I have a rule that I must finish a top, then clean my room before I start another one. Otherwise my life would be full of UFO's.

Well, I received my kit for Judy Niemeyer's Bali Wedding Star in the mail the other day. The colors are stunning and it is intricate. I CANT WAIT!!!

I have lost all interest in my current project that is only about a third done. I found myself digging through the directions of the Bali quilt last night instead of piecing the current top.

I promised myself that I would finish the current wallhanging by Friday of Memorial Day weekend and then I would start the Bali but that seems just an eternity away. So tonight right after dinner, I am going to dig in.

nursie76 05-19-2010 03:51 PM

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seamstome 05-19-2010 03:53 PM

Dinner is nuking...Im going to swallow quickly!

Marjpf 05-19-2010 03:55 PM

I have the same rule otherwise I just go off every which way all the time. But once in awhile you just have to break your own rules! Sounds like a good time to do that.

Maride 05-19-2010 03:57 PM

Life is too short for rules. Do what makes you happy.

CarrieAnne 05-19-2010 04:06 PM

Go for it!

sewgull 05-19-2010 05:12 PM

'Bali Wedding Star' sounds as if the colors are tropical.
Must be a beautiful quilt.

justwannaquilt 05-19-2010 05:46 PM

OMG! I just looked up this quilt online and it is an understatement to say that it is BEAUTIFUL! I don't think I would be able to wait to start it either. I think it would be a rule breaker for sure! Good luck!

Honey 05-19-2010 06:33 PM

Beautiful doesn't begin to describe this quilt!!!

DebraK 05-19-2010 06:46 PM

I'm drooling with envy.

sahm4605 05-19-2010 07:09 PM

it is really pretty and looks fairly labor intensive. can't wait till i have the skills to attempt that one.

craftybear 05-19-2010 07:43 PM

have fun quilting, you can make your own rules!

seamstome 05-19-2010 08:39 PM

Well, considering the pattern has two booklets that come with it....challenging is the word. This is one of those bucket list quilts. It may take me two years to finish it.

I didnt get very far tonight. It's a kit and like every kit I had to pull out the ugly fabric. I HATE WHEN THEY SUBSTITUTE!!!! Yanked out about 15% of the fabric. Got that done and subbed in some from my stash. I will probably go to my favorite batik shop and pick up a few more to sub in.

This quilt requires an unbelievable amount of pre-sewing organization which is what I will be doing for this weekend. There are around 200 2 1/2 inch strips that need to be cut into a few thousand little squares that are numbered in order and ziplocked into baggies before you can begin to sew.

Ditter43 05-19-2010 09:04 PM

You sound like me with a can of mixed nuts....they call to me and I lose control so I eat them....At least there are no calories in quilting! I saw the bali wedding star and it is beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with it!!
Now get back and finish the project you were working on. It will give you incentive to finish more quickly!!

Ditter

KiwiQuilter 05-19-2010 10:22 PM

It's a slippery slope... but filled with fun :)

I'd go for it.

Pam 05-20-2010 06:05 AM

Oh, pretty! Have fun.

seamstome 05-20-2010 06:13 AM

Well I cant quilt for two days but I can dream. I was dreaming about cutting the squares last night in my sleep.

My justification is that I am "stuck" on the third done quilt. It was a kit and they sent me a FQ that was cut short. I didnt realize it and now I am 3/8 inch short to make a square...I guess I have to go shopping on my lunch today.

I have lost all interest in my current project that is only about a third done. I found myself digging through the directions of the Bali quilt last night instead of piecing the current top.
When I find this happening I figure I'm not getting anything accomplished anyway so I might as well start the new project to get me going again.

kwiltkrazy 05-20-2010 08:55 AM

OMG' I couldn't wait to start that quilt either, have a good time in piecing heaven.

You know what they say: "All rules are made to be broken." :D I'd go for it.

martha jo 05-20-2010 11:39 AM

Can you show us a picture and tell us where you ordered it from? Sounds interesting.

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-20-2010 11:40 AM

Break your rule! Work on the bali and it may give you the push to finish the other quilt! Sometimes a quilt needs to sit for awhile.

Bevanger 05-20-2010 12:15 PM

I can't wait to see it

littlehud 05-20-2010 02:47 PM

Yipeee. Go for it. I can't wait to see.

amma 05-20-2010 03:09 PM

Glad you decided to break this rule, some rules are just made to be broken
I can't wait to see this quilt :D:D:D

smagruder 05-20-2010 04:42 PM

Be sure to show us your progress... as you go..."friend!"

Lisa 05-20-2010 04:47 PM

Spoken like a true quilter!

Karen's Kreations 05-21-2010 03:33 AM

That quilt is stunning - I wouldn't be able to wait either. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Enjoy!

denilynne 05-21-2010 04:02 AM

I think you have different insiration on differnet days. Some days you feel like finishing that simple 9-patch. Other days, you have more energy and creativity to get into something more complex. You have to go with it! You'll get back to your other projects - you might get weary of the current project and go back to other ones - it all works out. No rules RULES!

Up4BigChal 05-21-2010 04:56 AM

Wow!!! You should be proud of yourself!! I wish I could be so dedicated Can't wait to see Your Bali Start

tntgranny 05-21-2010 04:58 AM

Katherine Hepburn had a saying something like "If you live by the rules, you miss all the fun." Go for it!

bob1414 05-21-2010 05:06 AM

Sometimes I'll put a "work in progress" away and move on to something else but I always go back and finish it. If I'm not inspired, it's a chore to work on a particular top. I always get reinspired after a break. Oh, I have the "Bali Wedding Star" pattern "box" too! I'm excited to choose fabric for it and begin! I think this quilt will take a long time to complete and I think it will be on that I'll have to put away, work on something else and then take it out again. I get bored looking at and working on the same thing for an extended time - maybe it's ADD!!
Anyway, don't worry about putting something away - just don't start several!! Good luck!

OmaForFour 05-21-2010 06:28 AM

I did too! This is to die for! I also looked at other quilts on quiltsbythebay.com SOOO MANY BEAUTIFUL THINGS TO DO! I wish I were a lot younger than 71. I am not sure I have enough time to do all I want!

I've lived by Ms. Hepburn's quote for many years (see my signature line).

:)

I say, go for it! The wallhanging will be waiting for you when you are ready to return to it.

biloxigirl 05-21-2010 06:48 AM

That's what gallon zip loc bags are for. Put the unfinished project in a bag and move on

biloxigirl 05-21-2010 06:49 AM

I knew there was a good reason that I loved Katherine Hepburn!

iltoaz 05-21-2010 07:00 AM

Isn't it fun to start a new project.
