Your sons quilt is really wonderful, I am sure his friend will love a dragon quilt no matterhow you make it.

I agree with Orangeroom. I would only use one of the panels--that way you will have 2 left to make 2 more friends a quilt too. lol Only half kidding you know what happened with the pillowcases.

I am going to using one panel and keeping he other two, in case someone else turns up needing a quilt. Maybe put some square blocks around it to make it larger.
Your Son's quilt looks great.

I only have 1 in mine!" Also, I'd make this next one just a smidge bit easier than the one you made for your son.

Maybe only MY children are the jealous type...

I agree too. Don't make the friend's with more of the special fabric than your own child's--not if there is a possibility that your own child will see it, anyway.

I really must agree with justflyingin ! Been there done that !

I was going to say the same thing as orangeroom. Make it simpler. I didn't think of it in terms of the jealousy factor, but in terms of simplicity because it sounds like the dragon itself is the coolest part to them. Maybe ask your son for his input. If he liked his quilt that much, I bet he might like help designing the one for his buddy.

Since there is a big difference in size, I would stagger the panels and use the black around them followed by red and white flying geese (maybe the 3D ones made with just one seam?) a black border or simple block or piano border. Your son can probably give his suggestions as you show each step so he is a part of the precess.

Love the quilt that you made. Using all 3 panels staggered would be very nice and there wouldn't be a lot left to fill. Maybe use the same idea only use the 3 panels instead. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I have to tell you that I am so impressed with your idea of fussy-cut from a regular piece of fabric to end up with one panel for a quilt. I never would have thought of doing that. I normally look for panels and if what I want is not there, I give up. Good for you!

Keep it simple so the dragons are the focus. jmho
