Jelly Roll Race quilt top is done!

It has taken me several days due to my surgery, but the first of two tops are done! I just love these colors! I am thinking either a green or orange for backing with brown binding, what do ya'll think?

Sounds good to me. Your top is really pretty, would love to see it all finished.

momto5 02-03-2012 05:14 PM

It is very pretty! I would use the orange for the backing and the brown, as you said, for the binding. Be sure to show us when you're finished!

lfstamper 02-03-2012 05:14 PM

Great job! Love the colors.

tngal22 02-03-2012 05:15 PM

Thanks! It was my first Jelly Roll quilt. It is for my daughter's teachers as an appreciation for all they have done for her.

auntpiggylpn 02-03-2012 05:18 PM

Is that a Moda "Chrysallis" jelly roll? I love the colors!

I would have jumped at it too at that price!!! I love that fabric line and many of the others that Moda has out right now! I am so obsessed with the "Ruby" collection. It has reds, pinks, greens, aquas, blues. Looks very vintage!

tngal22 02-03-2012 05:23 PM

Love the Ruby line too! I think Moda is my new fav! I am going to use their Hometown by Sweetwater for my Mom's quilt.

auntpiggylpn 02-03-2012 05:27 PM

Have you seen the "Terrain" collection? Pinks and oranges and purples, oh my!!! I made a baby quilt for one of my instructors out of the Terrain collection and I have a baby quilt for a classmate that I am finishing up the quilting made out of the Ruby line. My favorite LQS carries mostly Moda so I have been a recent convert!!!

tngal22 02-03-2012 05:30 PM

Haven't seen it! My LQS doesn't have a huge selection of fabric, :( , but do carry some Moda. I plan to go there next week to look for backing.

hsquiltingmom 02-03-2012 06:00 PM

I just found 2 or 3 jelly roll quilt books at my library. I look at them and dream of all the things I want to make.

tngal22 02-03-2012 06:02 PM

This is super easy. Hardest part is making sure you don't get the strips tangled up so you have a knot at the end. Once you get the strips sewn together like a big binding, it goes pretty quickly. I am making another one using the same fabric line. Can't wait to see how different they look.

dunster 02-03-2012 06:53 PM

I love it! I have a jelly roll that I bought just for that purpose, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Yours looks great.

tngal22 02-03-2012 06:58 PM

Thanks! I can't wait to start the second one but it will probably be Tuesday since we are having company this weekend. Will post it when it is done.

MaryStoaks 02-03-2012 07:10 PM

Your quilt is lovely! I do like the the strippy ones and yours has such nice colors. Please post a picture when it's done.

I Love it! I made my first ever table runner last week and it is in the same colors, but I didn't use a jelly roll. I am new to quilting and it is only the second thing I have done. I need to expand and try the jelly rolls. I have not seen them in the stores I have been in, I have got to find a local quilting shop. There is only one I know of in town and I need to stop in there.

KR 02-04-2012 06:23 AM

How fun! Looks like your quilt inspector likes it, too!

DianneK 02-04-2012 07:32 AM

aren't these the most fun quilts to do!? I have done 4 so far, but cut my strips from scraps...all for Linus

gramarraine 02-04-2012 07:35 AM

Very nice. I have the jelly rolls but haven't starter mine yet.

Mariposa 02-04-2012 08:31 AM

Nicely done! I need to get busy and try one of these!

tngal22 02-04-2012 09:28 AM

Thanks. And yes my inspector liked it so much she got made when I made her get off. Guess I need to make her one too. Lol

zennia 02-04-2012 10:29 AM

I love your quilt. Love the colors.

BLAP 02-04-2012 01:37 PM

I think it sounds wonderful.

Love your colors. I "collect" jelly rolls when they are on sale and use this idea when I need a quick gift or for charity quilts. I don't always angle the strips though, making it a little faster going together. Also, I sometimes cut a 2 1/2" strip from each side of the completed top and use those strips in the backing for some added interest.

dahlshouse 02-05-2012 05:39 AM

This looks great... background and binding sounds perfect...

Mazda 02-05-2012 05:41 AM

Very pretty!

But, what is my cat doing at your house???

JenelTX 02-05-2012 05:42 AM

It's so fun! Thanks for posting the picture. I think a brown binding would look perfect with this top.

tngal22 02-05-2012 06:03 AM

Thanks everyone! I can't wait to finish it, but time has been limited lately. And this weekend we have had company.

lol...Um she has been here for almost 8 years. ;) That is my baby Larry. Hubby found her when she was maybe 4 weeks old and covered in fleas. She has came a long way in 8 years.

piepatch 02-05-2012 06:16 AM

Very pretty! Something I would like to make!

GailG 02-05-2012 06:32 AM

Please review the "jelly roll" concept for me: How many strips? And what are the dimensions of the finished "race" quilt?

MaryLane 02-05-2012 07:00 AM

Nice quilt.

If you use a full jelly roll there are 42 strips. The finished quilt ends up being approximately 50" x 64".

I have mad the calculations for using 20 or 24 strips. When you get down to around 120", you cut it into three equal pieces and end up with a baby or lap size quilt of around 48" x 30" I think.

Here is a link to the one I just finished up and added borders to.

amizjeanne 02-05-2012 07:29 AM

Very pretty. I think you are on the right track - brown binding sounds good to me and orange on the back will make it easy to find (if it is lost, that is:-))

wildyard 02-05-2012 08:06 AM

Love your quilt. I think I would do the aqua for the backing, but then that's one of my favorite colors! :D The brown binding is perfect in my opinion, and I think if it were me, I'd have to run an aqua or brown border around the outside just to frame it.

wildyard 02-05-2012 08:11 AM

MaryLane, your quilt is beautiful. Those colors look like a wonderful sunrise or sunset!

Krystyna 02-05-2012 08:15 AM

How cute! And your inspector seems to approve, too. Hope you are on the way to a speedy recovery.

hpbandy 02-05-2012 10:09 AM

Its Beautiful, how big is ? Are you going to put any borders on it ?
