Thanks jstitch! I was looking for the link for the next round too.

I have the top purplemen sent. It belongs to TexasQuilt's.
I'm off to dream up something pretty to add.

margaret59 01-09-2009 04:02 PM

Hi Judy

I really like the border you have done on my quilt. The way you made hearts with the bias tape in the corner is very clever.

Thank you

Margaret

jstitch 01-10-2009 07:18 AM

Margaret, Im glad you like it.. I was trying to follow your desire for a "girly" quilt, and me being "not girly"... a challenge..lol

Here is a pic of the center Barsbus made. I received it in the mail last week from Calico92402. Now what should I do with it?

purplemem 01-12-2009 08:04 AM

Missi,
I posted a reply to you under the post International Round Robin, 4 groups full.
Please check that post.
Purple :D

and I got Judy's from Elle! :)

SulaBug 01-13-2009 12:14 AM

Missi, I love the center square that you have received. It's wonderful. I hope you find the perfect way to finish it.

I'm excited! I am waiting so I can go shopping at my LQS. Darn..I wanted to go this week...hurry hurry top!!! Hey...it does have wings on it doesn't it....maybe that will help it get here a little quicker.

sandpat 01-13-2009 06:15 AM

Ok..I have a couple of silly questions. I was reading the original requirements about the size of the borders. The original center was to be 24"...then the next was to add the 3" border..but it says 30" finished. Mine that were mailed are 27 1/2" (as I added only a the 3" border) ....Now, this next round is to be 33 or do we go to 42...see..when we add 6"..OOPs...which direction should we go?

And...when you are mailing your packages...are you adding insurance and if so...for how much? I'm learning the hard way that it can effect what our International friends have to pay to recieve the package (re: VAT) What are all of you doing for yours?

purplemem 01-13-2009 06:56 AM

Patti,
If you added a 3 inch border it would be 30 inches, as you added 6 total inches to 24 inches.

I insure mine for $100 when I mail it.

MJ...for this next round we are supposed to add 6"...so do you see what I am asking? Go back and read the original directions that you posted for Missi.

I love the red border. Thanks Calico2402. Can't wait to see the next round. I still have a little more to do on the one I am working on now. Hope to get it off in the mail by Friday.

SazuBMidlands 01-13-2009 08:56 AM

Patti,
You should have started with a 24 inch centre block (unfinished), and added a 3 inch border to each side.
24 (centre) + 3 (left border) + 3 (right border) would be 30 inches (unfinished).

The next round is to add 6 inches to each side, so 30 + 6 + 6 is 42 inches unfinished.

Or is the problem that the block you've been sent has only a 1.5 inch border each side, making it 27 inches? If that is the case you probably need to alert Judy for advice.

sandpat 01-13-2009 09:01 AM

DUH...DUH....banging my head on the wall..... Can you tell that I read that BEFORE I had my coffee this morning???? So sorry for the confusion...its just me

I really don't remember the measurement..but whatever it was..I'm sure it was right.

jstitch 01-13-2009 09:45 AM

MAILING ALERT!!!

For those of you mailing internationally, you need to be aware of a couple of things...

Customs forms must be filled out properly for the country you are mailing to.. we do not want to pay customs charges on any of these and are justified not to as we are not importing or exporting goods.. only trading services...

I usually mark mine "other"...not gift or merchandise, etc..
I usually mark the contents as "craft fabric"
Mark the package to be returned to the sender in the case that it cannot be delivered.. we dont want tops lost in international mailing bin somewhere..

Also the cost of the item must be considered.. If it is over $50 value, customs charges will be assessed at the receiving end.. I would suggest you estimate a value less than $50. How can we justify this? Well again, we are not importing or exporting goods...just exchanging value for value..

Insurance is another matter.. I think that the US Post Office defaults to $100 insurance without extra fees.. I am going to suggest that we all abide by that and NOT add extra insurance.. gets us back into the customs issue.. how can we value it less than $50 and insure it for more than $100... I would like to have your input on this, but to minumize the impact of chgs, I would like us all to use $50 as the basis for the value of all tops, and take the chance of losing $50 in coverage in the case of one of them getting damaged or lost...

I still dont know what to do about tracking internationally...Ill check on it today.. again.. but to track international adds a tremendous amount to the postage...

I am assuming that the customs form will serve as a tracking device for international packages, Ill check today...

Any other issues, please post them for the benefit of all...

And Im sorry that I didnt think to post this sooner.. before we had a problem..

The international girls might be able to help us out here as some of us are not used to this process. Try not to be judgemental when these things happen..but informative and helpful in finding a solution.

JANW 01-13-2009 09:46 AM

Also, you need the seam allowance and that will make it 30 1/2 " finished.

Thanks Janw,

but let me clarify something..

30 inches finished = 30 1/2 unfinshed...

The finished measurement is what it will be when in the completed quilt..
Add your seam allowances to get the unfinished measurement.. or the measurment that it will be when you send it on...

JANW 01-13-2009 09:51 AM

I meant finished and out the door for that round. I'm not sure what the finished unfinished distinction is at this point, but you can tell me.

babeegirl 01-13-2009 10:59 AM

shouldn't it be 24" center=24.5", add 3" borders (3.5" unfinshed)=30.5" because you always want to end up with the .5" seam allowance? oh yeah, before I forget, what's the next round after the first 3" border? I have the flu/virus today and I'm all fuzzy headed.

sandpat 01-13-2009 02:25 PM

Well...at least you have an excuse today. I'm just dunder headed...I got all confused on the measurements.. AND I messed up on my mailings to the UK...so....I'm hanging my head in shame..... :( :( :(

Oh yeah...the next border should be 6" finished according to the original instructions.

SazuBMidlands 01-13-2009 03:06 PM

Sorry. I meant to put finished, but actually put the wrong thing and seemed to cause more confusion. Many apologies.

Hi everyone. I helped out and made Missi's second row. This one will be going to Janw and is all set to mail on Tuesday.

Sorry about the photo the colors of course aren't perfect (I tried it with and without the flash) Tell me how do the fabric stores do it? ;)

sandpat 01-18-2009 04:30 PM

It looks very pretty Elizabeth!!! I love your addition and boy...you are quick!

Missi 01-19-2009 09:55 AM

I Love it!!! Great job Elizabeth

Elizabeth A. 01-19-2009 11:59 AM

Thanks ladies, I hate that the photo makes it look like I'm color handicapped though. :( Handicapped yes, color handicapped that's just not fair.

I did try to close the gap so this last center could catch up with the rest of you. :-)

sandpat 01-19-2009 04:40 PM

Well, I never considered you to be handicapped...(in any way!) OK...so we'll just try to be fair and say you are color blind...in only 1 eye    JK!!!!

I'd say you did a great job closing the gap!

I finially finished the first round of the Chinese Puzzle and will try to send it on it's way tomorrow or the next day. I kept looking at it for days and finially decided it needed to have a trellis and some vines on two sides.

That is really nice. Is the vine border applique?

mgrhs 01-20-2009 04:11 AM

looks great thanks Barbsbus

sandpat 01-20-2009 04:47 AM

Wow..that looks great Barb! I do like the trellis on the 2 sides only...adds some punch to it!

I embroder the leaves and flowers. Used French knots for the flowers and tried to make the vine weave inbetween the slats of the trellis. It was fun to do.

reneebobby 01-20-2009 10:16 AM

OKAY You ladies have all out done yourselves so far on these quilt tops. Now I'm wishing I had the time to have joined. Oh well, maybe next time. Keep up the wonderful work, and give yourselves a pat on the back for JOBS WELL DONE.

barbsbus 01-20-2009 12:11 PM

I sent mgrhs84's top to Calico92402 today. Now to start working on JANW's. I am going to keep looking at it and letting it give me a clue as to what to do..

Here's Sandpats centre with the first border (2 rows) - plain & simple I feel this is what was called for to prevent it from looking too busy.
Hope you approve Patti.
