Janome or Juki?

I have a Janome 6500MC which I love and have worked almost to death. I want to buy either the Janome 1600P QC or the Juki 2010Q because I want something a little more industrial for straight stitching and fast FMQ. Both are in my price range. I'd like to hear your experiences and/or advice about either of these machines. Thanks!

I have the Janome 1600 QC and it is fabulous - I have a frame for it to quilt with as well as piecing. I also used it last fall to stitch a tarp to cover our boat - the tarp needed to be shaped a little. The machine handled it fine. I've used it to sew leather on cuffs of a barn coat. I recently used it to sew velcro onto bags for a snowmobile. My husband thinks a sewing machine can do anything, and since he helps make things for me and my quilting, I try and fix/make what he asks.
I can't speak personally to the Juki, but I have heard lots of positive comments from others about them.

I have the Juki TL 2010Q and love it. It is a real workhorse, and I really like the speed control feature as it would go way to fast for me. Easy to use and gives a great stitch.

I also have the Janome 1600P. FYI, the Brother 1500s is essentially the same machine. The Janome has a speed control, the Brother doesn't. The Brother has an auto needle threader, the Janome doesn't. I really like the needle threader, and I can control the speed with the foot pedal, so I prefer the Brother. Hope this helps.

p.s. What's the "QC" for? Mine is a "DB" which means it takes round needles.

I agree. I love my Juki. I've never been a Janome fan. One of the issues is that Janome has really dubious marketing strategies is Sweden. They try to stop dealers from other EU-countries to sell to Swedish customers. And they are doing this in a way that has caught the attention of the authorities. It's not legal to hinder competition in this way within the EU.

However, it has so far not been possible to prove legally, even though I know several people (including myself) who has the information in writing from retailers. It might not have anything to do with your decision, but I like fair trade. Sorry if I was OT.

I have Janome and juki machines. Have you looked at the all whistle and bell juki . They have a larger throat about same as ju k???
I have used these and they can bomb along or go slow. Only thing I ant do is use the needle threader no idea why . Friend who has the juki w and b says does everything but make a drink.

I recently purchased a Janome 12000 floor model. So you know I paid a pretty penny for it. As a whole I am not impressed with Janome dealers. The machines are probably pretty comparable these days. So I'd say stay clear of Janome for that reason. Janome is all about bait and switch, false advertising and all about what they can sell you. You get the machine that you think will do one thing. They don't tell you it won't, they just avoid answering, then after the sale, say "oh you're going to need another software pkg".

i think Jukis are FANTASTIC!

Not ALL Janome dealers treat their customers this way. Sorry yours does. There are incompetent machine dealers...and more terrific ones! Any brands....any place.

I called my dealer two days prior to Black Friday, told her I wanted to buy the janome 9900 -CASH DEAL, no trade, what is your bottom price? So happy! LOVE LOVE my janomes.

I have looked at the Janome's and the Juki's to the point, that I can't remember model numbers. The only thing I remember is one has a wide throat but not the throat height of the other. Can't remember which was higher but it might make a difference.

I have used & worn out several Janome sewing machines over the years. I've never had any problems with any of them & I sew almost everyday, some days many hours @ a time. I always clean the lent after each project or every other day & take it in for a through cleaning, adjusting & etc. every 6 - 12 months. The one thing I love about the Janome is the needle & bobbin tension stays & doesn't change on it's own.

I have the Janome 6500 and the Juki TL. My Juki sews rings around my Janome. It doesn't have all the fancy stitches, but if you want a heavy duty straight stitch machine that has a wonderful stitch and quilts beautifully, then this is the machine for you.

Jingle 01-08-2014 07:01 AM

I have a Juki TL98Qe and I love it. Keep it oiled and clean and it will just keep sewing. Straight stitch only is all I do, so don't need fancy stitches.

Dolphyngyrl 01-08-2014 08:49 PM

I think juki is a more popular straight stitch, haven't heard much about the janome one, but everyone that has the SS jukis seem to adore them

AngeliaNR 01-08-2014 08:55 PM

I love my Juki! She is the 2010Q.

I have the Juki 2000 which is very similar to the 2010. I didn't feel the need for the extra bucks for what the 2010 offered. I absolutely adore my Juki. I use it all the time. I actually cringe when I have to take out my much more expensive Janome machine when I need a free arm or something other than straight stitch. You can't go wrong with it.

I'm not sure if you found a dealer to buy one but I do recommend Ken's in Muscle Shoals, AL. They're super nice to deal with and have really really good prices - and usually free shipping in the States.

I think you'd love the Juki. I swear by mine. I've posted a few times the list of things I bought for mine - 1/4" guide foot, binder attachment, etc. Love my Juki :D

p.s. What's the "QC" for? Mine is a "DB" which means it takes round needles.

Mine (QC) has a needle threader and a thread cutter. It also has the slide control for speed. I am not sure if that is what makes it the 1600P QC (I forgot the "P" in the model when I posted before). This model is now retired per Janome website. It also came with a knee lift lever, but as I bought mine used, that didn't make it into the box!

I'm just beginning quilting!! I'm very excited to get started... but am a bit confused as to which machine to purchase. I seem to be leaning toward the Janome 7700. Am wondering what the difference is between that and the the Horizon? My sweet hubby wants me to buy a great machine right from the get go! I would be grateful for any and all suggestions to start my journey!! Thanks so much!!

Boonedox 01-11-2014 11:03 AM

I went to test drive the Janome feeling confident that I would buy it, but I wasn't sold. So after reading about the Juki 2010 on here I drove out to test drive that one. For me there was no question the Juki was for me. It felt more solid, the thread didn't break, you can easily drop the feed dogs, it has the thread cutter on the foot pedal, no tension issues, SOLD! I want a frame for it now. It only goes straight but that's what I wanted it for, just a simple reliable beast of a machine. Good luck to you, enjoy the search.

Boonedox 01-11-2014 11:06 AM

Where did you get your binder attachment, Santa said he couldn't find one.

I think you'd love the Juki. I swear by mine. I've posted a few times the list of things I bought for mine - 1/4" guide foot, binder attachment, etc. Love my Juki :D[/QUOTE]

Thanks to everyone who weighed in. I bought the Juki TL2010q this morning. I finished a quilt this afternoon with it and it is fabulous.

AngeliaNR 01-11-2014 08:22 PM

Congratulations! I absolutely love mine!

Late to the party but have to say that several months ago, I sold my lovely Janome 7700 to purchase a Juki 2010q and have never looked back. It sews like a dream :) The stitches are gorgeous. It's mechanical, not computerized, so there're no concerns of failing circuitry and planned obsolescence. I love the threader and foot control thread trimmer. I purchased it primarily for walking foot straight stitch quilting but love it so much that it's replaced my vintage Bernina 1130 in piecing since it's so easy to get an accurate scant 1/4" seam using the compensating foot.
I have it in the Arrow table original Gidget 2 that I initially purchased for my 7700 Horizon. Although it comes w an extension table, I had a custom acrylic insert made to accommodate the presser foot knee lift. That, too, was worth every penny.
There is not a Juki dealer in my area so I purchased it from "icanhelpsew", an authorized Juki dealer w storefront and eBay seller whom I would highly recommend. The price was fantastic, it was first quality in unopened box, came w extras, and the customer service was outstanding.
