After reading so many great posts on here in the last few days, I was fully inspired to get back to the quilt I've been working on for my nephew. I was "pumped." I sewed two strips to the sides, about 4' each, then had to take both of them out. So after about 5 minutes of sewing and 45 minutes of un-sewing, I felt so frustrated that I stopped and got back on the computer. Not that I'm complaining...

bjnicholson 10-31-2010 02:43 PM

Hey, welcome to the club! Wait until you unsew the same #@#$#% seam, not once or twice, but, threeeeee times!

wolph33 10-31-2010 02:51 PM

Shemjo 10-31-2010 03:00 PM

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting. There is a good deal of unsewing along with the sewing. Enjoy it all.

hannajo 10-31-2010 03:13 PM

Thanks for the kind words, everyone

OK, I'm going back in, and hopefully I won't be throwing anything this time. :D

RkayD 10-31-2010 03:13 PM

my grandma always said...Never start anything after noon Friday..It will never go together and never get finished. I have stuck to that and use my weekends for planning unless my project is already started. =)

mcdaniel023 10-31-2010 04:15 PM

I hear ya. I needed to finish a baby quilt. (Well, plan it, start it and finish it yesterday.) Finished it last night and threw it in the wash and dryer. Got up this morning and saw what I didn't see last night. The binding was soooooo bad, I cut it off and put on a new one before delivering it today. I learned a big lesson. Don't try to do the binding when sleepy and without my much needed glasses.

I had one of those days on Thursday. Mine is still laying on the table. I will get back to it tomorrow.

joan_quilts 10-31-2010 04:45 PM

Just walk away and take a breather is what I do. I get so frustrated sometimes when I keep making the same mistake. In the end, I get the project done and am usually pretty happy with it.

Dollysquiltingmom 10-31-2010 04:47 PM

Been there done that and have a lot of T shirts. LOL

Ditter43 10-31-2010 04:49 PM

Welcome from Florida!! I think we have all done it more than once!! At least I know I have!! :D

luv-e 10-31-2010 04:59 PM

Tomorrow is another day. Just walk away and go back refeshed.

Stitchnripper 10-31-2010 05:08 PM

Stitchnripper 10-31-2010 06:22 PM

I had to embrace it to enjoy quilting!

Quiltforme 10-31-2010 07:18 PM

The famous 2 step quilt dance, 2 strips forward 3 strips back!! Better to make the mistake and catch it then finish the quilt and scream! As some say grab a glass of wine and start again!!

FQ Stash Queen 10-31-2010 07:39 PM

Would you like to know how many different seam rippers I bought before I found the perfect one to quickly rip out those numerous "boo boos"? I bet I can find at least 6 without even really looking hard.

wvdek 10-31-2010 07:52 PM

Welcome to the club! You and your seam ripper will be BFF.

SuziC 11-01-2010 02:18 AM

We have all done that. At least on the computer you don't need a seam ripper

PEP 11-01-2010 02:23 AM

My 7th grade Home Economics teacher told us, "As you sew, so shall ye rip!" We have all been there and done that! Keep smiling and sewing!

"As you sew, so shall you rip" has been a motto of mine for a LONG TIME !!

SueDor 11-01-2010 04:12 AM

Been there, done that many mnay times.

christina bennett 11-01-2010 04:48 AM

Good Morning,
My rule is to get up and do something else. Give it time and go back to it. I have saved my un-sewing projects for when my husband says sit with me while he watches his shows.
Every one has those problems ,even the best quilters. For me I am sad to say but for a few years I had the title of best stitch remover. In a class some one would be struggling to un-do and I would do it for them all too quickly. I was good at that,I am not sure what that says about me.

I had to chuckle at this. I told a friend who I am attempting at designing and making a queen size quilt for him that I threw away his quilt the other day. I got mad at it and it didn't look good at all.

He's a good friend and after a slight paused said "threw it away? Well you're the quilter I guess it must have deserved it." I didn't tell him that I was able to retrieve it later since I didn't put anything on top of it and throwing it away meant throwing it away into my scrap pile. As if I would have actually thrown the fabric away away after paying that price for it!

Anyway, don't give up. One of these days you'll sew it how you like it sewn. Don't forget to threaten it with throwing it out. It worked wonders for me. :)

CGail 11-01-2010 05:33 AM

I can't complain today - yet. I finished a baby quilt last night and just now put it in the washer. It was a kit that my husband bought for me four years ago. It is really cute with appliqued airplanes and hearts. I used flannel for the backing and a pigma pen for the label. The applique, flannel, and pigma pen were all a first for me. I am hoping that it will come out fine after the wash and that I won't be complaining. - Cynthia

It seems I make the most mistakes when I am trying to hurry and finish something. Sometimes it is best to walk away and go back the next day or week or month and you see things differently.

lillybeck 11-01-2010 05:37 AM

I can totally relate to that.

sewmuchmore 11-01-2010 05:40 AM

I know just how you feel I have used my seam ripper so many time I call it Jack the ripper.

janb 11-01-2010 05:51 AM

Ripping is as much a part of quilting as sewing is. Just enjoy all of it....ripping is like a "sick day" taken from work - you always feel better when you go back!

ditto...

barboonie2 11-01-2010 06:23 AM

Yesterday I wanted to sew all day. But had to clean up from Halloween (our town celebrated it on Saturday night), clean the kitchen, vacuum, laundry, bathrooms, even straightened the garage and cleaned up the backyard for the winter....yuk, yuk, yuk. Finally in the late afternoon I snuck up to my sewing room....ahhhhhh.... Turned on some football, poured a glass of wine and away I went sewing! But by the time the World Series was on I should have quit! I sewed all the wrong pieces together so I spent the last few innings with a seam ripper! But, I did get a lot done on a new quilt before my brain faded. BTW Hannajo.....I have a daughter named Hannah Jo too!

twospoiledhuskies 11-01-2010 06:35 AM

Welcome to quilting!!! Fun, Fun, Fun (not) :-D

Quilting Grandma 11-01-2010 08:17 AM

Join the Crowd. I made a quilt for my quilt instructor, with her pattern and had to remove "5" borders because it didn't work. Takes about 4 hours to remove 5 borders.

When I get a photo will show it. It's beautiful, but very frustrating. I didn't quit for 2 weeks after.

inletjerry 11-01-2010 09:07 AM

Went through the same sew and unsew yesterday. Seemed like everything that I put under the needle, came out wrong. After many unsewing problems and many resewing, finally figured that it was time to stop, think, and rest. Unsewing usually means that I am not thinking, consentrating, and into much of a hurry! Today has been better, thank you.

mac 11-01-2010 10:47 AM

For some reason this reminds me of the time that I big stack of 3" strips to sew together. Since they were 44" wide it took a bit to sew one length together. But I was on a roll, just whipping those strips out. After working about 3 hours straight, I was feeling a little punchy. Decided to iron the strips open for a while. As I go to cut the threads in between the chain stitching, I realized that I had been sewing without bobbin thread for about 9 strips... as I said I was getting a little punch and all I could do was laugh at myself for sewing for long without thread. Well, at least I didn't have to rip anything out.

When I have days where I am reaping more than sewing--It's time to walk away.

Quilter Day-by-Day 11-01-2010 11:17 AM

Been there done that.LOL I've walked away plenty of times and then go back and it seems to work out much better.

Tweety2911 11-01-2010 12:27 PM

Had the same type of morning myself that is why I am here and thanks for the comfort of knowing I am not alone!

decky 11-01-2010 12:48 PM

Been there done that and what is funny it not only relates to sewing but other hobbies also. My husband likes to build model airplanes and is working on a plastic model right now. Well he was putting on the wings and the bottom ones are both for the left wing. He has sent an email to the company but has not heard anything back yet. He doesn't know what he is going to do. So we all have different kinds of problems.
