For this machine, you would need a frame to use the stitch regulator. Bernina makes several models, with a stitch regulator and can be used with or without a frame. The Bernina models use an optical unit to determine fabric movement. The regulator for this machine uses mechanical units (wheels) to determine movement.

I have one on a Bernina frame, and though I love the machine, it works well one this frame, and it's better than a machine w/ a regular size throat, but you will end up with only about 7" of sewing space. If your budget allows you to go to a larger machine I suggest you do that.

Didn't your machine come with a stitch regulator? Mine did - is there another stitch regulator that I need?

I have this machine and absolutly love it, I also let my 25 year old quilt on it and she won't use any thing else. Keep it oiled and cleaned - you won't have any problems.
