I'm still trying to get enough nerve to put one on my garage, I live in the burbs, behind the local high school. Have no idea what the neighbors would think.

The only barn quilts I have seen are painted on the side of barns. Is this the same thing as you are getting? Sorry to sound so ignorant. I am a country girl now, but was raised in Brooklyn, NY so I guess you can't always take the city out of the girl! Love the way barns look with their painted quilts. Congrats on yours. Please post pix.:)

In response to Grammyj's Carpenter's Star on her quilting shop:
Very nice! It'll be nice to change it to the other side whenever you want. I won't have that option. |

My MIL just sent me a pic of her new barn quilt!! I think it is funny because this is the only 'quilty'thing she will make because she says a needle and thread scare her!
Keep your fingers crossed that I can post the pic now!! |

So happy you get to brighten the world with a barn quilt. I love seeing them. My husband built a custom cabinet shop on our property and just got the siding on the outside of it. There is the perfect spot for a barn quilt on the end facing the driveway. He agrees a barn quilt would be a nice touch for that space. I thought we'd do a Carpenter's Wheel since it's a cabinet shop. Notice my avitar...we have a variation of a Carpenter's Wheel on our bed. Got a theme going here!

I want to see! I want to see! I want to see!!!! please

I did myself six (6) Barn Quilts last October. They are: Alabama Star , Virginia Star , an appliqued Daisy , Log Cabin , one called This 'n' That , Nine Patch Revisited. While I was gone to a quilt show in Georgia, my husband, son and daughter-in-law hung them for me. Texted me a picture (the only text I have ever opened) , they look GREAT! ! ! Everyone that sees them think they are wonderful. Congrats on getting your own! !

Lucky you!! I love barn quilts and would love to have one.... if I only had a barn.....

that sounds like a great idea, I'm thinkg about one for my back yard santuary.

I'll share a bit of wisdom from local experience. We have a barn quilt trail here. A friend of mine, who teaches art, wanted to join in, so she had her students paint a large one on plywood for the side of our school. It came apart in the weather within 2 years. Our barn quilt group paints on metal and they buy a special paint to hold up outdoors. It's worth the extra investment up front if it will last 10 times longer.
|
Oh, lucky you!!! Wish I had a barn on which to put one. Can't wait to see yours.

We are finishing refurbishing our old barn. I have made it known I want to put a barn quilt up. I need sources for the "how to" part of making one - type of wood (exterior plywood, I would guess), paint, etc. When this thing is finally up in the air about 35 ft, I want it to last!! Can you suggest sources I can research?

As I said in an earlier post, the building is my DH's wood shop. Carpenter's Wheel would be so appropriate. I am partial to eight pointed star blocks, hence my decision. When I asked my DH for color input, he declined. Says he has absolutely no preference. So I don't think he'd care about the block itself (but I'll have to ask, now that you mention it). As for colors, I like all kinds of color, but don't want to scare my neighbors.
IF those colors look good on your barn. |

You have the basic idea. Most in my area are done on wood or similar material and then hung on the barn. I think it's funny to call them barn quilts, when they are really just one quilt block, but I guess it's easier to say "barn quilt." For my non-quilting friends, I'm calling it my quilt sign.
the quilt I'm working on now is just one block------------a 60" carpenters wheel-------------so a one block barn quilt deserves its name. |

Do the neighbors pay your bills? There's surely one sore head in the town, but don't worry about him. Besides, teh barn quilt will come in handy telling people where the neighbors live.-------------4 houses past the barn quilt! |

Hang that quilt block. You'll love it. I can't wait to get mine up the last week in June.
A lady who read my novel, "Grow Old With Me," painted a quilt block for our house! It's a small 2x2. It arrived last week. I'm using it for a speaking engagement, and then I'll display it on the side of our home. |
How cool! Wish I was as lucky.
|
Oooh....congrats to you! I have been considering one for the very bland brick end of our house just to liven things up...they are gorgeous!

I love barn quilts! My husband recently made me some to hang on the wall in my sewing room. They weren't painted bright colors. He used a wood dye/stain so the grain would show through.
|
Do let us know what design you pick, and of course a picture when it is finished!
|
Love your wooden ones podunk princess. Last year I saw a posting on here someone's dh did a tile floor in her sewing room laid out in block pattern.

My curmudgeon of a DH said he wanted to surprise me, but couldn't, because he wouldn't know what block to use. I was totally shocked! We have a friend who offered to do the work for us for free! Of course we'll give him something, but it won't break the bank. We're providing the materials. If I'm lucky, I'll have it before the local quilt show, but I'm not counting my chickens. I'm just ecstatic that I'm finally going to have one!!!! |
