Itty Bitty pinwheel help please......
1 Attachment(s)
Below is my Itty Bitty pinwheel top. It is 10 1/2 x 10 1/4-why would it be square!! I have backing/binding fabric for it. I don't know whether to just cut a piece of batting and layer the 3 together and bind it. I don't want to try and quilt it as there are so many seams.
Oh, and why did I make it? I wanted to see if I could. This is my first pinwheel! Suggestions please.... Thanks |
First, it's really cute. If your going to use it as a wall hanging, I would use fusible batting and maybe do hand quilting instead of machine. You could always sew decorative buttons in the center of each pinwheel and that would serve as your quilting.

what an adorable quilt. i kinda like the button idea that joyce gave
Thanks ladies for the complements! It was a kit from Quilts Plus out of Indianapolis, IN. Sad I know, but I don't as of yet have stash. I've just gotten back into quilting and I really wanted to try this.
I kinda like the button idea too. So, to do that I'd use fusible batting, then sew on the buttons, then the back/binding? OR do I piece it altogether, then sew on the buttons? Would I use floss to sew on the buttons? TIA- |
you need to put the back on when you make the (sandwich)- as in top, batting, backing---then add your buttons---like a tied quilt---they would substitute for quilting-then binding.
the fusable batting is fusable on both sides- adheres to top & backing- binding is the last step. and from the picture it sure doesn't look square- but that is probably from the angle of the picture- it looks as if it is 9 or 10 across & the same top to bottom- so that would make it pretty square. very cute! i love the fabrics. |
Ya, it isn't square it is off by 1/4 inch. I will probably trim it. The angle I took the picture at didn't help it not look square but I didn't want to stand on top of it to take the photo.
Thanks---off to check my button stash! |
I like your words "wanted to see if I could make it".
That is the reason I make lots of things...........to see if I can do it. |
Beautiful :)
I really like it!! If you didn't want to use it for a wall hanging it would make an adorable doll quilt for some little girl.
Great job!
It's adorable.
Ohh......doll quilt would be good! Now to put it away with other saved things!
Thanks again ladies~~ |
It looks nice!
Great job! :thumbup::thumbup:

which twister template/plastic ruler thingy did you use?
I really is cute !!!! |
Since it is small I might tie it to the back. Go thru the back into the cross seams and tie it. This will secure it and avoid having to quilt it. Catch the cross seams and not go thru to the top. I havwe done this and it worked very well.
Glad to see you made this little twister, you did a great job ! I have this pattern and I will make it someday, looks like patience to me ! Let's see, pattern says finished size is 10" so that must make the pinwheels about an 1" sq.. LOL I think you should just do the fmq meander or stippling stitch. The pattern says they used smoke monofilament thread & stippling. Or maybe it could be tied and dmc cut short.
That is really cute. Now that you know you can do it will you make a larger one?
Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels is the name of the pattern. It was a kit that I got from Quilts Plus. The template is about 2" square. I say "about" as I don't have it in front of me.
Quilting.....the back of this little top is nothing but seams. I'm afraid to try and sew on it as I feel as thought I'll break a few needles trying to get thru all the layers. You could easily use a larger pinwheel template and create this pattern. I don't think I'd use this one again. I'd use the 5" template or maybe even the 10" one. Thanks again ladies your kind words are appreciated! |
That's beautiful! I love the button idea!!

Tying it to back side or scattering buttons over the front sounds like a great idea.
It is beautiful, just keep making quilts or table runners. You seem to have the hang of piecing. |
Very cute. Perhaps some pressing will square it up. Spray starch on the back, press on the front. I have a piece of fabric I have marked with lines for blocks that I pin on the ironing surface and square up things that are slightly twisted. Works great most of the time.

Precious! I like the button idea
AHEM! Trim square, Bind, hand quilt and enjoy, its very nice!:)
This is so cute - love the colors and fabric patterns.
Ginger, I have made one and am currently making another. I did a decorative stitch....kind of like a little flower at each pinwheel intersection for the quilting....am going to do the same with this one.....aren't they fun????? Really like "potato chips"! I am not telling the truth....mine is the little bit larger one....10x121/2" but I've ordered the smaller one......
I really love this quilt, very bright colors and the buttons would be a great idea. You did a wonderful job on it.
A really cute quilt. Button idea is a great one.
Good for you trying something new! I am one who likes to stay in my comfort zone but have been trying to venture outside of it. I really like the fabrics you chose. The button idea is great! Please send another picture when you get it finished. :)
Very nice. I also like the idea of the buttons instead of quilting the whole thing.
It is fabulous. I would't worry about the 1/4". I can't see it from where I sit!:D

beautiful job your hooked now
Girl, you should be proud of yourself! Remember, not everyone can quilt - and look you did a beautiful piece!
Wow. Tedious work. Excellent job! I also like Joyce's button idea.
repress some seams on the shorter sides. that should help it give a bit more.
