does anyone else get stressed out when constructing the top of your quilt after completing all your blocks? I just finished piecing all the squares of my Irish Chain in the twin size which is the biggest quilt I've worked on so far and I felt buried underneath it. How am I ever going to make a king size? I'm scared to quilt it now. I haven't even put on the borders yet lol.

Everyone had a first time they did their first "big" top. It's no different than a lap quilt --- just more of it. Roll up your sleeves, take a deep breath, and dig in. Good luck, and please post pics of your finished quilt.

thanks for that. My son is waiting for it and my daughter is next in line so i think that makes me stress a bit cuz they are so excited about them I want them to be perfect LOL. Here is a pic of the top...

meemersmom 07-04-2011 11:37 PM

Very pretty. I can see why they're excited to get it. You'll do just fine.

Anael 07-04-2011 11:41 PM

Beautiful top! I don't make all the blocks first; I piece blocks and put them together when I have enough for one row. That way it kind of grows on me and at the same time I enjoy looking at the part that's done.
So don't get stressed, it's so much fun to put on the borders and quilt the whole thing :D Looking forward to pictures of the finished quilt!

Lindsey 07-04-2011 11:41 PM

Its turning out great.

hspirit_99 07-04-2011 11:46 PM

i think it is really pretty. i want to make one of these one day

everybody's mother 07-04-2011 11:55 PM

Realy pretty. Just do a bit at a time, then join it together if you can make that work. It is a way to not have all that to cope with from the beginning. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

fbs810 07-05-2011 12:02 AM

By the way don't forget to read the notes on another thread today. Her complaint was some wrinkles on the back. She got really good suggestions. And, yes, your quilt is lovely. Anxious to see it when it is done. I concur that doing a small bit each day is better than trying to do it all in one day. Good luck.

blueangel 07-05-2011 03:51 AM

You well do fine.

RenaB 07-05-2011 04:17 AM

Beautiful topper. My most stressful time is when I am cutting. I am terrible at it and will be glad when I get it perfected.

Jennifer22206 07-05-2011 04:18 AM

that's gorgeous so far!! When I made my first large top, I was really stressed out too. I think it comes from the feeling of "how am I going to fit all this top in that little space."

flowerjoy 07-05-2011 05:45 AM

That is beautiful... no wonder they are excited... and perfect is not always quite as interesting... besides the quilt was made by YOU for them... lots of love there.

Doreen 07-05-2011 05:55 AM

Don't stress. I don't make large quilts because I can't handle them. Lovely colors.

dunster 07-05-2011 07:06 AM

I had trouble quilting large quilts on the DSM until I learned to quilt in sections. Marti Michell's book explains several different methods.

dphelps 07-05-2011 07:35 AM

Don't stress. You have so far done a beautiful job, Take a day off and walk away from it. Maybe if you have a day of distraction, you can hit it again with renewed enthusiasm. Not to worry. You can do it!

thats a really good idea! Do you do that with Irish chain too? I think this one might be hard to do that with cuz I had to make all the red/blue squares 1st because there were so many steps to making those I did them all then moved onto the white blocks. whew it sure is alot of orginization being a quilter huh? LOL

thank you! I'm using Eleanor Burn's book "Irish Chain in a Day" and its wonderful. Its all strip piecing so it goes faster and she shows how to organize the whole thing it makes it easier.

natalieg 07-05-2011 07:46 AM

Very nice-think of the relief and good feelings you will have when you get the borders on! Then you will know that you can conquer bed-size quilts without an issue!

maryel 07-05-2011 09:39 AM

My, what a pretty quilt it is turning out to be! You will do just fine, keep at it and little by little it will be done. Can't wait for you to post it completed. :-D

susie-susie-susie 07-05-2011 05:36 PM

Pretty quilt. The colors really pop. No wonder they are impatient and want you to hurry up!!
Sue

jitkaau 07-06-2011 03:03 AM

No - it's fun. That's why I do it. It is actually relaxing for me.

sandyo 07-06-2011 03:05 AM

Remember you are making a wonderful quilt with love not a perfect quilt

thenonnielady 07-06-2011 03:07 AM

I have one of those sitting in the closet right now, same kind. After all the little square construction, I just couldn't face any more. It has been calling my name, lately, and I think I can get back to it soon.....it's only been 3 years.....

PrettyCurious 07-06-2011 03:08 AM

Very nice!
You'll be fine!

Dolphyngyrl 07-06-2011 03:55 AM

only get stressed out if I have to rip out a huge seam, or multiple seams in paper piecing because it didn't fold right. I think pp really stresses me out because you have to line up the pieces just right

Sadiemae 07-06-2011 05:18 AM

Every quilt!

there is your first problem...you want them to be PERFECT!
Who knows what perfect really is???
Is your son/daughter going to inspect that quilt and say "oh mom...look, these corners don't quit match"??/ I hardly think they would notice....ever....so calm down...put your love in it and trust that love will make it perfect for them!

grannypat7925 07-06-2011 07:21 AM

That can be quite daunting at first, but hand in there, it does get better! You will develop your own rhythm.

KarenS 07-06-2011 07:26 AM

It's beautiful!! As others have said, just take a deep breath and dig in. Try to enjoy the process. Be sure to post a pic of your finished quilt!

Homemother 07-06-2011 08:28 AM

LOL! I think this is a great question. I am so stressed when I put my blocks together because I think of how hard it is to get them straight, will the quilt pucker if it's not perfect, and my mind goes on and on. Once I get going, I'm better, but I stress down to the last stitch. The blocks are fun to do, though! I think I should work on wholecloth so I have less stress, but there are so many pretty patterns to put together!!!

butterflies5518 07-06-2011 10:16 AM

Beautiful quilt! Please show and tell when finished.

Tweety2911 07-06-2011 11:57 AM

The top is beautiful! Everyone had a "first", the more you do the better you get at it. Relax!!! Lots of great tips here. Good Luck:-)

BrendaK 07-06-2011 01:08 PM

:D You know what makes it perfect. YOU making them their own quilt. They are not the junior quilt police. They will have something that is made with love by their mother. You have done great so far. Take a deep breath and just think what your son's face will look like when you are done. We are all behind you cheering.BrendaK

IBQUILTIN 07-06-2011 01:12 PM

So far, you've done very well, just jump in there with both feet and get wet. You'll be surprised how easy it is after you are finished and take a look at it.

luce321 07-06-2011 02:55 PM

Awesome job!

bearly quilting 07-06-2011 05:19 PM

Beautiful top--you've done a great job so far, I know it will be gorgeous when completed!

lscho4jm 07-06-2011 05:23 PM

Lovely!

donnalynett 07-06-2011 06:19 PM

I don't stress until it is time for the binding. Binding is a downfall for me.

Patti Sue 07-06-2011 06:23 PM

Nice work, you are doing fine!
