perception of colour can vary enormously!! I think you just have to follow your own instinct and hope it works!!!!!

I would think of paler and greyed colours like terra cotta, dusty rose, slate blue, sage green, etc. If you keep the contrast down, the overall effect will be neutral but it will match almost any colour they bring into the room.

To me, neutral is something that goes w/ everything - that means whites and ivories. The Alex Anderson quilt looks brown to me - not neutral.

Try to find out what they mean by neutral - Browns and tans to me is not "neutral", but I don't like tans and browns.

Colors are such a personal choice, i hope you can get a better definition. The idea of going to look at their registry is a great idea.

JeannieBobbin 10-19-2011 02:35 AM

Ivory, soft peach and seafoam green.

Little Sue 4.9 10-19-2011 02:44 AM

I wpuld stick with the warmer colors of beiges creams and soft whites. No grays or taupe.

What is neutral to the pastor's mom, may not be neutral to you or the pastor and his wife. I would just ask the recipients what they would like. The quilt wouldn't be a surprise to them, but at least you would know you had given them exactly what they wanted.

jitkaau 10-19-2011 02:55 AM

I would think vanilla pudding colours as well - or perhaps greys.

It'sJustMe 10-19-2011 03:07 AM

Having just read 4 pages of what is neutral, it's clear that neutral means different colors to different people. To me, it would be limited to hues in the lighter range of the value scale, but could include one, some, or all of the colors white, cream, beige, taupe, and gray.
As was suggested, why not ask?

smagruder 10-19-2011 03:09 AM

I would agree with your color thoughts.

Thanks for sharing this, I would like to try this pattern. It would be beautiful in neutrals.

johnnietate1225 10-19-2011 03:27 AM

I looked through some "natural quilts" on-line and saw a beautiful pale blue background with all shades of shells - it was beautiful. That is what I think of when I think of nature - and what is more natural that the ocean and shales? Please let us when what you come up with. I always look forward to seeing the completed quilt of someone who requests suggestions from the Quilting Board members.

Good Luck. And, how sweet of you to make a quilt. That is love!

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 10-19-2011 03:47 AM

I'd stay away from brown. Neutrals are creams. beiges, whites etc. Anything that will let you use any other color you want to decorate with. Anythng will go with them,

noveltyjunkie 10-19-2011 04:01 AM

Cream, ecru, beige, off white, white
I would not consider brown to be neutral.

I agree.
I saw one made by Alex Anderson that had light greens in it.

MissJMac 10-19-2011 04:53 AM

lovspaper - I agree with you 100%. For a "pop of color" I'd use a 2" strip of a rich dark brown as the first border to frame the center of the quilt

jillaine 10-19-2011 05:01 AM

You might also want to find out if their tastes are more modern or traditional. The answer to that will also help you make something pleasing to them.

And one other thought I had: just because the house is painted/decorated in neutral doesn't mean your quilt should be...

Imagine a "neutral" living room, with a rich, jewel-toned lap quilt thrown over the sofa.... or those yummy earthy rich colors-- like eggplant, teal, burgundy...

tlstick 10-19-2011 05:06 AM

I agree using browns tans taupe and there is a pattern which is stunning using 3 or 4 colors, its called flatbread. makes into a beautiful quilt and fast. One has bee posted on the board.

tlstick 10-19-2011 05:10 AM

GemState 10-19-2011 05:38 AM

I made a wedding quilt for our GD last year. It was called White Chocolate and was beautiful shades of creams, whites, beiges and very light browns. It was gorgeous!!

I was thinking of this quilt! It would be pretty in almost any color scheme. I'm a brown lover but some people aren't. I would interpret neutral to also mean not floral, some folks think of flowers as girly.
I'd go back to the source and ask for a little more info they may just mean not folksy, which would mean a more modern design or strip quilt. I think this quilt pattern can go lots of ways. It's not really folk but not too modern.

cdufur 10-19-2011 05:47 AM

I think you're on the right track!

sherian 10-19-2011 05:48 AM

There is no way of knowing. To me netural is blend of
light tan, off white, white, or earthy tans.
But to mil is it no decoration white & plain.
To her only white walls,no pictures on wall or things
sitting anywere. Everything in place. We get along
fine just have different taste.
One more thought: it a gift of love, and they know it.
My Mil will put wharever I get her out like the lap quilt I
made her on her bed at nursing home maybe 3 days. Then can't handle it longer and puts it away, or gives it away, for her that is all she can handle, but tries to have it out, it was a nice lite bird print she had wanted inner self I guess, out the outside self could not hande it.
Can you wait and meet them and tell them your plans & get
their true likes. there is busy pattern & plain

Sierra 10-19-2011 05:48 AM

Have you met, or even seen the bride-to-be? Years ago someone told me that if I want to gift someone and don't know them well, check out what they wear. Women, if they have the means, wear and decorate their houses in tones they feel enhance themselves. It's automatic. And he must like what she likes, right?

Having said that, I have to tell you that the idea of having "neutral" tones used on a wedding bed sounds out of kilter to me. That's one place where it should be a bit lively. Anyway, check HER out.

MYWR 10-19-2011 05:53 AM

creams - beiges - light tans . I am making one for a dear friend who only 'does neutral' I am just the oopposite - so for the past 6 months I have collected various tonal fabrics and I am about to start - so different from my taste which runs to bolds and batiks !!

Kath12 10-19-2011 06:08 AM

Creams, browns, tans or whites and grays

Thanks for posting the directions. I agree this would be a great neutral bed quilt.

Is this the pattern?

Landers 10-19-2011 06:39 AM

A couple of years ago my DSD asked for a neutral colored quilt. I did a Delectable Mountain (Eleanor Burns) one in 2 shades of beige. But I just could help myself, I actually made the center piece with a forest green and Fucia. turned out really pretty!

Sure would like to have this pattern, what is it called?
It is beautiful

Glassquilt 10-19-2011 06:47 AM

Sounds like neutral could be any color group that doesn't stand out.

joyce888 10-19-2011 07:02 AM

I agree on creams and tans. I would also stay away from brown.

VaNella 10-19-2011 07:11 AM

What a beautiful challenge. I would add slate grey to the mix for some variation. Also black is a neutral if you need contrast.

Tinabug 10-19-2011 07:13 AM

I agree with this suggestion. Neutral to me means no dramatic, saturated colors. Softer shades of pretty much any hue. Take a look at the soft ocean colors in some of the nicer spas, very soothing. Look into nature for inspiration,

Bright yellow, lime green and orange!

Earth tone fabrics, would work for me. :-P

EagarBeez 10-19-2011 07:33 AM

most likely whites, off white, beige, taupe, tan, sand. Light colors in the white to light brown family. That would be my guess
