that is definitely worth having appraised. It certainly looks like patterns once offered in the newspapers and probably hand sewn. You have had this since 1988!!!according to your post....why so long without finishing or having it finished? Just curious...

Very pretty quilt top regardless of who made it.

Quilt Mom 10-06-2011 05:01 AM

Gorgeous top. The reference to the Kansas City Star paper sounds right to me. The colors fit the 30s, it seems. Must be a pretty old top.

moreland 10-06-2011 05:32 AM

Lovely quilt top -- finish and you will enjoy it a long time.
Or don't finish and hang it up as a top only. You'll still enjoy it.
Thanks for sharing.

LindaDeeter 10-06-2011 05:34 AM

Eleanor's pattern (pub. 1999) is based on the original Nancy Page Quilt Club patterns, very popular back in the 1920's-30's ... this vintage/antique top was made from the original NP pattern of that era :)

This is a very beautiful quilt.
You might want to check around at your local quilt guilds/LQS for an appraisor. There may be one not far away from you who can give you an idea of the age of the quilt.
There are more appraisors around than used to be.

I have had it since about 1988, don't know how long she had it. There is only one tiny spot that might need to be resewn.

It's beautiful.

Are you certain it is machine pieced?

No, it isn't machine pieced, it is all hand stitched. Since it is only the top, you can see on the back of it, too, and it is all hand done.

ktmo815 10-06-2011 12:52 PM

its lovely - are you going to finish it?

delma_paulk 10-06-2011 01:07 PM

What a wonderful family heirloom: Just think of how many precious hours this lady put into this quilt: Bless You for Saving it and Best of Everything when you get it finished: Blessings:

I would have to do it by machine, and that would not be good. I can't afford to have it hand quilted right now. I am thinking of hanging it and a beautiful cross stitched bedspread quilt I have that I no longer have a big bed to put the quilt on. Who needs walls, lol.

I was just noticing that altho the baskets are all the same, the way the flowers are made, each is different, stems, etc. I had only thought, briefly looking at before, that each flower head was different, but I see now that each is completely different.

The fact that some of the flowers are done in a color originally called 'hot pink', you may be able to date it from that. The technology to make that color is fairly recent. Good luck, and remember to post finished pictures. Lucky you!

This is sort of what I thought when I saw it. It looked like a pattern that I had seen before maybe one in a newspaper .

Iv'e got a recently handmade quilt of that same group of patterns, The ladies who made it said the patterns for the flower basket are very old. If that color is a soft, little bit grayish green, like feedsacks, it could have been made in the 30s-40s. Turquoise became popular in the 50s.

Diane on Summit 10-06-2011 11:05 PM

WOW! UFO's aren't just from our generation, eh? That is a real find - I love all the different flower styles!

teacherbailey 10-07-2011 02:21 AM

How gorgeous! I am not a basket-quilt lover, per se, but with all of the aqua and white....and the variances in the flowers and leaves, this is one of the most beautiful quilts I've ever seen!

Normacharlie 10-07-2011 07:13 AM

How beautiful! I bet the pattern came from Mountain Mist, in case you didn't know that was a batting that always had a pattern on the outside paper. I have a couple my aunt gave me.

My time 10-07-2011 05:04 PM

It sure is pretty and will be more so when finished.

AnnR 10-08-2011 04:47 AM

The quilt top is beautiful. Someone put a lot of work and love into it. I hope you will finish the quilt, then use and enjoy it.
