I've lost a block. How can this happen?
1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone ever lost an entire block? Doesn't it have to be somewhere?
I'm making a Smith Mountain Morning as practice for my Bonnie Hunter upcoming class. It consists of 28 star blocks and 28 chimney blocks. I get down to the point of the last chimney blocks and it is no where to be found. This pic shows 4 blocks missing, but three were laying on the sewing machine. I've looked everywhere...no block. Fortunately I have gobbs of fabric left. And you know I will have to make another one before I find that one. Yes, I am taking the class in about a month, but this is my M.O. If I am to take a class I make a couple ahead of the class so I know what I'm doing. This is my second Smith Mountain Morning. I put the blue and brown one in a sale and it sold. If you have lost a block like me, and you found it, where did you find it? |
yes that has happened to me but can't remember where I found it LOL And I want to say how gorgeous your quilt it the colors are perfect
This may sound silly but I could see myself sewing 2 blocks as one and realizing it later- they stick together. Beautiful quilt.
Your quilt is beautiful... it’s hard to imagine that you actually need a class - you’ve already nailed it, girl!
As for the missing block. Been there done that! Places they “hide”... folded up with backing or batting, in a pile with another project, and i’ve even had one go home with another quilter who sat near me at an all day workshop! 😊 And yes - you could make a replacement block, but you know you’re gonna find the original block once you do! Good luck finding that block. Again, it’s a beautiful quilt! |
I 'found' one of mine sitting on the stool below the island bar because I set it there when I needed to clear off the island.
Just a thought. . . did you miscount when you made them? I've done that before and had to pull out the fabric to make one more.
Do you have a cat?
you might have two together some where. that is what happen to me once
Yes, I have lost a block. I have a deep sewing table made out of an old library table. I keep my roll of batting beneath the table. I have had not just one block but blocks slide off the back side of the table behind that roll of batting. Love your Smith Mountain morning. That's on my to do list.
Yes, indeed, I've lost anything and everything that could get lost, including blocks. Did you put it in your purse to take to the quilt store to match fabric? Fold it up with leftover yardage by mistake? Stick in a magazine? Ironing table? Under the machine table? stuck to your shirt? In the potato chip bag? (Okay, that one might be far-fetched, but we lost the remote for 3 days, and didn't find it till the next time hubby wanted chips. Voila! Now, no matter what's lost we ask, "Have you checked in the chip bag?" LOL).
Ha! I see your one block and raise you one whole lap quilt top! I’ve looked everywhere I think it could be for a month. Lovely blocks!
Could it have dropped behind your machine? Am teaching a neighbor how to make a simple quilt and we were missing some sections of her blocks. Found they had slipped behind the machine.
Love your quilt!! Beautiful. And yes. I spend a lot of time looking for things. But I don't actually lose things. I just can't find them. I actually have a list of things I can't find. It's there. Right in front of your eyes. I usually check every room in the house, in case I took it somewhere. But most often I find things right in my sewing room. On the floor, under a pile of scraps. On the bookshelf. Etc. Don't make another one.
My dog has not been to your house! Swear!
Beautiful work! The "lost" block will make a great label when you find it.
I lost a block when I was using my front deck to lay the blocks out to rearrange. A strange little twister came in and twirled a few blocks straight up in the air. I grabbed at them and thought I had them all, but later that day my neighbour knocked on the door and said he thought he had something of mine....weird....one of my blocks had swirled down into his fishpond. I wrote on the quilt block...... "Twisted & Turned...She thought I was gone.... I turned up in the neighbour's pond! " |
garbage can? With the scraps? I’ve had several go that route
Did you count wrong?
yep, look on your quilting board. I bet there are two stuck together. Let us know. lol
Most of the time it's my fault. But my husband has selective hearing. So when my computer is dying and I say "I don't care about anything except the quilting directory" he saves everything except the quilting directory... Or when we were getting ready for a visit from his mom, I told him I didn't want the rejected blocks from my cat block swap to go to the storage unit. I wasn't alarmed at first that I couldn't find them, I wanted to use them in the back of the quilt. But time went on. And on. And finally I finished the top and so immediately after finishing it we closed out the storage locker and guess where that stack of blocks was?
So that's the trick. Make a replacement block and then turn around and the missing one will fall on your head. |

I pinned the block to my curtain above my sewing machine...when I put the quilt together I couldn't find the block. I made a new block and later looked up and BOOM, there was my missing block!!! Haha!

I had a block held for ransom by some “friends “. Payment was 2 non consecutive 1 dollar bills. I have some wicked friends.
Yes, that is my avatar; Bootsie the tuxedo Maine Coon. She was sitting there, but she does not play with fabric. Good thought. I think that is why we keep pets, so we can blame them.
So now I've made the missing block again and I am going through the quilt sewing the rows together. So far no extra block. I put the potato chip bag on top of the frig. I only had that on the first floor.
I did lose two ink cartridges once for several months. Then on a trip to the freezer in the garage, I spied a bag that didn't look quite right. Yep! There were the ink cartridges controlled by the temperature. |
I lost a block. I have a piece cut out of my sewing table where my sewing machine fits in so it sits flush with my table. I had taken my sewing machine to a class and then next time I took my machine out, I found the block stuck down under there.

I don't have any ideas that haven't already been mentioned - just wanted to tell you I think your quilt is gorgeous.
Too bad you couldn't make another one out a coordinating fabric and call the quilt " Odd man out".
Somebody was hungry and took a bite out of your delicious quilt! It is beautiful. Hope you find that rogue block. Maybe she joined another quilt party...
Yes, I've lost a block before, but I have always found it eventually. My question is, why make the quilts before the class? My brain can't wrap itself around that. I do understand that the fun of a Bonnie Hunter is, well, Bonnie Hunter. And sometimes it is easier to have fun in a class if you already know what you're doing, so I could see making a block or two before class. But routinely making a couple of full quilts before taking a class? You are taking over achievement to its limit. And your quilt on the design wall is gorgeous!

Thanks Dunster. It's not just quilting. If I were taking Mycology one semester, I would audit the class the year before. If I learn anything in class it will be from her correcting me on better ways to do it.
I cut the whole thing on the Accuquilt. I ready take Parkinsons medication and I have sliced off a large portion, which did not get sewn back on, of my left index finger. Besides, the second time I do it, it seems to sink in better. I've taken everyone's advice and folded all the fabric again. But when I looked through the trash I realized that I had taken out the bag that an been in there and replaced it with a fresh bag, about a day before the count on the blocks went haywire. So I either threw it out or miscounted. |

I did lose one once. It seems it fell into my trash can that sat beside my sewing table. I tossed it out without knowing it. It was just a square, but not enough of the fabric was left to replace it, so I sewed a couple of pieces of it together and finished it.
Yes, now I check the trash before dumping it. |
I've had them "stolen" ....my dog used to grab one block, or one piece of a block, take it to her bed and just lay on it! She never chewed anything, just kept them!
The quilt is beautiful! I hope you find the block because losing things really is irritating unless you blame it on the cat!
Last year on my Talkin' Turkey! Sooo frustrating. It wasn't that it was hard to make another, but when you've sewn a zillion little pieces and think you're at the finish line...
Your quilt is absolutely wonderful! I have those colors in my Finger Lakes Equinox (aka Celtic Solstice) - which is no where near done. We are getting closer to the mystery and I shouldn't do it, I should work on some of my UFO's. But I can almost guarantee that I'll be doing it, lol. Please be sure to post another picture when this is quilted, I'd love to see it finished! |

Thanks to everyone for your comments. The block has been replaced and the quilt is almost together. We are in the middle of this big rain event. Had 5.29 inches just yesterday. The sun is still not up and I can't see if any trees are down or what.
I have genetic Hemochromatosis from an Irish grandfather and so I don't sleep well. I get up and sew. |
After searching for several months for the "perfect" sewing table, I finally found a desk at IKEA that worked perfectly: right size, storage compartment, small drawer above that, larger drawer above the knee space. I got it put together without any difficulty and put my machine to work immediately.
I managed to misplace a quilt block I had been working on. I searched behind the desk, on the ironing board, in the basket of scraps beside the desk, all to no avail. I don't know what made me look, but I took a peek inside the desk at the back, and there was the missing block lying in the tray designed to carry the machine cords. The block had slid off the surface of the desk at the back and somehow managed to land in the cord tray! To be fair, I have to say that other pieces of fabric have also landed there since. I guess I'm going to have to tape a piece of paper -- or something -- over that opening. I'm getting too old to have to crawl under the sewing desk if I am missing a block. |
The best way for me to find something I am looking for, is to stop looking. It usually finds me, usually in a place I already looked for it, and in plain sight.
I've found mine somehow stuck to another block.
