I bought a CD shelf last year at our local computer store, it is much smaller then the one at Ikea, but it is perfect for the fat quarters, it is the first thing I see when I walk into my sewing room, I always enjoy seeing all the colors,I have the different colors stacked together so I can see what I have available,
go for it and enjoy

Also, I find the MDF cannot handle the weight. The little clips pullout and the shelves warp, then collapse.

I have started to shop on Craigs List for used furniture to store fabrics- and other stuff- in.

I have been fortunate to find 3 "curios" of wood with glass doors to display and store so much of my "stuff". Each was well under $100.

MDF gases...will have to read more about that. I would think fat quarters/fabrics not to weigh as much as CD's/DVR's. Maybe someone has tried the cabinet and can give us some insight.

My husband built something similar to that but I have outgrown it. Mine is attached to the wall, but I think one that sits on the floor would be nice.

Where did you get your shelving Chele? Were they also at Ikea?
Yours look deeper than the cd width ones, so I was curious how deep the shelves are.

Love those shelves. I need a lot of room. I want to get the fabric out so I can see what I have.

Thanks for the inspiration. Work's just about to start on my loft extension to create my studio - this looks just the ticket.

They will!! They've had that particular shelving set fir at least the past three years, and it's featured in the 2011 catalog, which just came in the mail yesterday!!

I have a TON of fabric on my shelves (I'm embarrassed to admit that) and I haven't seen any problems. We're looking at getting another 5x5 cubbyhole for all if my scrapbook stuff.

I absolutely dream of getting a system put into place like this!! Will definitely have to get me some shelves, now! Also liked the idea of the CD shelves for fat quarters or thread!

Don't know where you are right now but there is one in Houston, Round Rock & Frisco. Don't know about your other 2 locations

mshawii 08-06-2010 03:03 PM

take some folded fat quarters and what ever else you are going to put in there and see how they fit, before you buy it. Just a thought to maybe make sure it is what you need.

That is very nice. God bless. penny

this shelf is actually 5 units. 3 wide and 2 narrow. the wide ones are the 'billy' shelves and they're great. you can get solid or glass doors for them. the doors, however, cost as much as, or more than, the shelves. i own the 'billy' ones for books with the glass doors to keep out dust and i love them. i don't know anything about the narrow ones, but they are probably the same. there is also a corner unit that matches this, as well as half-height ones. if you have an ikea near you, see them in person first. if you don't, ikea has an online catalogue where you can check out the door prices and sizes. they're not 'real wood' or anything. they're made of pressed wood stuff and have a laminate covering. i wish i had them on every wall in my basement. if you get them, i know you'll love them.

Wow! That's fantastic! I should show it to my husband. Some day when I get a sewing room, he could make me one.
