I understand doing that for when you are in the center of the quilt surface, but when you're quilting off the edge, why wouldn't you just tie the knot and leave it to be under the binding? It seems to me that my mistake was that I should have tied the knot while I was still on the very edge of the quilt top instead of sewing into the backing and batting that would need to be cut away. But I am a somewhat new quilter and appreciate learning the best way to do things.

how about going in from the binding about a qtr to half inch and put another quilting stutch around the edge?

How about a drop of fray check after clipping them?

Have you tried Fraycheck? At Walmart in the sewing section, it comes in a plastic bottle. Put it on the back. It will catch the threads.

I would pick out the row of stitches that are coming loose and re-sew them using a hand-quilting knot on both ends that is buried in the batting of the quilt. Knots on the back of a quilt look awful and can come untied if the quilt is used and washed.

Oh so sorry for your plight! I too agree with dunster but I know that's going to feel almost like starting over. Good luck!

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you, but there have been several good suggestions that I'm going to file away for future reference. I'm sure I'll need it some day. Good luck.

Yes, there have been a lot of good suggestions. I'm in the middle of sewing on the binding now, and when I finish I will figure out a combination of the various suggestions given. I can't tell you how great it is to have this community of quilters that is always so ready to help in so many ways.
