I'm still trying to get enough nerve to put one on my garage, I live in the burbs, behind the local high school. Have no idea what the neighbors would think.

Dont' feel bad...I've been here 30, and we're still renovating, too.

You have the basic idea. Most in my area are done on wood or similar material and then hung on the barn. I think it's funny to call them barn quilts, when they are really just one quilt block, but I guess it's easier to say "barn quilt." For my non-quilting friends, I'm calling it my quilt sign.

jdavis 06-12-2012 08:42 AM

In response to Grammyj's Carpenter's Star on her quilting shop:
Very nice! It'll be nice to change it to the other side whenever you want. I won't have that option.

Keep your fingers crossed that I can post the pic now!!

Good for her! I have to tell you, when I get mine hung, We'll have a similar situation to your MIL's....We have a camper parked on one side all summer, and my husband just built and installed an arbor/bench in the middle of the yard (incorporated with some new landscaping). Anyone wanting to see the barn quilt will have to slow down or stop completely, in order to see it without some obstruction! But from my kitchen window I'll have a clear view.

Go ahead and put one up on your garage. It's your home and you should be able to decorate it as you wish. I would venture to say they would enjoy seeing it. And it would be a good conversation starter for neighbors you don't know well. Who knows, you might meet some quilting neighbors you didn't know you have.

There is the perfect spot for a barn quilt on the end facing the driveway. He agrees a barn quilt would be a nice touch for that space. I thought we'd do a Carpenter's Wheel since it's a cabinet shop. Notice my avitar...we have a variation of a Carpenter's Wheel on our bed. Got a theme going here!

As I said in an earlier post, the building is my DH's wood shop. Carpenter's Wheel would be so appropriate. I am partial to eight pointed star blocks, hence my decision. When I asked my DH for color input, he declined. Says he has absolutely no preference. So I don't think he'd care about the block itself (but I'll have to ask, now that you mention it). As for colors, I like all kinds of color, but don't want to scare my neighbors.

I did myself six (6) Barn Quilts last October. They are: Alabama Star , Virginia Star , an appliqued Daisy , Log Cabin , one called This 'n' That , Nine Patch Revisited. While I was gone to a quilt show in Georgia, my husband, son and daughter-in-law hung them for me. Texted me a picture (the only text I have ever opened) , they look GREAT! ! ! Everyone that sees them think they are wonderful. Congrats on getting your own! !

spokanequilter 06-12-2012 12:31 PM

I'll share a bit of wisdom from local experience. We have a barn quilt trail here. A friend of mine, who teaches art, wanted to join in, so she had her students paint a large one on plywood for the side of our school. It came apart in the weather within 2 years. Our barn quilt group paints on metal and they buy a special paint to hold up outdoors. It's worth the extra investment up front if it will last 10 times longer.

MaryAnnMc 06-13-2012 04:00 AM

Oh, lucky you!!! Wish I had a barn on which to put one. Can't wait to see yours.

Metal? What kind? What kind of paint?

IowaStitcher 06-13-2012 04:52 AM

We are finishing refurbishing our old barn. I have made it known I want to put a barn quilt up. I need sources for the "how to" part of making one - type of wood (exterior plywood, I would guess), paint, etc. When this thing is finally up in the air about 35 ft, I want it to last!! Can you suggest sources I can research?

Can you get the name of the metal and the paint used? Thanks

If I were doing a carpenter's wheel, I'd probably keep with building colors. A brick red for the main color then a golden tan to mimic wood planks. Some variation of a very light beige for the back ground color, cream, ecru.......

IF those colors look good on your barn.

.

the quilt I'm working on now is just one block------------a 60" carpenters wheel-------------so a one block barn quilt deserves its name.

Do the neighbors pay your bills? There's surely one sore head in the town, but don't worry about him. Besides, teh barn quilt will come in handy telling people where the neighbors live.-------------4 houses past the barn quilt!

the actual application makes no difference, if it's a quilt block displayed outdoors it's a BARN QUILT!

Hang that quilt block. You'll love it. I can't wait to get mine up the last week in June.

A lady who read my novel, "Grow Old With Me," painted a quilt block for our house! It's a small 2x2. It arrived last week. I'm using it for a speaking engagement, and then I'll display it on the side of our home.

OHSue 06-13-2012 08:47 PM

How cool! Wish I was as lucky.

taimi 06-13-2012 08:55 PM

Oooh....congrats to you! I have been considering one for the very bland brick end of our house just to liven things up...they are gorgeous!

I love barn quilts! My husband recently made me some to hang on the wall in my sewing room. They weren't painted bright colors. He used a wood dye/stain so the grain would show through.

starshine 06-14-2012 11:16 AM

Do let us know what design you pick, and of course a picture when it is finished!

starshine 06-14-2012 11:18 AM

Love your wooden ones podunk princess. Last year I saw a posting on here someone's dh did a tile floor in her sewing room laid out in block pattern.

Those are unique. A nice addition to your home. They look very classy.

If any of you actually "subscribed" to this post, se my new post "I got my Barn Quilt" posted Sept 2, 2012!!!

My curmudgeon of a DH said he wanted to surprise me, but couldn't, because he wouldn't know what block to use. I was totally shocked!
We have a friend who offered to do the work for us for free! Of course we'll give him something, but it won't break the bank. We're providing the materials. If I'm lucky, I'll have it before the local quilt show, but I'm not counting my chickens. I'm just ecstatic that I'm finally going to have one!!!!

I keep saying I'm going to make a couple, but so far I've not! Looking for the right metal "signage board".

Do the neighbors pay your mortgage and taxes? To heck with what they think.

If you're going to use the carpenter's wheel pattern, how about using woody colors, tan, brown, dark cherry

All you need is a flat surface the size you want. Make one about 4' x 4' and hang it on the front of the house, or the end of the house or on a fence. Or make a smaller 2' x 2' or so and hang it like you'd hang a for sale sign.

GrannieAnnie 09-03-2012 11:05 AM

LOL, jokes on me. this is an old thread----------------but I answered a couple posts with almost identical responses.

I'm still engineering my quilt!
