I want to make a quilt for our youth pastor and his soon to be wife as a wedding present. I talked with his mom and she said their home colors will be more "neutral".

I am thinking creams, tans, browns......any suggestions? I liked the "creme brulee" quilt that was posted and then gone..... but it was just two colors.

Creams, tans, browns would be my guess.

ETA: what about doing a sampler with various shades of creams, tans, and browns?

hobo2000 10-18-2011 10:26 AM

You are right on target. Many different colors of white thru ivory, lt tan. They are beautiful when done. No Darks of any kind but some greys are used also.

I've seen some totally gorgeous neutral quilts. A friend of mine did the Eleanor Burns Night and Day in a dark brown and cream. Very striking. I've also seen a log cabin done with white on whites on the light side and white on creams and tans on the dark side.

Sadiemae 10-18-2011 10:55 AM

I agree with tans, creams and browns.

Deborahlees 10-18-2011 11:04 AM

Could also be the greys and or taupe ?????

plainpat 10-18-2011 11:11 AM

Creams, beige, off white & various shades of those colors.

One of the quilt stores in my area had a to die for taupe collection. That collection would make a stunning neutral quilt.

hobbykat1955 10-18-2011 11:49 AM

Agree...tones that go with any other color, beige, white, tan. I'd stay away from dark browns.

3incollege 10-18-2011 11:57 AM

Would it have to be Browns and creams? I thought any color that would be for anyone. Not wild or bold. That's my thought. But i'm only guessing.

cattailsquilts 10-18-2011 12:01 PM

I would find out if they mean gender neutral or color neutral.

LyndaOH 10-18-2011 12:10 PM

I think the Pinwheel/Rail Fence quilt would be beautiful in shades of browns and beiges. I have the pattern available on my blog at http://www.colormequilted.com with one or two corners of the rail fence as pinwheels.

There are lots of different browns and beiges, and I would stick to the warmer shades to give the quilt a homey feel.

I had a request for a Wedding Quilt and the colour palette I was given was 'Pebbles and Cream'!!! I took this as a neutral palette!! This was my interpretation!! Just lots of soft beiges, pinks, turquoises, blues and creams!! They were delighted with it!!!!

That is exactly what I thought of when you said "neutral". To me that means it will go with anything.

RST 10-18-2011 01:00 PM

Are they registered for gifts anywhere? You could look at their registry on line and perhaps get a sense of what they mean by "neutral".

the mother just might be referring to the color of the walls as being neutral,ie white, beige, taupe, green is also considered a neutral color.

KerryK 10-18-2011 01:16 PM

I would think exactly as you have!

That would be my recommendation, also.

raedar63 10-18-2011 02:13 PM

Batiks in the above mentioned colors would be beautiful.

quilter68 10-18-2011 02:16 PM

Creams, tans, browns, and one zinger.

ube quilting 10-18-2011 02:34 PM

You're on the right track. I would find a pattern that would use a wide range of those colors from light to dark. It will blend into a neutral setting better. maybe with a small pop of any rich color like wine or eggplant. I have always liked the log cabin or Hunters star for multi-colored quilts. The HS would be great in three colors and the LC in as many light and dark neutrals as you can collect. Have fun and keep us posted!

katsewnsew 10-18-2011 02:38 PM

That Creme Brulee quilt was fantastic, beautiful neutral colors!

redquilter 10-18-2011 02:47 PM

I wouldn't go with brown or black. I'd stick to creams, beige, white, off white. Wouldn't bring any color into it at all. That's just my 2 cents worth!

what a beautiful pattern and colors, where can I find it and it's name??

Your quilt is beautiful. The pattern with the colors you chose are unique. When people ask for a neutral quilt, it's challenging because they frequently don't know how to correctly make choices of color in a quilt. Yours has enough color to be eye pleasing yet not color specific. Great job!

Peckish 10-18-2011 03:01 PM

One that came from Switzerland? hee hee hee

SOft colors, primarily tone on tone. Nothing too contrasty - something earthy.

I was thinking of suggesting your quilt and here it popped up. I just love it and think it speaks nicely to neutral-gender or color.

maryb119 10-18-2011 04:08 PM

I saw a simple "Yellow Brick Road" quilt done in neutrals and it was beautiful!!! It was different shades and prints all in ivory and beige. It was positivly striking! Neutrals are not my first color choice but they will make a beautiful quilt.

nancylee 10-18-2011 04:12 PM

Hi,
My niece told me she wanted a white/tan, brown and black neutral quilt. I just can't make something that colorless, so I got the Joel Dewberry fabrics, Aviary, in the yellow, blacks, tans. Reall charming, great feel to the fabrics, I am happy making this now!

mamaw 10-18-2011 04:51 PM

I agree with the tans, creams, and browns...but don't forget to add white !

Glassquilt 10-18-2011 05:00 PM

Ask mom for some paint chips. Much easier to work with a palette in hand.

Dolphyngyrl 10-18-2011 05:14 PM

Your spot on with Tans browns creams

mom-6 10-18-2011 05:31 PM

I would check to see if they want pale neutrals or dark neutrals or a mixture. My personal preference is not too pale! We received a lovely all white bedspread as a wedding gift and I always felt like it was a totally gorgeous dirt magnet. Didn't stop me from using it for 20+ years before I washed and dried it into oblivion.

So true.. if the person is NOT a quilter who made this statement she may mean something completely different then a true neutral color pallet.

When in doubt.. ASK... lol
