Ironing Boards
 

I need a new ironing board (all-purpose, not just for quilting). Anyone have any recommendations? I bought a cheap one and it was a huge waste of money and time! Y'all like 4 legs? Would appreciate any help you can offer.

This might be a little out of your price range but this is what I made. It has an June Taylor ironing pad sitting on a piece of wood that sits on top of 2 Sterilite drawer units. It is working out great. My friend Jennifer, who is also a board member went home and order the drawers from Walmart and made herself one too. Good Luck !!

This looks great but...........I don't have the room for something like this and I also need an all purpose board. I have an old metal ironing board that works great. I don't know if you would say that it has four legs or not, two in the back and two that come together in the front (almost like a tripod). I just have trouble finding a cover that fits. Guess I'll just have to make my own cover. I like the narrow end for all ironing. I would love to have one like the above. Just no room. BrendaK

I would look at garage sales for an old Mary Proctor double flip, or a regular mary proctor. Those old boards from the 40's, 50's & 60's just can't be beat.
With the 4 legs, it sounds like the regular mary proctor. You can find covers for them, just google, however, it's easy to make one yourself.

I made a new top for mine when my old one wore out. It fits right on top of the old ironing board, is 55x15.5" and is perfect for pressing the entire width of fabric. I think it cost about $25 to make - ironing surface and pad!

I use my big board for ironing clothes as well as ironing fabric.

I know what you mean about the pointy end of the board for general purpose ironing. I have a standard metal one that is okay but primarily hangs on the wall. My DH used that as a template for making me a 1/2 to 3/4 length board that he then mounted to a closet door in my laundry room with a 'piano hinge'. He mounted a cut-down broom handle with a rubber end on a hinge at the skinny end to stabilize/level the board when unfolded/in use. I used a regular ironing board cover and just bunched up the excess length at the door end of the board. He made it out of particle board. It really does need to be re-done and/or I need to add a second cover as I'm getting little bits of the wood poking through sometimes. Not enough to be damaging to clothing though.

If I have just flat stuff to iron, I usually use my cutting table w/towels folded over which is where I do my quilting ironing as well.

Hi there ManiacQuilter2. How do you launder your June Taylor ironing pad? Mine badly needs cleaning and I'm not sure whether or not the washer/dryer route is the way to go. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Joyce in DE

I bought the $50 one at Walmart. It is very sturdy and extra wide. There is a shelf underneath it and iron holder on the end that come off if you don't want it. It has four separate legs. It is a very good all purpose ironing board. Now I have the best ironing board ever:

Do you have a sewing tracing wheel? It's perfect to roll a clean piece of fabric over the soiled ironing side. Roll the edge of the new fabric between the pad and the board with the wheel. Works like a charm and the fabric will not pull out until it's time to change it again.

Oops I thought you had the cutting/pressing mat from June Taylor. I have the Quilt in a Day canvas ironing mat and I wash it and put it back on the board wet so it will dry to fit.
