I remember when a bag of Poly Fil would have a free wood turner in the bag. It was 12" long and had a rounded and flat pointed end. I haven't found any other like it. It's the one I reach for all the time.

Cris 02-20-2011 02:19 PM

One site recommended a pair of hemostats

TexasSunshine 02-20-2011 02:22 PM

I know what you mean, I got mine at Eleanor Burn's Quilt in a Day. Look on her website.

sammy89 02-20-2011 02:40 PM

Its a bamboo point turner , I got mine at Joann's in the quilting section, bit Ihave seen them in the notions isle since many use them for turning collars and cuffs.

tjradj 02-20-2011 03:28 PM

You might also look under "Bone turner" as some of the early ones were made of bone.

peaceandjoy 02-20-2011 03:34 PM

I use the Purple Thang, it's good for more than one use, but you could also look for bone folders in the scrapbook/card making section. Most are made of bone, but there are ones that are wood/bamboo, too.

DirtyPaw 02-20-2011 03:43 PM

Elenore Burns has those on her site I am pretty sure. I watched her use one. It is called a point turner here is the link.

you want the Purple Thang.

Paulett 02-20-2011 04:44 PM

The closest tool of that description could be a "bone folder" used in paper folding projects..I have a "plastic" type one that I use only I used a Dremel tool to cut an "eye" in the wide end and use it to pull elastic thru casings in slacks etc. This way I can use it several ways in different projects.

montanajan 02-20-2011 04:52 PM

The one I have was called a 'bone' - looks sort of like a flat piece of bone or ivory - know just what you're looking for; just cannot remember where I got mine.

grumpy90650 02-20-2011 04:53 PM

i got the wooden one (also have the white plastic one) but the wooden one i got at joanns....i think they are better than stillettos or anything very sharp that can go thru fabric.....gina

I believe what your looking for is what they call a 'wooden iron'. She has them for sale at the address below. I hope this is helpful.

The Purple Thang works well for this too. I also use a lacquered chop stick.

Yes, I have one made of wood and one made of white plastic. Don't know what it's called. Only thing I know is each time I need it I can't find either one of them. WhenI did garment sewing, I used the rounded end to round out collars as I turned the right side out.

jitkaau 02-20-2011 05:42 PM

I have a small plastic rule that is also a turner, Alex Anderson was advertising her multifunction tool that is also a turner - perhaps you could look that up. It's called the essential tool:

tuppermern 02-20-2011 05:45 PM

When I can't find my bamboo turner-----I use the tool from my cricket machine! It's plastic, but the same shape. Almost like a finger nail file. It's used for creasing folds on paper cards, but works for fabric corners, too!

Judie 02-20-2011 05:48 PM

It's called a "Point Turner".. generally sold at most fabric stores in their notions section. I know JoAnn's carries them... The one I have it bamboo.. Very handy.

You can also use other things, but you want something that has a nice rounded point so you don't poke through the corner.. many times the corners are trimmed closely and that makes them pretty easy to poke right through.

I believe you are looking for a wood iron. Is one end wider than the other end? I have seen them at Joanns. Also, all quilt stores usually carry one version or another.

Izaquilter 02-20-2011 05:50 PM

That's the one I was thinking of & couldn't find it! Great job!

haylillan 02-20-2011 05:51 PM

is it a botkin i think thats how its spelled with large eye in one end ball on other end

danade 02-20-2011 05:56 PM

Speaking of point turners, I recently saw a tip in a magazine for beginning sewers that I had bought for my sewing student:

To get a good turned point, don't put your needle down and turn your point abruptly, but take two stitched across the top of the angle and then turn your stitches downward and you will have a perfect point, not rounded at all, when you turn it out. I didn't believe it but it worked! Learn something every day!

I use a orange stick its suppose to be used for manicure it does a real good job on corners and they come in plastic or metal

That little piece of plastic is a total gem that works perfectly and doesn't cost anything.

Joanie2, show me next time I see you 'cause I can't envision it. And I just went to the fridge and checked the milk.

Linda go to the Quilt in a Day website. Search notions, on page 4 there is a bodkin. I bought one of these in Paducah about 8 years ago. It is a handy little sucker. There is also a wooden thing that looks like what you described.

I haven't seen a fabric store that doesn't carry this item. As a matter of fact I was just looking at them at Fabric Depot in Portland, Oregon yesterday. It was made by Clover and they had all Clover things 50% off, it might still be going on. But it was not wood it was a hard white plastic. Good luck.

OHSue 02-20-2011 07:01 PM

Called a point turner, not a quilting notion, but for sewing clothes.

i have one too. I bought it at a fabric store. I think it was under $5.00, but I forget the name of it.

Summer Spice 02-20-2011 07:13 PM

I got mine w/ the" EZ Quilting -Make A Sunflower Quilt.'
This kit came w/ Quilt pattern, Easy Dresden ruler, Bamboo Pointer Creaser, Iron-on appliques, years ago from Walmart for $1.75

karen Cicio 02-20-2011 07:21 PM

I buy the kabob sticks from Publix there are about 100 in a package. I use the flat side. They work great. I'm always giving one away to my friends when we sew together. The package is very cheap and last a long time.

First, let me apologize if this has already been posted...
I didn't take the time to read through all of them.

Look up "wooden iron"..in google.

I tried to post a picture..no luck.

Fran Juern 02-20-2011 07:24 PM

You didn't dream it up, but I just use the top of a Ballpoint pen that is kind of a rounded point. Not much danger of poking thru with this.

crankygran 02-20-2011 08:00 PM

It is a point turner. Mine is made of bamboo and has one end pointed and the other end is rounded. Clotilde, Quilt in a Day and most LQS will have them

Dolphyngyrl 02-20-2011 08:02 PM

just get a purple thang thats what i use

sylvia storey 02-20-2011 08:02 PM

it's called point turner and would probably be sold more with sewing notions than quilting notions

An orangewood stick, it is, or used to be used in manicures has a small end that is flat so you're not as likely to poke thru. They are wood. I would imagine you could find them at Wally World in the nail section. I do believe it is pointed on the other end.

I use a white plastic one made for pushing out points. Look in the notions in your local sewing shop.
