I agree a vintage singer or...what no one has suggested here, a 2010Q juki. At Raichert you can get one around $800 or so, and that is not too bad and it has a very large throat space. It is single stitch only, and no zig azg.
I myself have a 15-30 from my MIL, a recently acquired 15-91, and a recently acquired 301a. All these machines are in the process of being rehabilitated, so I have not sewn on them yet. I got these as I could not get a juki, no money for that for now. For zig zags, I have a singe 1022 and that machine does the zig zags. There was one of those on ebay recently for $50. |

also you can usually get a good buy on sewing machines at the big quilt shows

My machine died this week also. Very upsetting. Have to shop for a new machine. My husband is very supportive so that helps. Just sorry to have to replace my machine so I sympathise on your loss.

I am so sorry about your "sewing friend". If and when my Bernina goes, it may spell the end of my sewing career! I could more easily replace my husband than that machine...and he's NOT replaceable!
I had a Viking Mega Quilter on an Inspira frame for a short time and really liked the machine...the frame, not so much! It sounds like the machine might be just what you are looking for. It has a large throat space for a DSM and a built in thread cutter for both top and bottom threads. It was perfect for piecing, but I already had my Bernina for that. Otherwise I would have kept it. |
