I need a finished quilt in three days. I have a jelly roll all sewn in one strip for another jelly roll race pattern. I am going stitch long strips of batting in while I sew. Then sew across to make a squares. Will it work, I don't know but I'm going to try. See you in a few hours.

alikat110 07-15-2011 01:56 PM

Best of luck

BellaBoo 07-15-2011 02:10 PM

Think before speaking.... I have to have two jelly roll strips ready to sew before it will work. I will be cutting strips from one color fabric for the backing and sewing them together. If I'm thinking right, I'll just have to sew the batting and backing one time? I have a vision it will work but if it will, is a guess.

sherriequilts 07-15-2011 02:19 PM

Good luck with that
Sounds interesting
Can't wait to see it
Happy quilting

I believe you're on the right track...saw one quilted like this on Fons/Porter, only they used a serger...waiting to see your outcome ~ :D

noveltyjunkie 07-15-2011 03:52 PM

Oh this is exciting!!! please post pics (PPP)

jaciqltznok 07-15-2011 04:30 PM

in the time it will take you cut ALL those strips you could have the top done and basted for quilting!
just saying...

cjsparks 07-15-2011 04:36 PM

I think it would be neat to piece the top, sandwich, then quilt on the diagonal....kind of like you would criss-cross going through a nine-patch. Maybe in a 2 inch pattern

crafty_linda_b 07-15-2011 04:38 PM

I agree with Jaci..I think it will take you longer to cut the pieces...sew the top then quilt it with a stitch in the ditch and call it done...crafty_linda_b

unless she is using a jelly roll that is already cut,:)

Its what I ordered my first jelly roll for, the Jelly roll race.

her jelly roll is cut, but the backing and batting are not...do you know how long it will take to wrangle the batting to cut it into accurate 2" strips?

JUNEC 07-15-2011 05:05 PM

What is a jelly roll race quilt??

blueangel 07-15-2011 05:34 PM

Cutting the batting wasn't a problem. I had a roll of king size batting so just used a ruler and rotary cut 2 inch strips from the folded batting giving me long strips. I cut the 2 1/2 inch strips for the backing using my Go die cut. I only sewed a few strips end to end to see how it would work. I sewed a backing strip with the top strip with the batting on the outside. I used this padded strip as the original strip. So far it's working. My camera battery is dead so I'll post pictures if it works for a large size as I keep folding.
I decided to use the rag die and just make a rag quilt for the quilt I need for Tuesday. I have it all cut, just need to sew the squares to each other.

bluteddi 07-15-2011 07:00 PM

I see no reason it would not work...... I can't wait to see the pics!!!

When I need a quick quilt to donate for a charity auction or something that comes up unexpectedly, I make a pattern called Big Star by Country Threads. It is a throw size that can be pieced in about 3 hours and can be on my quilting machine tomorrow. I have made 8 or 9 of them in various color combination, but alway in flannels. They have all turned out quite cute.

Another go to pattern that I like to use when I need something fast is a pattern called Charming Log Cabin by Threaded Pear that they advertise as a 4 hour quilt. It is basically one large log cabin type block that is quite nice and can be made with the top and bottom borders scalloped if you wish.

It is really cute- just looked it up...

Good idea ... though I think I would use a solid back and one continuous piece of batting, then just use your Jelly Roll strip and strip quilt it as you add on.

fireworkslover 07-16-2011 03:39 AM

I made placemats in a similar way. I'm not sure if cutting/handling such long pieces of batting will make the whole process shorter tho. I'd think it might be faster to just sew the top and backing and then layer with one piece of batting, but...?

char7439 07-16-2011 04:02 AM

I made several little quilts with strips. First I spray baste my backing & bating together, then draw a line on the edge from side to side and up the side to keep the strips even. lay the first strip inside the line, the next strip on top right sides together and sew through the 2 strips, bating and backing. press the top strip to side, and add another strip on it.Us a walking foot. when done all that is needed is the binding.this will be a horizontal pieced quilt.

egranger3809 07-16-2011 04:04 AM

If you want to make a quilt as you go I would suggest making it by the block, then the row with borders added as you go. I teach this method at quilt shops. I can send the information to you if you supply your email address to me at [email protected] I made all the blocks for a quilt in one day then connected blocks, rows etc. the next day. Then the binding. No matter the pattern, the method is the same. With strips you can sew the block as you go and it is quilted.

I made a jelly roll race quilt a couple weeks ago in one day, quilting included. I used flannel strips and fleece backing. If you look in the postings for "My flannel strippy, scrappy, quilt in one day, with fleece backing quilt" you will see it. I think your seams are going to be bulky and then need something to cover the raw edges; unless I am thinking wrong. I would rather cut batting in one large piece and add it rather that wrestle long strips and backing strips. Wrestling the jelly roll strips to stay untwisted was hard enough. Just my opinion.

That's the way I would do it also. The Misouri Star Quilt Company has a tutorial on how to Quilt as you go that way.

Carol W 07-16-2011 04:46 AM

I would love to see the pic of your quilt when finished.

LindaDeeter 07-16-2011 05:27 AM

Sounds like you are going to do a quilt as you go ... right? We want to see when you're done! You're gonna have SO MUCH fun!

mimee4 07-16-2011 06:09 AM

I, too, would love to see the completed quilt. Sounds fast and pretty.

Does she have to cut the batting into strips too???

Please share photos when you are done.

craftilady14071 07-16-2011 08:30 AM

let me know if it works. Sounds like a great idea especially for a beginner quilter like me.

bmarchwick 07-16-2011 08:32 AM

I think I have one in my sewing room. I will try to take a picture and post it. I like to have one made up and ready to donate.

As I am reading this thread I am thinking the same thing...why is the batting being cut into 2" strips....I would do it the same way as QuiltE suggests...you could even put the strips on diagonally as someone else suggested for a different kind of look.

I agree. It sounds to me like you're planning a QAYG and they take more time.

BrendaY 07-16-2011 10:28 AM

I just wanna see the pics of completed quilt... fascinating ideas....

JanieH 07-16-2011 11:01 AM

I hope you will post pictures. I just bought a jelly roll to do this quilt.

justme CA 07-16-2011 01:22 PM

I want to know too. Help, please.

EdieClay 07-16-2011 01:27 PM

Well, what a novel idea. I can't wait to hear how it turned out. Guess this is a lesson for us to keep at least one quilt that you would be willing to give a way if it was needed. As soon as I make one, I give it away or use it. I am going to put one back this year.

kwiltnutt 07-16-2011 02:30 PM

What is the jelly roll race pattern? Please?
