I'm loving this stitch!
Thanks to a previous thread, I programmed a "serpentine stitch" into my Janome 6600 and began quilting a cuddle quilt on the diagonal yesterday. I'm not even sure I need to cross-hatch in the other direction. With the waviness, it has a softness to it that complements the plain 6" squares. It goes quickly and I am more than happy. At least it's a step closer to learning FMQ....a big scary jump for me!

I just quilted a quilt with my Bernina serpentine stitch this week. I really like it. I put the bar on the back of the foot and did lines about 1-1/2 inches down the whole quilt. To me it looks like a non pattern like meander and adds texture but does not detract from the quilt pattern. I will use it again when I am stuck for a quilting design.

I use the stitch a lot when doing crosshatch quilting. It makes wavy squares.

On my Bernina 440 it is the stitch #4. It is the stitch that does several stitches along a Zig Zag pattern and you just open up the stitch length until you get a nice serpentine without the stitches being too long.

Thanks Tartan. I'm not at home now with my machine (Artista 180), but I think I know which stitch that is. I'll have to play with it and see what I can do. I like the look of serpentine quilting a lot.

been playing with my 401 on the different stitches and the serpentine has been mentioned a lot. I do my own version but testing for couple of quilts in mind.

My machine only straight stitches. I just FMQ and I have gotten pretty good at it.

I use the serpentine stitch also. One lady in our guild quilts all her quilts with the serpentine stitch on the diagonal, one way using her walking foot.
You can also free-motion quilt the serpentine stitch. Place 2 hands on the fabric and move your hands in gentle curves....S shapes...think of a snake. (the non-poisonous ones:)) See the example on the blue section of the table runner I quilted. Don't worry if the lines are not spaced the same, just have fun! |

I believe it's #26 on my Janome 6600... Sorry, it's too early in the morning to go look...

I just discovered this week that I can use the serpentine stitch on my machine to sew leftover batting pieces together and it worked much better than using a zig-zag. The join was nearly invisible and no tunneling like I can get with the zig-zag. I've got so many stitches that I've never bothered to play with. I really need to figure out what to do with them.

I will have to try the serpentine stitch on the baby quilts I make. Do you mind sharing what the previous thread was that showed you how to program the stitch into your Janome. I also have a Janome and I would love to have that info.
