What is a dear jane quilt?
I haven't a clue either. Thanks for asking.
Go to the top and do a search for Dear Jane, there are lots of posts it is a sampler type quilt with rather small blocks.
I don't have a clue either, but I don't think any question is a stupid question....except if you don't ask..LOL can't wait to see what it is myself.
I think if you do a search or go to the picture gallery, you should find them. Here's a pretty one.

From what I understand it is a sampler quilt with small blocks. There is a book or CD that you purchase that has all the patterns in it. They are lovely and the block are at all different levels of difficulty.
Its a quilt that has way to many different blocks in it. I refuse to even try to do it. I believe if I ever do make the quilt it will be official that I have lost my mind, just like the lady who made the original.

and this one.....

Not stupid! Smart for asking!!
I did'nt know either, but never asked. But seeing some of them posted, they are just like the 72 different block quilt I made years ago for a raffle...I called it "Country Sampler"
Okay, we're giving leatheflea the award for best response ever! I'm laughing out loud at my computer right now!
But seriously, I do intend to make a Dear Jane someday. I'm not enamored with the colors of the original, but I've seen some really beautiful and colorful versions of the quilt. |
I think that "dear jane" is from a real life story of the woman who made the first one? It is an incredible quilt of tiny, difficult blocks and a lot of them. It is right up there with one of those patterns listed under "do before I die". I think I'll pass myself. They are nice but not something I won't to do. I think the people who do conquer the dear jane can give themselves a big pat on the back. Kind of like those who do a Grandmother's Flowergarden or the Oh My Gosh quilt.
My question is...what is an avatar quilt???
I love your avatar. That's really neat.
It's the one placed in the picture to the left. Your avatar is your red barn.
I think I'd really like to do this. (Because I don't already have at least 50 quilts on my "todo" list...) Maybe somebody will start a group up again?
That isn't a stupid question. The only stupid question is the one that you want an answer to and don't ask anyone. LOL

Thanks for asking the question. I thought of Mary Jane shoes when I saw the question....Duh. I just learned you could go to top of page and ask questions too. So thanks for that info.
Never too old to learn, they say. |
No such thing as a stupid question here. If you don't ask, you will never know. I love the Dear Jane quilt, but don't desire to make one. I truly admire anyone who makes one.
Jane Stickles made a quilt while waiting for her husband to come home from war - the Civil War. She kept track of the number of pieces in all those tiny blocks. "Dear Jane" quilts are those made to replicate the original. There is a book out about it, with the patterns. I saw a "Dear Jane" this past weekend at a local quilt show. It was phenomenal!
I've made my first two Dear Jane blocks. Starting with the most difficult first, to get them out of the way. With that first little block (4 and a half freaking hours!), I was most definitely questioning Jane's sanity!!

Brenda researched the story of Jane Stickles quilt. The original quilt made in 1863 hangs in The Bennington Museum in Vermont for a short time of the year. I would love to see it one day. I have a design wall of the 4 1/2" blocks I have done so far - if you click on the link below and then click on the individual block it will enlarge it. Please PM me if I can help any further. I was always told that the only stupid question is the one you do not ask.
a lady name jane made a sampler quilt during the civil war...there is a book with all the squares....and then there are a lot of variations to this quilt....and BTW, there are no dumb questions, especially in quilting!!!
actually I learned to quilt by asking a lot of stupid questions but came to find out that a lot of other quilters needed answers to the same question. So keep right on asking them because it helps others too!
I posted as a new topic as I couldn't find my answer here.
Dear Jane is a trademarked name by Brenda Papakatis, a quilter from Indiana who developed a book from the blocks on a quit in the Bennington Vt Historical Museum. The quilt was made in the mid 1880's by Jane Stickle who was a quiltmaker in the the southern Vermont area. I believe her grave is in Bennington. It is an amazing work of miniature blocks which no two are alike. There is a large cult followin of thoe making the quilt with retreats and other activities. The quilt has been made as a reproduction quilt and with more modern fabrics. You can get the book, templates and EQ7 for the pattern. There is a web site which is very active. |
