A while back I decided to buy some unbleached muslin to have on hand for backings, practicing FMQ, etc. Can't remember where I bought it but I do remember that the person who cut it did a lousy job of folding. Brought it home and it sat in my messy sewing room for quite a while before I got around to re-folding and putting it away. Well. . . tonight I went looking for that muslin and for the life of me I can't remember where I put it. Mind you it's not a small piece - about 8-10 yards as I recall. I even straightened up the sewing room (a little) and looked in all the usual places. Still can't find it. And my house is small so there aren't that many places for things to hide. It will be interesting to see where it turns up.

scrappycats 07-19-2010 10:22 PM

LOL! been there done that many times!

nana pat 07-19-2010 11:30 PM

Been there done that. As a matter of fACT TODAY i SPENT OVER AN HOUR LOOKING FOR MY EMBROIDERY FLOSS. i KNEW i HAD PUT THEM(THREE PLASTIC BOXES)in a shopping bag from JoAnns, they were no where to be found. Then I decided to look in my sewing box and low and behold, what did I find at the bottom? up, all three boxes. They had been under my nose the whole time. Yours will show up also.

CarrieAnne 07-20-2010 04:37 AM

Oh, that happens to me too! Once I looked for a piece of fabric for days....it was right on top of my dresser, practily in plain sight!

zennia 07-20-2010 04:42 AM

The more organized i try to be the worse I am at finding things. My house is neat as a pin but not my sewing room. For the life of me I cant keep that room neat.

sewgull 07-20-2010 05:09 AM

I if put thing in a neat order the I can never find anything. That's may story ane I sticking to it.

Dodee 07-20-2010 05:16 AM

We "lost" our son once - he was just beside us and then gone. We went all over the place - inside and out. Ooops, found him - in bed sound asleep.

Ditter43 07-20-2010 06:15 AM

Those darn gremlins are at it again!!!...They are constantly hiding things from me! Things turn up in the strangest places! :D :D

nativetexan 07-20-2010 06:20 AM

I tend to remember the next to the last place i put something!! sometimes it takes getting my hubby to help me look.

thismomquilts 07-20-2010 07:20 AM

Rest assured - it will be in the last place you look ;)

NCquilter 07-20-2010 07:32 AM

Happens to everyone. I usually have that trouble with Christmas gifts. I hide them and can't find the darn things when its time to wrap them. lol

clem55 07-20-2010 08:08 AM

everytime I organize things ! I guess my brain functions best in messy mode. The Xmas present thing really is me. Shopped early, for me, hid bags and boxes under a bed in the basement so the little ones wouldn"t find them, then weeks later I couldn"t!! I hid a couple toys so well one year, I never did find !! LOL

Beth33 07-20-2010 08:31 AM

I have a few yards of muslin missing, too.

Remember the old days when burglars only stole electronics and money and jewelry? LOL

Grama Lehr 07-20-2010 08:34 AM

Been there, done that.............many times!

jbud2 07-20-2010 09:17 AM

I can't find my hairdryer and brush I keep in my gym bag. My almost 3 granddaughter told me she threw them out. (I think I would have felt them in the plastic garbage bags!) I asked at the gym is they were in the lost and found - no. I cleaned under the bathroom vanity - it did need it! I bought a replacement but will keep looking, although I have this feeling someone is walking around with a 'new' old hairdryer!!

Same here. I knew exactly where that fabric was before I folded it and put it away.

That usually works for me as well. But I really don't want him poking around in my fabric stash. I try to keep my addiction hidden.

Burglars - that must be it! That's the only logical explanation.

QBeth 07-20-2010 12:07 PM

Sometimes I'm SO convinced that I know what the missing object looks like but, when it's found, it's slightly different from what I remembered. So, when I'm looking, my mind's "eye" doesn't see what is right in front of me. Any psychologists out there? There's got to be a name for this!!

Grinster 07-20-2010 12:09 PM

By the time I'm done organizing I am too tired to start the project. I spend more time looking for stuff than I spend sewing. Guess it is time to really get a system so I will remember where I put my stuff. This board is better than therapy. It is so good to hear this is not just me. LOL

ginnie6 07-20-2010 12:32 PM

I have spent a good part of my morning looking for some Sue blocks. I remember them being on my table in June.....now I cannot find them. I went thru my drawers, looked in my scrap box, my dresser drawers, everywhere I can think of. I found the scraps I had left from cutting her dresses but no blocks! I had them all laid out and pinned to the muslin blocks ready to be sewn. I am so frustrated with this! I hate not being able to find something when i want it!

Kas 07-20-2010 12:46 PM

Look in the linen closet. Maybe it got mistaken for a folded sheet?

amandasgramma 07-20-2010 01:32 PM

Are you related to Ginnie6???? http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-55417-1.htm

pojo 07-20-2010 03:23 PM

I'm glad I'm not the only one miss place things and can't find them.

littlehud 07-21-2010 07:06 AM

I do that all the time. I lost the fabric I bought for SIL bowling quilt. Of course I found it after I bought other fabric and finished the quilt. Now what am I going to do with it. Sigh. You are not alone.

Isn't that the way it always goes!

You guys are making me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one who does this.

Dodee

Once we discovered our youngest son (age 2) was missing from the living room and got all our friends involved scouring all over the neighborhood. With no luck after an hour, I decided to call the police. I went into my house to make the call, felt a little chilly, so opened the closet door to grab my lightweight jacket and found my son sound asleep in a cardboard box full of small toys we kept downstairs for the kids. We still laugh about it today, even though he just turned 40. Whenever he leaves the room, someone is bound to say, "Oh no, Scott is missing! Quick call the police...Oh wait...check to see if he's still asleep in the closet!"

annette1952 07-21-2010 06:05 PM

LOL! Glad I'm not the only one that does that!

Gwyn 07-21-2010 06:08 PM

I've done that so many times. The worst was when I lost the IRR top I was working on. I lost it twice.

Gwyn 07-21-2010 06:09 PM

I'll tell you how to find it. Go buy some more. It will show up like the run away child it is, not understanding why got some new when there was already so much to love. I'm not kidding

wvdek 07-21-2010 09:50 PM

I like Gwyn's suggestion.

PMY in QCA-IL 07-21-2010 09:54 PM

Right now I can't find a package of rotary cutter blades I bought last week. I know I brought them into my sewing room and put them in a safe place. TOO SAFE I guess!

Mickie612 07-22-2010 01:58 AM

10 YARDS OF FABRIC IS NOTHING, I'VE LOST A SERGER.

ckcowl 07-22-2010 04:03 AM

I sure knows how that goes, seems like the story of my life.
2 years ago i made an adorable locker-hooked snowman rug for my daughter who collects snowmen for christmas, of course around christmas time i could not find it anywhere, a whole year goes by another christmas approaching and still have not come across that dog-gone rug..i'm thinking someone walked off with it?!?....so, here we are in July of the 3rd year...and low and behold...I FOUND THE RUG!!!!YEA!!! we cleaned out the garage a week ago, and it was HOT so i did not go through some boxes in a cabnet out there figured i'd take them in one at a time and sort them in the evening...last night i carry in a box that has my son's name on it...hubby says, did you get that out of the rafters? (that's where Jeremy's stuff is stored) I tell him know, it was in that cabnet in the garage...going to see what's in it...well, along with the rug were other fabric scraps, a couple fabric bowls...a couple books...i guess for the past 2 1/2 years i never checked that box because it had Jeremy's name on it...that'll teach me...when i pack a box, change the writing on the box!!!

Linda1 07-22-2010 04:26 AM

I call it sometimers. I seem to do it a lot.

cowgirl 07-22-2010 04:31 AM

I can't find 3 yard of black fabric I bought at my LQS. It was the good satin finish. It is crazy!

humbird 07-22-2010 04:48 AM

It happens to me all the time. I just thought it was old age setting in. 9 times out of 10, when I do find the "mystery" object, I find I had been moving it around looking for it!! Now, that really must be old age!

Jo M 07-22-2010 04:53 AM

Well, it's reassuring to know there are others out there like me. I don't know how many times I've put something in a "logical" or "safe" place, but the minute I turn around it's right out of my head...hopefully to be found again someday. :D

MomtoBostonTerriers 07-22-2010 05:07 AM

Unlike most of our fellow message board readers, I'm not so sure the muslin will turn up. I think it went to that Great Warehouse For Lost Items, probably stored right next to the Ark of the Covenant. It's been 3 years since I last saw my big stack of photos I took of Arlington Cemetery right after 9-11. Probably in the Great Warehouse, too.
