Joann's was crazy!

I just couldn't resist the flannels at $1.49 a yard and headed to my local Joann's. The good news is that they had plenty of flannel for the sale. The bad news is that the store was so crowded had to stand in line for an hour and a half just to get the flannel cut.

Of course had to get other quilting goodies while I was there...lol...but everything was on sale. I spent $26 and SAVED $92!!! wow! I think it was worth the wait. Had a blast chatting and laughing with the other ladies in line, too.

It is the only "black friday" I go for...

Did anyone else go to Joann's?

indymta 11-25-2011 01:34 PM

I have been to Joann's on Black Friday and said never again. I spend a lot of time on my feet so the idea of standing in line for an hour just doesn't do it for me. Guess if I REALLY wanted a big ticket item....But I can't argue with saving $92. I took advantage of the warmer temps here in the midwest and got my outside Christmas lights in place.

Jan in FL 11-25-2011 01:37 PM

I did! I SAVED $302 and spent $176...i bought rolls of batting - 50% off then another 25% off total purchase! I got 10 yards of white, 10 yards of off white and almost 9 yards of black.....I had so much fun! I got a couple of those ten drawer rolling carts and some odds and ends too...

susie-susie-susie 11-25-2011 01:49 PM

I went today. Each time I go to a Black Friday sale, I say never again, but I go!! I spent $25.00 and saved $23.00. Not as good as many of you, but I'm satisfied. Had to wait in a very long line to get my fabric cut and it took about 1 1/2 hours. Then it was on to pay. That took another 45 min. More time standing in line than shopping. They were really good about putting the fabrics back on the shelves. Some ladies couldn't fit another bolt of fabric into their carts. A lot of fleece was leaving to store.

I did not go to any Black Friday sale. Sounds like you got a great deal though! I hate the crowds, pushing, shoving and craziness, so I stay away.

Camping Angel 11-25-2011 02:05 PM

I did not go to Joanns today. Having one of those time of trying "not buying anything until..." Our Joanns is good about having people take a number from cut counter and then doing your shopping. They call numbers over loud speaker, but if you don't show up after the second call they will go on to the next number. Reduces most of the waiting in line at the cut counter.

Julie in WA 11-25-2011 02:11 PM

I went to Joanns! In fact, I hit TWO Joanns! It was kind of busy, but I pick up a couple of quilt magazines and leaf through them while standing in line! Not a big spender, though. I bought two small pieces of fabric for $5.19 and saved $6.58!

Lori S 11-25-2011 02:16 PM

I bought a whole roll of batting , Warm and Natural. Got to avoid the extreme cutting counter wait , as the stock boy went and got the cutting slip you need to check out. In and out in under 10 minutes , back in bed by 6:30AM.

JoanneS 11-25-2011 02:18 PM

I bought a bolt of Warm & Natural on 50% sale, plus the 25% off. It was worth waiting in line! Also found Fiscars nippers @60% 0ff, then the 25% off. Ditto adhesive spray @ 50% off + the 25%. They were stamping our 25% off everything coupon when we entered the store,so it didn't matter if we didn't get to the registers bfore noon. Nice!

ontheriver 11-25-2011 02:19 PM

No shopping for me today, can't stand crowds. I did buy a roll of batting online last week with 50% off coupon code.

sharon b 11-25-2011 02:22 PM

I went also - spent 77.00 saved 225.00 bought some flannel, snippers for the rag quilts I want to make with the flannel- a small rotary cutter ( 25mm) and extra blades - and some thread . It was crazy but I have learned as you walk in grab a cutting number then walk around get your fabric , notions, etc. when your number is called you are ready to go :)

Essiescott 11-25-2011 02:36 PM

Well I went to Joanns, did not get up early to do so, got there around 9:45 or so. Had to follow someone out of the store to get their cart so I could have one. Pulled a number before I even started shopping. They were like on B50 something and mine was C60 something. I thought oh boy this is gonna be fun. Well saw a friend in there, she found a ticket someone had dropped or thrown away, and it was lower than hers, so she gave me hers, which was lower than mine. After all was said and done, she ended up not needing hers at all, so I went from C60 something to C07, which was a good hours wait---thank goodness for friends. On savings---I was really fretting as the total prior to her taking coupons off, and hitting the total button, was in excess of 500.00 I was wondering how in the world am I going to come up with all of that money as I didn't have that much. Then after coupons, % off and such. I ended up with a bill of around $167.00 and a savings of over $450.00 Phew was I glad to see that total. They calculated what the regular price was vs sale price in the savings. One thing that was to my benefit, and I had never seen this happen, was I purchased some of that 108 inch quilt backing fabric---I wanted what was on the bolt, which was 5+ yards on one bolt, and 8+ yards on the other. The clerk coded it as if it was the end of bolt, and gave it to me for 75% off---whoa doggie, was I in heaven---I was going to use my 50% off coupon, but with her coding it that way---I got to use my 25% off total purchase---so what would have cost me $169 she gave it to me for 42.25 then with my coupon, was able to get it for $31.67 or $2.44 a yard for 108 inch wide quilt backing fabric. Talk about a blessing.

Me, too!!!

Cagey 11-25-2011 02:43 PM

Planning on going tomorrow - late afternoon. Hoping the crowds will be down by then.

EmbQuilt 11-25-2011 03:02 PM

Took me 3 hours to get my cutting done! It was insane.

Jim 11-25-2011 03:32 PM

plan on going tomorrow...coupons in hand and some comfortable shoes

Beachbound 11-25-2011 03:33 PM

I went & got a ton of flannel but didn't even think about batting! Y'all are brilliant!!! oh well, there was barely enough room in the car for the flannel...we hit a 'few' other stores as well.

decky 11-25-2011 03:34 PM

I didn't go anywhere today. I had the grandkiddies until 11 today, but I wouldn't have gone out anyway hates standing in lines.

MollieSue 11-25-2011 03:40 PM

I went after I got off work at 12:45pm today, the store was PACKED!! I was in there for close to two hours, and had enough. I really only wanted the flannel, so came home and bought it online for just .50 more a yard! Not quite the selection I wanted, but still good enough! It's suppose to be here in 7-10 days!! :) :)
Forgot to add I also got free shipping as I spent over $35!!

SouthPStitches 11-25-2011 03:47 PM

I'm checking it out tomorrow a.m.; still 25% off total purchases. I just couldn't begin to handle the aggravation today. Stayed home and sewed instead. Although I may be spending a little more, I'm saving a ton in aggravation.

Gail B 11-25-2011 05:27 PM

I went today. Didn't get there until 7:30 so there were lots of ladies that had carts full of fabric. Consequently the shelves weren't as full so the selection of Christmas fabrics was not great. Did get a lot of flannel for back of baby quilts. Will go earlier next year.

charmpacksplus 11-25-2011 05:33 PM

I went to Joann's this morning. I should have stayed home. Not that there were any problems with traffic, parking, service, or how much I saved.... all of that was perfect. It's how much I spent that's the problem. Yikes! I went for Christmas fabrics, lots of them, and some thread. Spent way over my allowance..... but I saved 180.39 :-)

1000projects 11-25-2011 05:34 PM

The half price batting is VERY tempting to me ... But we dont do black friday shopping. No fabric haul could be that important. We took the kids and their cousins out to lunch and to a steam train ride.

lots2do 11-25-2011 05:38 PM

I got to mine around 8:30 this morning and it was dead. Really, really peaceful. Probably helped me spend much more than I'd planned. I didn't check to see how much I 'saved', will have to. I bought a lot of yummy yarn since I am doing mostly knitting these days. With the old empty nest, I seem to prefer to hang out with hubby downstairs and just knit up a storm.

1000projects 11-25-2011 05:46 PM

Just looked at my email coupons for tomorrow... Pretty tempting! We have relatives in town though, so probably wont work out.

Corry 11-25-2011 05:52 PM

I went to Joann's but did not get there in time to get my 25% off but I got some good deals. I did not spend alot of money but I specifically wanted to pick up some bobbin thread for my embroidery machine. I was very low and I bought a spool for $8.89 and got one free. These will last me till next year. I needed some sticky stabilizer but they did not have it by the roll so I only got a small sheet of it for half price. i need to find somewhere to buy a roll of that reasonable. I stopped at Hobby Lobby too and they had Christmas fabric 50% off and had a few fabrics I really wanted. Small prints and i have been looking for cardinals with Holly and a tan background and found it!! Got it for $3.49 a yard. I want to make a quilt for my cousin with cardinals and have been looking for this fabric for 2 years. They had it at a quilt store and it was $10.00 a yard and I just couldn't afford it at the time. I have it now. Now if I can find some stabilizer.

charmpacksplus 11-25-2011 06:06 PM

I was just thinking.... Now that we know how much we can save, should we go back tomorrow? LOL There's another 25% off total purchase coupon good until noon for those of you who missed it today. It's supposed to be rainy here so I'll stay home and play with the fabric I bought today.

lynnsim 11-25-2011 06:09 PM

I went to Joann's today. Also got my # as soon as I walked in; it was 46 and they were waiting on #16 -- crazy! I only bought 15 yards of white & creme flannel, few spoos of thread, and a new Fiskars 60 cutter & blades. Very pleased with my savings! It definetely took me longer to wait in the line to cut & the line to check out than it did to do my shopping.

vondae 11-25-2011 06:18 PM

Hubby and I went. He was so patient. Not his favorite thing but, knew it was important to me. I spent $149 and saved $346. And, we found a $5 bill as we were leaving. I scored!

MissM 11-25-2011 06:27 PM

I didn't go to Joann's..did go to Hancock's and had to wait about 20 minutes in line. The crazy stuff was in Walmat's. One of the Walmart's here they had to close the store when two women got into a fight over towels! One of them was arrested. The other Walmart near us also had a fight breakout as well. Then DH was reading in the news about a fight in a Walmart in CA where there was a fight in a Walmart that involved the use of pepper spray and then someone was shot. That is just way over the top. You would never catch me doing any shopping there. Besides...I could never stay awake.

mighty 11-25-2011 06:35 PM

I did not get to go as we had our thanksgiving meal today due to my daughters work schedule. Sounds like you guy really scored!!! Maybe I will make it tomorrow,I hope!!!

deedum 11-25-2011 06:38 PM

No shopping here today, although I do plan to buy something at a independent business tomorrow to support them.(Most likely a lqs) I totally dislike standing inline , I totaling dislike the crowds, and I tend to spend more, so I just stayed home.

marymc 11-25-2011 06:53 PM

I went in about 10 this morning. I did not even attempt to get any fabric cut but I did pick up a bunch of thread, batting and pillow forms. great prices on basics that will always get used. my daughter was with me and she just recently left a job at Joann's on the west coast to move home. She was actually sad that she couldn't be working. She has worked retail for for 5 years and this was the first year in that time that she didn't work black Friday. She texted some co-workers saying she missed them and they said they thought they missed her more right now!! I must say that the lines kept moving and everyone we encountered was friendly.

khurtdvm 11-25-2011 07:42 PM

I went in this morning just before they opened. My primary goal was to get a cart - lol! I was armed with a full drink and a book for standing in line. Everyone was polite and well-behaved, so despite it being slammed, it was actually an okay experience.

Daylesewblessed 11-25-2011 07:44 PM

I have been going to Joann's black Friday sales for years, and this was the best experience of them all! The weather was nice, and I got there 10 minutes before 6:00 a.m. There was a longer line than usual outside. I thought sure I wouldn't get a cart, let alone one of the bigger ones. Our store does not have a number system for cutting. The first thing I did was grab a roll of batting and had it cut before the cutting tables got busy. While it was being cut, I loaded my cart with fleece. They had formed a single line to the cutting table, and I was lucky enough to get the best cutter on the team. My order took about 15 minutes to cut with me doing the folding. After that I browsed the store for a few more things.

They had 3 checkout clerks, and that went fairly fast with me bagging my own stuff. We don't have one of the big Joann's stores, and our store got a new manager about 6 months ago. He is really professional and was on the floor helping the clerks and troubleshooting this morning. He has developed a healthy team spirit among the staff, and they were all pulling together. It did help that there were no computer malfunctions while I was there.

I spent $110, and the ticket stated that I had saved over $400. I was done and in my car by 7:00 a.m. I will be back tomorrow morning, buying more fleece. My strategy is to go for the smaller bolts and get part of what is on them at remnant price. Today they were discounting remnants by 75%. That comes to 75 cents/yard for the blizzard fleece remnants. I can do a lot of Linus blankets from what I buy this weekend.

Now I just need to find space in the house to put everything!

wesing 11-25-2011 08:51 PM

We went today, but didn't go at "Oh-Dark-Thirty." We got there around 2:00PM and bought a rotating cutting mat for $17, 6 queen size batting for $17.50 each, a ruler, and a few other miscellaneous items. We paid ~ $162 and they said we saved ~ $190. That and furniture shopping was the only Black Friday shopping we did.

They would have had to give the fabric away to get us to stand in the cutting line. I think there had to be 60 people or more in line, plus all the other people who were wandering around the store.

Deb watkins 11-25-2011 08:56 PM

Oh, I didn't go, but after reading all of your great finds and savings.....I am just a little jealous! Especially with the batting!!!! My Black Friday "Thankfulness" is that I had two more join for the swap I am hosting....with the switch to the new Board, and life getting in the way of life....I had several drop out for various reasons.

slk350 11-25-2011 09:43 PM

I went to one of the 3 Joanns near me. I got quite a bit of the flannel, some X-Mas fabric, a pair of Gingher 9" scissors (reg. $20.99--less 50% coupon) and then another 25% off the whole order, also got a bunch of special ornaments 60% off plus the 25% off. A puzzle and some of those craft foamies for my grandson (everything on sale). Still spent almost $65, but saved over $150 !! And the place had a lot of people, but but not as bad as I thought it might be. The problem I had was there wasn't much of the flannel on the shelves. It was in everyone's carts !! They had about 7 or 8 people cutting fabric and quite a few at the registers. The lines at the cutting and check out moved very quickly. I spent more time finding what I wanted than in lines.....Going back tomorrow for the packaged interfacing and a few other things.

Painiacs 11-25-2011 10:03 PM

Wow you all did great! I don't go as I can't stand that long. We don't have a joanns anyway!

sew1096 11-25-2011 10:25 PM

I didn't go. I just can't face Black Friday anymore. But my BFF (dove911) did and bought one of the colored tray holders and a lot of flannel and fleece. She said she saved hundreds too!
