Thank heaven you were both safe & your house didn't burn down!

Wow! I can't believe that they didn't want the entire iron. That is crazy. You'd think they'd want to see that iron.

I always unplug all of my sewing stuff - machines, irons, etc. When I'm not using them. It's a great habit to get in to. When I see pictures like this it makes me even happier that I started doing it.

Thanks to all of you wonderful board members, I have now started unplugging my iron every time I am done in my sewing room. I used to leave it plugged in all the time, but after reading a couple of the warnings members have posted, I now unplug it every time I leave the room and have the ironing board set up so that when I walk by the sewing room I can see the red light on the side of the iron and know at a glance it's still plugged in.

I agree. You never know what will happen. I always unplug irons, machines, and especially those coffeepots.

So happy no more damage was done.
When we moved to this house a friend that is an electrition
put in the outlets for us. He suggested we put the iron on the same as the light switch, whenever I leave I turn the light switch off and no electricity to the outlet where the iron is. I thank him in my mind everytime I switch off.

I either unplug everything or I have them plugged into a power strip with a surge protector.

So sorry you had this happen - glad it wasn't worse than what happened.

I have read many posts on this board about people who have had fires due to leaving irons plugged in. So, last week I went to Costco and purchased a heavy duty serge protector made by Belkin. Went home and plugged everything into the new one. I do however still unplug this all of the time when I leave the room due to thunder storms. This year we have been lacking in rain and storms, but still unplug.
