I'm getting a barn quilt! I'm getting a barn quilt!

Can you tell I'm excited?
My curmudgeon of a DH said he wanted to surprise me, but couldn't, because he wouldn't know what block to use. I was totally shocked!
We have a friend who offered to do the work for us for free! Of course we'll give him something, but it won't break the bank. We're providing the materials. If I'm lucky, I'll have it before the local quilt show, but I'm not counting my chickens. I'm just ecstatic that I'm finally going to have one!!!!

lorraine43 06-11-2012 09:02 AM

I'll be watching the "Pictures" section for your barn quilt! I think they are really neat:o

QuiltE 06-11-2012 01:27 PM

What a nice "surprise" from your DH!
Have you decided on your block yet? ..... and do you have a barn? or will it be on a garage?

Perfect timing, if you could have it done for your quilt show. Good Luck!!

TacoMama 06-11-2012 01:35 PM

Hang it on the house, hang it on a fence, hang it on two posts!

earthwalker 06-11-2012 11:11 PM

We have no barn....but there's a big blank wall of our house that could fit about 4. I am not holding my breath....we have been here for about 14 years and still haven't finished renovating.

QM 06-11-2012 11:28 PM

Yes, please post it!

ILoveToQuilt 06-12-2012 03:31 AM

The only barn quilts I have seen are painted on the side of barns. Is this the same thing as you are getting? Sorry to sound so ignorant. I am a country girl now, but was raised in Brooklyn, NY so I guess you can't always take the city out of the girl! Love the way barns look with their painted quilts. Congrats on yours. Please post pix.:)

meanmom 06-12-2012 03:43 AM

I swear Iam going to make one this summer. I am going to hang one on my patio. I also would like to hang a small one above my garage. Not sure how that will go over with DH yet. I need to make it first. I have paint, I can get the wood from my brother. I just need to decide on a pattern. The LQS has one I really like. I might go take a picture of theirs and change it up a little. I look forward to seeing yours.

Her is my barn quilt I painted. It's on the front of my quilt shop, I painted a different one one the back so I can turn it over. This is where I quilt, it is in a different building than my sewing shop.

jeanneb52 06-12-2012 04:22 AM

I'm still waiting for my "Christmas gift" barn quilt!!! I picked the carpenter's wheel in honor o DH who is a retired carpenter. I'm thinking of changing the block if he doesn't get his butt in gear LOL
Congrads.

My MIL just sent me a pic of her new barn quilt!! I think it is funny because this is the only 'quilty'thing she will make because she says a needle and thread scare her!
Keep your fingers crossed that I can post the pic now!!

KGoodhand 06-12-2012 04:48 AM

Yeah it worked!!!! She designed the block herself!

MarthaT 06-12-2012 04:59 AM

So happy you get to brighten the world with a barn quilt. I love seeing them. My husband built a custom cabinet shop on our property and just got the siding on the outside of it. There is the perfect spot for a barn quilt on the end facing the driveway. He agrees a barn quilt would be a nice touch for that space. I thought we'd do a Carpenter's Wheel since it's a cabinet shop. Notice my avitar...we have a variation of a Carpenter's Wheel on our bed. Got a theme going here!

This is so cool and it shows us we don't need a barn or a big space at all to enjoy having our own little barn quilt! Congratulations and lucky you J!

MarieM 06-12-2012 05:46 AM

Oh what fun. I'll be in WNY Cattaragus Co. in Aug, will your barn quilt be done by then? I'd love to see it.

needles3thread 06-12-2012 05:59 AM

craftygma - what are you doing with the other 2.........pictures & price please.

stefanib123 06-12-2012 06:02 AM

On the drive from my house to Lexington,( Ky.) I pass tons. I usually take a photo, even though I have already taken many of each one.

Im going to put one up on my fence someday.

A1penny 06-12-2012 06:40 AM

I'm a country gal who now lives in the city! I absolutely love the barn quilts! Wish I could do one on my apartment building......now that would be funny! DO post a photo when your barn quilt is finished.
That is a great present from you DH!

Pam Riggs 06-12-2012 07:50 AM

Cpmgrats! I see them all over the place here. Our elementary and high school has one in their yard. Love it and your Dh did good.

Pam Riggs 06-12-2012 07:52 AM

Hey A1penny: why not do a small one and hang it on your apartment door?

needles3thread 06-12-2012 07:55 AM

I saw some barn quilts in an Iowa shop made of black metal-pattern was cut out to let whatever is behind show.
2 different sizes for sale. They should have a long lifetime, & would really show on a light colored building.
I didn't buy one, but think they are so nice even though no bright colors on it.

I think it's a version of Ohio Star (shame on me for not remembering the name). There will be a star within a star, and the center of the small star will be a square on-point. It's going on a 22x22' Garage-type building, which is used as a wood shop. We have an overhead door on the right half of the front, and the left half is a blank canvas, except we planted a lilac on the left corner. Before I started quilting, I envisioned painting a sunflower seed packet there, but my DH hates sunflowers, and didn't want me to paint directly on the building (I never thought about putting it on a piece of wood).
