I am going to go out and get one. Thanks!

When I was growing up we had the 'built-in' ironing board that folded into a niche in the wall. It was wooden with a canvas cover, to which my mom added a piece of an old mattress pad and then covered with a piece of an old sheet.

It was much more stable than any of the free standing ones I've had since.

I now have one of the small 'over the door' ones that is also quite stable, but not really big enough.

I recently got a board from walmart--they call it the big board and it was 49.99 and I really like it :)

eimay 09-26-2010 08:18 AM

Thanks, Bellaboo. I'm going to go to Walmart later today.

Hello Chamby - There are many sites that I have come across that describe making ironing boards to fit over your own ironing board so that you can iron yardage more easily. Sounds like a great idea but my ironing board fits into
my kitchen closet and I am afraid of making the board to big and heavy for me to even want to drag it out.
One site is: http://www.angelfire.com/art3/elaine...shop/Iron.html
Others say that there is too much give in regular ironing boards and they create actual boards to iron on which they place on kitchen islands or counter tops.A site that describes how to make one of these cheaply is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uGVYK-VeNs

Good luck - I think I'll take a look at Costco - I don't like Walmart as much
because of their treatment of their employees, especially the females...

I have this ironing board also. Got it at Wal Mart. Doesn't wobble, and since I am in a wheel chair it lowers to the height I need, or if I want exercise, I stand on one leg and iron. So it's adjustable to whatever height you need. It is larger which I also like, but is a little heavy for me to manouver around, so I solve that, by leaving it up all the time.

I have one that I screwed to the back of the door. It comes down to the correct height so that I don't get a back - ache. A lot of those ironing boards are made for short people. The Iron flips up and down with a canti - lever action and is wider than an average board. In the process, the iron doesn't wobble off the board either. I don't know how you would solve the problem if you didn't have a closet door and needed to use an ordinary door that someone wanted to open up at the wrong time... I had a power point put in the closet as well, so that the iron can stay on the shelf with all the other stuff - starch etc - and I don't have to fiddle about getting stuff from elswhere.

I have a very old, large heavy ironing board that never wobbles, I think because it is just so sturdy. My son got it for $1 at a yard sale about 10 yrs ago, and I hope to never get another one!

I have a wide ironing board that I think that I bought originally at WM. Keep an eye out for replacement covers and buy one to keep on hand for when you need to change. I just found my extra and put it on and it looks so good! Made me happy! Love my big board.

I thought it was just something we have to accept. Good question and lots of good answers.

I found a sturdy board at the Salvation Army store--it is a l950's model--one of the early adjustable boards. It is heavier than the new ones, but it is a great board. It cost $2.50. My grandson attached an antique over-sized wood ironing board to it. I paid a lot more for the wood ironing board (no legs--they used to lay them across two chair backs)but it came from an antique store. I just like the idea of the old board and often wonder what else has been ironed on it in years past.

I have a Rowenta, or rather my husband does. He always ironed his shirts and is so picky that he searched for a good one. It is extra wide and really is nice. Sure glad he didn't find the Reliant or he would have had to have it. I do enjoy it too, and is really nice and flat, no indention in the middle.

i just bought one of those yesterday at Walmart!!

I am so glad you asked this question, because I have had the same problem. Mine also wobbles on carpet. I was going to put a heavier, bigger top on it but now I think I will go to Target for a new one.

Oh wow, I just love this. I will have to see if I can talk my DH into making one of these for me. If not I will just have to make it myself.

rosalia856 09-27-2010 06:19 AM

I had one like the picture. My hubby put a brace across the legs It helped but you could not take it down. I then remembered that I had my grandmother's . It was brought doing the late 50's and early 60's with PC couponds that were brought when you brought your groceries at Loblows. It is so well made. I then lucked out to get one that belonged to my girlfriends m-i-l It is really neat. You can use it as a square or fold the ends down to make a regular ironing board. I then found one for my quilting teacher at a yard sale for two dollars. I suggest you check out flea markets and auctions. Good luck

Hi,

I just bit the $$$ bullet and bought a Polder ironing board at Best Buy (used my 20% off coupon to bring the price down!). It is sturdy, extra wide, and doesn't wobble. There are several extra features: an iron holder, a cord clip, a shelf for ironed/ready to iron clothes, etc. and a long, long cord.

Gather up all those birthday, Christmas, and Mother's Day (and Father's Day too) gifts and do yourself a big favor. And no, I do
not get any commissions for the seller or the manufacturer (*grin*).

Back in the day, ironing boards used to have a much wider pipe bottom. We used to take off the caps and fill the pipe feet with sand and replace the end caps with a spot of glue.

I appreciate the tips for different boards which I will check out as my old board is almost beyond help but after 40 years I think I have had a wonderful board for my $20.!

zz-pd 09-27-2010 08:49 PM

my iron board is about 20 years old, and in bad shape, I was looking at Iron boards, but they are to expensive for me. God bless.,

np3 09-27-2010 08:59 PM

Mine wobbles too. Guess I'm going to check out this other design. I've tipped over my iron a time or two...

the wider apart the pairs of points are, the more stable the board will be.

And with the 4 point system, if it still wants to wobble, I've put a "shim" (my shim is a rubber slipper) under one foot and it becomes very steady. Like she said: wider feet:more stable.

Went to Bed,Bath,Beyond and purchased the store model (still pricey). Very nice. After he purchased me a new iron, he didn't want it to take a header any more than I did. It was the advice on this board that helped me make my decision. Many, Many thanks.

galvestonangel 09-28-2010 05:25 PM

Well my iron went out today. I think it was from being rocked off the board so many times. It was a Shark and I loved it. My back up is my Rowenta, which is heavier and doesn't seen to work as well as my Shark. So tomorrow I will be shopping for a new ironing board and iron.

eimay, you were wise to by the ironing board for your new iron.

eimay 09-28-2010 06:06 PM

Pack up your coupons. Maybe you can get both the iron and the board.

aorlflood 09-28-2010 06:34 PM

I found an old one in very good condition at the thrift store. It is VERY heavy metal! It has the 4-point feet instead of the bars like the one shown. It does not MOVE at all when you are using it! :)

I think I paid $5 for it!

$47 seems like a lot of $$$, but you get what you pay for! Sure you can get one for under $10 but why??????

chamby 09-29-2010 09:09 AM

Thanks for all of the advise. I did get a new one at Target. I paid $59 for it. But I just decided that I am tired of not having a decent ironing board. I just have to get used to the iron holder on the end. I also bought an additional pad to go it since the one on it was very thin. My next project is to make a square board to go on top of this for extra ironing space.

ladyshuffler 09-29-2010 08:06 PM

Wally World has both kinds mentioned here.
