I know all you "seasoned" quilters will not think this is much, but I just made my very first block!!! No...not quilt...block. This is all new to me and I am thrilled to get started. One of my goals was to learn to quilt and I have started...Jan 2! Yay! I made some half square triangles and put them together and I also made a hexagon flower...you know, like the Grandmother's Flower Garden. I love hand work and someone had given me a little kit. I decided now was the time! I can hardly wait for tomorrow to do more!

I'm not laughing. I was right where you are just a few months ago. These folks coached me through some UGLY practice blocks and gave me great tips. I'm still not up to the level of most of the rest, but I am half way through quilt #3. :)
I love your excitement. Makes me get excited all over again. Isn't it fun to create. Keep it up.
WooHoo!!!! :D:D:D
I think we all can remember the excitement of out first blocks :D:D:D I can't wait to see what you are working on!!! |
I remember how excited I was with my first block. It was an Ohio Star block and I thought it was wonderful. My next block was "Sister's Choice". I have to admit that I love making those two blocks.
Enjoy!!! |
I think that it is great that you are so excited!!!!!! Keep hold of that feeling. Before long you will have a lot more first along the way!
Just keep going and don't be afraid to try new things. Can't wait to see pictures of your work.

if there could be only one most exciting thing for "seasoned" quilters, it would be sharing the joy with brand new quilters. :-) |
Yaaaa for you. Would love to see pictures. :-D
 you go girl!!!! I remember mine! Take a picture and hang is proudly!
Keep going girl. I'm so excited for you as we all remember that first block. Have a wonderful New Year and more blocks.
Congrats!! Some day I should post a photo of my first quilt (I just had to mend it for my 19 year old daughter who loves it.). It's, um, UGLY and so poorly put together. It's going to need a lot more mending. When I see the firsts on this forum they are so so so so far ahead of my first.
Quilting will enchance your life--so go make another one. :-D |
I remember that feeling!! How great it is, and it is a BIG thing. :-D
Keep on going, and when you get that first row done, you will be crowing!!!! So happy for you, and welcome to the world of addicted quilters. There is no cure, and we will enable you as much as we can! :-D |

Sounds like you're on a roll. You'll have your first quilt done in no time. Don't forget to show pictures.
I still get excited when I see a pieced block come together the way it is supposed to look. I guess I have learned some tricks to help me on here and other places.
It is a pretty amazing moment when you realize.. Hey! I can do this!!! Congratulations!!! It is unfortunately a disorder in which you will find you need to do more.. and more and.. well it doesnt go away it only gets worse over time. I have it, everyone here has it and the longer you spend time here the firmer hold it will get on you. Luckily its not fattening at all or I would be in serious trouble. Show us a picture!!! and keep up the good work.

Pictures!! We love pictures! And it's this quilting thing fun?
Good for you! After making many quilts (but can't consider myself 'seasoned') I still get a thrill with the first block made for a new quilt. May you always experience that joy!
Congrats!! You are on your way!!

If you're lucky, that excitement will remain with you for years and years! Congratulations on taking your first big step! This is a hobby that will keep you interested for a lifetime--be sure to post pics!
Congratulations, and keep up the good work.

When I retired from teaching, I taught quilting at a local Sew & Vac shop. I would use traded in machines to teach sewing & for those who wanted to learn to quilt, I would have them make a pot holder. I wanted them to go through the complete process from piecing the top to binding. They would be so proud of their completed project.
Oh yes...its MUCH!!! Its MUCH!!! Its a start to a wonderful and fun new life! So....show pics, we wanna see and share your excitement!
Your post brought back memories of my first quilt. It was a bowtie quilt I made for my first grandson. Many years have passed but I still remember the good feeling of accomplishment! Keep up the good work!!

Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of quilting. The old proverb says something like "A journey begins with a single step." You've taken your first steps and are on your way. I have some suggestions, that may have already been given to you, but here goes:
Try everything. You won't know what you love and what you don't until you try. Take classes. If you have a local quilt shop, see what they have to offer. And there are many online classes you can take, too. Embrace constructive criticism. We all continue to learn. But don't let anyone make you feel bad because you've done something different. Which leads me to my next one -- Avoid the "quilt police"! Anyone who tells you that there's only one way to do something cannot teach you because they refuse to learn. Find different quilting groups. You've found us, here, but look for a local group -- a guild or a group that meets at a quilt store. You always learn from others. And last, but most important, have fun! |
That is what we like to see. Excitement in a beginner. Be sure to post a picture when you get the top done, or even when you have a few blocks. We love to look at each others work.
I was an experienced sewer, but had never quilted before. My first quilt was from the book, 'The art of machine piecing'. I sleep under the quilt each night. Many quilts have followed but the first is always so special.
When I bead and make a mistake I call it God's Bead. It reminds me that I am not perfect. In my mind I translate this to quilts and corners and points. It's okay to make a mistake! You are the only one in the world that will know that it is there. Good luck an happy quilting. |
It IS much! Your excitement speaks of good things to come for you as a quilter! (I am still hand quilting my first quilt - for over a decade now. It is a king sized bed quilt, has a bazillion WRONG's, but is cute anyway and I will post a picture some time. What makes me laugh most are the huge hand stitches I started with compared to the small ones that I do now.)
Yeah!! Another quilter. It is always great when someone else gets the bug.
I think it is wonderful that you are so excited. I was there 18 years ago and I am still excited about quilting. I wish when I made my first blocks that I had noted somewhere on the block in the corner on the back just when I made it and what the pattern was. I look back at my very first quilt and remember making it but I can' remember the details I mentioned. I thought later that I should have started taking pictures of the blocks instead and made a photo book of them with the information. Just a thought for you. It keeps the excitement going.

Good for you! You're going to love it and you'll be hooked forever!
I'm excited for you :) I remember the first thing I quilted and how excited I was. I have to say that quilting never gets old or boring for me, I have been quilting for 25 years! I love to do applique, I prefer doing it by hand and sitting in front if the tv! Please share some pics with us!!
I saw your post about your second block which was called Sister's Choice. Could you please tell me where I might find that pattern?
Thanks |
