I teach quilting at a local senior center. anyway our walmart store is getting rid of the fabric dept. and I was wondering if anyone had a reasonably inexpensive fabric web site where they could purchase fabric? Thanks in advance

LucyInTheSky 05-05-2010 01:08 PM

Connecting Threads.com usually has good deals and is cheap

sharon b 05-05-2010 01:50 PM

Do you have a Joanns or Hancocks close by ? They run good sales if you keep an eye open

I agree.

I think Eleanor Burns(Quilt in a Day) has really beautiful fabrics and good prices on the sales. I have never been disappointed.

What about the thrift shops or putting an advertisment in the local shop looking for fabric. Poeple often want to declutter but like to see where their stuff will end up.

What is wrong with these fabric manufactures? I was in Sioux City, IA a couple of weeks agao and only fabrics, was 1 row at Walmart, Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I did find a lady at the goodwill that knew of a granny that sold fabric . She gave me directions and said she would be there if I came out, but I never did find her and I didn't have her phone number with me. We have 2 LQS in our town and a small amt of cotton at Walmart and Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Oh and a Hancock. Do the manufactures want people to not sew?

Its not the fabric manufacturers.... its the stores...
corporation Walmart has decided they do no make enough profits on fabric.

I was responsible for a service project a couple years ago, and after I talked to the manager at the local Joann's, she was very generous in giving the group extra discount coupons every week. You might want to ask.

patricej 05-05-2010 02:32 PM

step 1 is to set your per/yard price limit. i've noticed that there is a very wide range between individual members' definitions of the phrase "reasonably priced." what some consider reasonable i consider somewhere between highway robbery and downright obscene. they probably think i'm so cheap my skates won't roll. (they are right.)

step 2 is to go to fabshophop.com
even when there isn't an active hop going, you may find the list of shops that participated in the most recent online hop.

step 3 is to visit each and every one of those online shops.
when you search diligently you can and will find namebrand fabrics for as little as $2 per yard. (more often, though, between $3 and $4 per yard.)
don't be sucked in by the claims of "always 25% below retail", or other claims along those lines. the "retail" they refer to is usually in the neighborhood of $10 per yard. they are NOT offering you a deal. they are hoping you can't do basic math.
make a note of which have regular or clearance prices that are within your limit. you can build a list of favorite shops within your fabshophop member area. (as a backup, start a notebook. guess who has lost her list of favorite shops more than once because a computer got a case of the hiccups. )

when it's time to spend the $$$, start with your list. over time it will grow and your will save piles of money.

i'm off now to comfort my pennies. i've pinched them so hard and so often lately the poor things are bruised and boohooing.

Try www.craigslist.com and under crafts in your area.
Also freecycle in your area.
I saw baskets of good fabric at my local Goodwill recently

Janetlmt 05-05-2010 03:02 PM

Try fivebucksayard.com...they have fabric for 2.99

bj 05-05-2010 03:09 PM

Another good place is thousandsofbolts.

cjomomma 05-05-2010 04:18 PM

Try freecycle.org for a group in your area. make sure when you post that you explain what you need it for.

sandpat 05-05-2010 04:22 PM

I've seen lots of sites that have clearance sections where their fabric runs from $2.00 yrd. upwards. You can only beat that at yard sales/free cycle.... Good luck!

LOL, I have been accused of squeezing a nickel til the buffalo poops! One place I've always found bargains - although not a huge selection - is
http://www.5bucksayard.com/

dakotamaid 05-05-2010 04:55 PM

Another place is marshal dry goods:

Online try fabric.com Free shipping over $35, good quality, lots at 3.99/yard. WalMart is doing away with their fabric section because they have to have a person there to cut. The rest of the store just needs someone to stock the shelves. Only electronics and paint have people.

I go To The Sea To Breathe 05-05-2010 05:36 PM

Thqanks so much for all the suggestions, our Goodwill never has fabric, at least not when I have checked, and our salvation army has a little. I think I am the biggest contributor of fabric to both of those places, but I will sure check the other places out. Everytime I go in Wally world some one is complaining in the fabric department that all they have anymore is polar fleece. Even Hancock seems to be taking up more room in their store with furniture and lamps etc. Since I have joined this board most fabric has came from online, I did get a wonderful box of fabric from one of the members on this board. Already did one kids top and started another one and found a couple of more places that need quilts also. I am afraid my house has suffered, but who cares? It is so windy here lately that I think I may open the doors and windows and maybe all the crap will blow out and head east.LOL

littlehud 05-05-2010 07:22 PM

Connecting Threads is having some fabrics 50% off. That makes them a great price. Check it out.

Honey 05-05-2010 07:37 PM

Thousands of Bolts, Fabric.com are just 2 that come to mind.

ckcowl 05-05-2010 07:50 PM

fabric.com has great sales, $1.95 fabrics, and free shipping after $35 so pretty good place to shop, i've been buing fabric from them since before the became an on line shop...over 10 years and have had very good luck dealing with them, in all the years there have only been a couple errors, and they have fixed it right away with no problems

rabbit2b 05-06-2010 04:03 PM

I'll second the vote for thousandsofbolts.com. Prices, shipping, quality--all great!

And if you have an Alco's around, watch for their fabric sales. They have a range of quality, but the good stuff is very good (probably not current designs), and the sale price is $2.50 a yard. I've managed to buy an awful lot from them. Unfortunately, they're not in every state, and they seem to be in small towns where there's no WalMart.

Fabric.com is great. also try hancocks and joanns during holidays.

Honey 05-06-2010 05:44 PM

You might try Unique Fabrics and Gifts on ebay. I have bought a lot of batiks from her and they are beautiful. Only $4.95 a yard. I just ordered a bunch more. They are even more vibrant and gorgeous in person.

Norene B 05-07-2010 04:50 AM

I haven't been able to find the link for thousandofbolts.com. It just takes me to search engine.

jolo 05-07-2010 05:25 AM

try thousandsofboltsandonenut.com

Yes, I like to refer to Alco as Wal-Mart's country cousin. Some of their fabric is quilt-shop quality but not current lines of fabric. If you catch it on clearance, I've bought some for as low as 50 cents a yard. Some of their fabric is of such low quality that it's not worth buying, though. Just depends on what they have that day.

Norene B 05-07-2010 05:51 AM

That one didn't work either. If someone has the address saved, you can do a copy of the address, then paste in the reply section.

Honey 05-07-2010 06:03 AM

http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/ I tried this one and it worked.

bstanbro 05-07-2010 06:18 AM

I recently found lots of nice fabric at fabric.com at around $4 per yard. I've ordered from them many times and I've always been pleased with the results.

Norene B 05-07-2010 06:33 AM

Thank you. That worked for me too.

newbee 05-07-2010 06:42 AM

Z & S Fabrics has nice fabric at good prices, and the shipping costs are reasonable as well: www.zandsfabrics.com
One of my expert quilting friends orders from there quite often.

mocha827 05-07-2010 07:24 AM

fabric.com or thousands of bolts at http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/index.cfm

bev fry 05-07-2010 07:36 AM

the quilt site, thousands of bolts, sells most of their their fabric for $3.98 and $4.15 and a little higher. they have all the top manufacturers. I have not been disappointed with them.

quiltlin 05-07-2010 07:43 AM

Try "one thousand bolts and a one nut" Not sure of the exact title but if you but that in and then search you should be able to find it.

nwm50 05-07-2010 09:08 AM

Well Then...I better run to my WalMart and buy up frabrics?? But then again we have an local quilt shop, Joanne that sells materials. I could only afford WalMart right now and only brought a few yards so far.

Holice 05-07-2010 09:10 AM

where do you live

nwm50 05-07-2010 09:16 AM

Jacksonville, Fla...how about you 'in hiding' ?

blackbearbetty 05-07-2010 09:28 AM
