I noticed that our local JoAnn Fabric store didn't really have much in the way of Christmas fabrics this year.

Then, I was at a Christmas dinner party yesterday, and heard that JoAnn Fabrics is being bought out by another company. If that comes to pass, I certainly hope the results will be "bigger 'n better".

Anyone heard anything about this? And whether you did or didn't hear, did you find many Christmas fabrics at JoAnn's this year?

tigger5464 12-25-2010 03:09 AM

I saw another thread on the board that JoAnns is being bought out. As for Christmas fabrics....not so much. What they did have was all on sale and I got a few but there weren't a lot. Was in 2 different ones and the "super" JoAnns had more than the other tiny one did.

117becca 12-25-2010 04:24 AM

also make sure you're looking in july/aug for probably the largest selection. It's probably something that doesn't get replaced, so as Christmas gets closer, the selection gets smaller.

Mattee 12-25-2010 06:34 AM

I agree. I saw tons during the summer.

CarrieAnne 12-25-2010 06:35 AM

Yep, ours had LOTS in Aug. and hardly any now!

QuiltMania 12-25-2010 07:21 AM

You'll find tons of Christmas fabrics in July and Auguts. They're usually a season ahead. That's when you'll start seeing a lot of Halloween fabric as well. Look for the Easter, St. Patrick's and Valentine's day stuff to come out in the next few weeks.

Lilyized 12-25-2010 07:30 AM

The JoAnns by my house had a lot of Christmas fabric and it was all 50% off the last few weeks. I too heard they are being bought out and I've never heard of the company acquiring them. Let's all cross our fingers in hopes they do get bigger and better.

Evelynquilts 12-25-2010 07:33 AM

yes, saw it on the news...was bought out...

amma 12-25-2010 10:04 AM

Fabric is put out months before the holidays... I guess we are supposed to get a jump start on the holidays LOL :D:D:D

I am keeping a very open mind over the sale of Joanns

My JoAnn's had a nice assortment of Christmas fabric, but nothing that called my name. I did get some "snowman" fabric (panel) in Oct which I used for placemats. I don't need anymore Christmas fabric anyway... too much in my stash already.

skeetersmom 12-25-2010 11:40 AM

Yeppers! But I want Christmas fabric NOW for NEXT Christmas, because I'm extremely slow. Besides that, I want it on sale. Really cheap. lol.

Brendat0426 12-25-2010 12:35 PM

I just looked it up and they are bring bought out by Leonard Green??? That company is also buying out other companies. Id did not say anything as to a change in the name or closing stores.

Emjay 12-25-2010 01:43 PM

Haven't heard anything about a buy out. Both JoAnn stores I visited in the past weeks (in Ohio and No. Carolina) did not have a great inventory, nor much I liked.

Emjay 12-25-2010 01:44 PM

I did not see a lot in the Summer at all.

jojosnana 12-25-2010 01:49 PM

Yup, its true. I don't know if we should be happy or sad., but either way we have no control so we learn to accept. sometimes with tears.

katied772 12-25-2010 03:35 PM

Our local Joannes, which is a large one, seems to be getting less and less fabrics in general and more crafty stuff.

Cassews 12-25-2010 06:25 PM

Our Jo-Ann's In Grand Junction, CO went out of business in November, we were told the lease was too expensive in the mall and they would be back in another location soon.
WELL let's hope this buyout will bring them back as many many people did depend on Jo-Ann's from the outlying areas as well as in Grand Junction proper.
The Grand Junction wal mart has cleared out one whole section of fabric, and the other wal mart has a tiny area for the fabric.
So who knows ?

Cyn 12-25-2010 07:59 PM

It seems like it's a wait and see thing.

Emjay 12-26-2010 12:02 AM

thanks. Had tears tonite.

ckcowl 12-26-2010 03:20 AM

fabrics are released at least 6 months ahead of any (due/season time)...if the christmas fabric hit the stores in December no one would have time to make anything...so winter/holiday fabrics hit in june/july. by christmas the stores should be about out of any...if they had a decent year and sold out. if their prices or quality are not very appealing they may have lots available left. but usually there are not holiday fabrics that are (re-order-able) in november/december...by then the summer florals are hitting the stores.

girlsfour 12-26-2010 04:38 AM

Are you near a Hancock Fabrics? They had quite a few this year..... Just an fyi - they do accept competitor coupons as long as you have their preferred card.

Really, I never noticed Chirstmas fabric in our stores in the summer time. I will have to pay attention. I want to make a new Christmas table runner for next year. Oops already planning for next year.

jgriinke 12-26-2010 06:27 AM

Being 75 miles away from JoAnn's, I did my Christmas fabric shopping online. Got shorted one yard. I emailed them and had to send the one yard I got back. I had ordered 2 yards and only got 1. Anyway, I wanted the 1 yard and was told I had to send it back. Then, heard nothing............I finally emailed and said to just refund my CC. I got a message back telling me they already did. If I hadn't asked about it, I wouldn't have known. I wasn't real happy, but at least I did get a refund.

You are correct, JoAnns always has more Christmas fabric in June/July and then it is gone by Thanksgiving. Getting us started on our projects early....with me I might buy the fabric in June....and then can't find it in the fall when I want to start a project. LOL

jemcnutt 12-26-2010 06:37 AM

I'm in withdrawal. Good news - our local very small and old Joanns is being moved and upgraded to a Super Store - I can't wait! Bad News - the old store is not accepting any more stock shipments and the new store won't open for 2 months! Trying to keep calm and not panic!!

Nolee 12-26-2010 07:26 AM

Yes, they are being bought out by an acquisitions company which normally has no interest in the business except for profit. I mentioned on the other list that this is what has happened with KMart acquiring Sears too. We spoke to the repairman on his last appointment before he retired and he said this does nothing for the employee or their benefits; as a matter of fact it usually is harmful to them. We can only hope it would be different this time but the track record isn't good.

Maybe one of the new owner's wives quilts??????????

Now if I could just schedule my mind to think that way, I would be ready for anything.! :-)

That is soooooooooo cute.

I thought Joann Fabric online orders came from a central location

fancifrock 12-26-2010 11:09 AM

Christmas fabric came to Joanns in July. Really not a good selection. Sure hope the new owners improve on the seasonal materials. Here in S FL the selection was very slim. Have several stores (Joann's) in the area but really nothing that would have inspired me. Did notice that the Valentine and Easter fabrics are out but the same old ones they have had for several years. MAYBE new owners will improve

Pat P 12-26-2010 11:16 AM

One Christmas item as well aas other holidays that is hard to find is the preprinted vests that are sold in 1 yd lots. I have made about 40 of these with lots of little details. This must be the reason Joanns doesn't carry them anymore.

GypsyRse1 12-26-2010 11:16 AM

I just left the Joann's after Christmas 70% off Christmas fabric sale... I spent $202 and got so many wonderful prints for around $3 yd plus I had a 20% total purchase coupon on top of that... I'm in heaven... (also red tagged fabric for 1/2 off the sale price plus the 20% too.... WOO HOO happy dancin at my house. My sales slip says I saved $528

MillieU 12-26-2010 12:30 PM

JoAnn's Fabrics was bought for $1.6 billion dollars by a private equity firm, Leonard Green & Partners. Their shares of stock went from $15.25 to $60.87. What's that tell you.

Nolee 12-26-2010 12:37 PM

One Jo-Ann was loaded with Christmas fabric and the other was sickly, at best. I have purchased all of my Christmas fabric there and online and tomorrow will go see the sale at my local quilt shop. Then I hope to begin stash busting.

Drew 12-26-2010 01:53 PM

I want to JoAnn's to get Christmas fabric for next year. Maybe six bolts were left. Nothing I wanted. I, agree, you have to purchase when it's Christmas in July!!

I, certainly, hope with the buy out that JoAnn's fabric selection will be better and bigger. With our Walmart store no longer stocking fabric, it's slim pickings. I was told at LQS that fabric will be going up to at least 70 cents more per yard in January.

Drew 12-26-2010 02:01 PM

Love your placemats!! What a great find!!

G'ma Kay 12-26-2010 04:19 PM

I worry that the buyout may close our smaller store.

You shop like me!

donnalynett 12-26-2010 05:56 PM

Our local JoAnn's still has a great selection of Christmas fabric. I have noticed something odd though.....when some of you on the Eastern side of the US were talking about a sale at JoAnns, I went to ours and no sale here. You would think they would all be the same. We just have a small store and for awhile it did seem like there were more crafts than fabrics but they have been stocking the fabrics again.

moonwolf47 12-26-2010 06:18 PM

Joann was almost right at my back door. They moved further away so can't get there as often. Didn't have so much in Christmas fabric last month. Miss them being close. Now will have to make a list before going lol Bad for them, because name any given day and I could spend $$$ there. Good for me, I suppose now I can "think" before impulse buying.
