I have an almost empty room with just the long arm in it so I was looking at shelving and saw THIS! The narrow shelves are sized for CDs but wouldn't that just be great for stacking fat quarters? I could imagine each section filled with a different color.

Very nice! I could use several of those units but I'm out of room!

dkabasketlady 08-03-2010 03:52 PM

Hey Pam, I've gone to our local IKEA store a couple of times just to look at these bookcases. That's exactly what I thought about storing FQ's in them. I brought a catalog home with me to make the final decision. You can even get doors with or without glass to put on them to keep your fabric clean. I think for the money they're a great buy!!!

Jim's Gem 08-03-2010 04:03 PM

I have looked at those before too. I think it would make a nice cabinet for fabrics. Be careful to keep it out of direct sunlight!!!

Candace 08-03-2010 04:26 PM

I thought the same thing...those would be great, but get doors if you can.

franie 08-03-2010 04:27 PM

YES! Perfect. I used a CD shelf unit for a while for smaller pieces. Now I use it by my long arm and it holds thread and other stuff.

I LOVE IKEA!!! My boyfriend bought me a system for christmas last year to set up my "studio" -- They are the best. (He is too!)

craftybear 08-03-2010 04:53 PM

love the bookcases for your fabric

pittsburgpam 08-03-2010 05:00 PM

I really need to get organized. I'm feeling so cramped in my room and I know it would feel better if things weren't stacked badly and jumbled.

If I get that I would put it in my sewing room and move the cubbyholes into the long arm room. They would be better for batting and backings, etc. and these shelves would be better for fabric.

Friendly Quilter 08-03-2010 05:01 PM

I think that would work great.

Those shelves are the bomb! I didn't see those when we went to Ikea. I did get some inexpensive shelving. It's been so wonderful to have everything (well, almost!) out and ready to use. No more digging through tubs. Treat yourself. You and your fabric deserve it!

annette1952 08-03-2010 06:53 PM

Those are very cool shelves for the price. Sure could get organized with them

pittsburgpam 08-03-2010 07:46 PM

Love your shelves too and that cubby system is great.

I bet a pretty little jelly roll tied with a bow would fit right in those little CD spaces. **sigh** Decorating with fabric means something totally different to quilters.

DH and I were looking at Lowes today to see what my options are. I told him we needed to go to IKEA and he said wth driving and gas and food, I should just get the nice cabinet from Lowe's. Um, maybe. Love the cases but I need doors on mine cuz of the cats. Still looking. Yours are great.

pittsburgpam 08-03-2010 09:23 PM

The closest Ikea to me is about 45 minutes, I believe, and I would only drive it on a weekend. I keep the cat out of my sewing rooms, just can't deal with hair on my fabric.

mygirl66 08-04-2010 04:26 AM

$184.95? OMGosh! Good thing I was sitting down! I love the storage, but would rather have DH make it for me out of all the lunber in the garage!

mlaceruby 08-04-2010 04:35 AM

yep think it is a good hubby project!
saved the pic to show to him tonight!
It's a couple hour drive to the nearest IKEA

dotcomdtcm 08-04-2010 04:42 AM

Perfect! I hope to have a quilting studio by next summer. I will keep this in mind.

CarrieAnne 08-04-2010 04:54 AM

FQ's and the small packaged patterns. Great find!

What a great find! Wait until the furniture makers for quilters get a look at this....it'll cost 3 times as much.

Thanks for sharing.

NannieB 08-05-2010 04:41 AM

I love it great idea, need something like that to put all my stash on. Have it on utility shelves at the moment and it just seems to fall over when you are looking for a certain color of fabric.

Tinabodina 08-05-2010 05:21 AM

Very nice. I could use a couple of those.

Sewlmatesister 08-05-2010 05:25 AM

I have loads of the Billy Bookcases, I think I'm going to get a couple or three of those Benno DVD cases to add to them...great for the smaller cuts!!!

heather1949 08-05-2010 05:28 AM

I have mine stacked in 5 drawer plastic cupboards, they are great and being see through you can see your colors clearly.

Lbatescpa 08-05-2010 05:48 AM

I love IKEA for just about everyhting! I have a bookcase system from them that has a bookcase framework. You can purchase shelves or drawers ahta slide out. Mine is 7'6" or so. I love it because my fabric doesnt get dusty and I just slide out the drawer which is about 6" deep. There are also dividers that I use to keep my thread and other craft supplies like ribbons and beads organized. I will have toget my daughter to take a picture. It is so great to have in my tiny sewing room.

I also bought a table at Costco that is height adjustable for cutting.

cloudswinger 08-05-2010 05:51 AM

I like to check the as-is section of IKEA, a lot of times there are some great deals on cabinets and bookcases. One day I bought 5 kitchen cabinets for $10 each. They went in my laundry room. I would have bought more, but another woman scarfed up the other 5 cabinets! It definitely makes the 45 minute drive worth it.

ekbuckeye 08-05-2010 06:40 AM

Wish we had an Ikea closer, love to have this cabinet but it is not available online - Houston is over 4 hrs. away! I do have a small CD cab (21 cubbies about 7" w & h, 6" deep) perfect for FQs. Got it at WM for $20 a couple of years ago, went back the next week for another and they had quit carrying them! Haven't seen anything like it anywhere else.

Where did you get your shelves?

We live way out in the country and the nearest IKEA is a couple of hours away. So, when I'm looking for something there I just go online first and if I find something I really like, then I can justify the trip so that I can see them and touch them.

pasovasz 08-05-2010 09:28 AM

Ladies,

Some questions about the Ikea products:

If we use acid free paper to line shelves to protect fabrics, aren't you worried about the outgassing of the MDF used in the IKEA products?

Also, I find the MDF cannot handle the weight. The little clips pullout and the shelves warp, then collapse.

I have started to shop on Craigs List for used furniture to store fabrics- and other stuff- in.

I have been fortunate to find 3 "curios" of wood with glass doors to display and store so much of my "stuff". Each was well under $100.

Man I like that. What is the shipping on it gonna be?

pittsburgpam 08-05-2010 09:32 AM

I have a cubby hole shelving system from Ikea in my sewing room now and I've not had one problem with it. I also have one in my home office that is larger and it is FULL of books, and not one problem.

I find them to be sturdy and I don't line my shelves with paper anyway. Don't know about the "outgassing" so I couldn't say that I'm concerned about it. I've had them for about 5 years.

OOO, I want to come shop at your house. Well all the Ikea stores are 150 to 200 miles away so thats that. Oh well will try something else.

dotterbeck 08-05-2010 11:06 AM

LOVE THE DOGGY PLACEMATS WHERE CAN WE GET SOME OF THOSE CUTE APPLIQUES?

quiltstodo 08-05-2010 11:54 AM

Love the Billy just printed it to take with me. I have several items from ikea and haven't had any problems plus the way this is laid out each section wouldn't be holding that much weight.

Annz 08-05-2010 04:47 PM

Yea that looks like it would make a perfect cabinet for fabric. How deep is it?
