I think the 'time capsule' idea is awesome. Personally have not done any quilt as you go but can't think of a reason not to... beyond the wearing in the center that someone else mentioned. But if you have good quality fabrics to start, I think you should be fine.

Definitely, you can do this. My son (age 36) still has his. It started out as a trip around the world crib-size, and the extra wide borders made it a twin. I think he has it in the trunk of his car, so it's not in the best shape, but it certainly did the job when he was a kid!

That concept would work well if the main part of the quilt is only for looking at and not using over the years.

Great idea, if you can get the quilt back to work on. I have found that the quilts I give are either used constantly or not at all. As long as it isn't a drag around quilt, it's a pretty neat idea, thanks.

You could look up how “potholder quilts” are done, and use that method to add to it as the child grows .If each new piece addresses newer interests of the child as he/she grows, it will become a memory quilt of their childhood. What a neat idea diamondee. It could even follow them to college or further.

I'd just make a new quilt.
