...I DON'T LIKE PP!!! I'm making a plane PP'd quilt for charity. It's looking good, but it's a pain!

Kryssa 02-26-2010 04:14 PM

I am new... what is PP?

BellaBoo 02-26-2010 04:14 PM

It's an aquired like.

PP is Paper Piecing. Hello newbie! Nice to see you here.

OdessaQuilts 02-26-2010 04:33 PM

sewnsewer2, yes,pp can be a pain, but the results are fantabulous.

LucyInTheSky 02-26-2010 05:45 PM

I agree with you. I've tried it a few times, but I like piecing. Ultimately less seam ripping (and yes, I do take my time lining up edges and pining and they still don't open up right!)

tlrnhi 02-26-2010 05:46 PM

I think it also depends on the design you are making too.
I like PP, but have tried some designs that go straight to the trash.

grammynan 02-26-2010 05:48 PM

I'm new to paper piecing and I think I'm hooked!!

Machel 02-26-2010 05:49 PM

PP erggghhhh...... Still trying to get the hang of it. Not doing so well with it. But I love what other people are doing with it.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one. It's not so much that I don't like it ... but it sure doesn't like me! Because it is very easy for me to get things upside-down, backwards, and inside out, I have to put forth a real effort to get the piecing done correctly. Possibly it would get easier if I practiced a lot, but I decided there wasn't enough gain to justify the amount of pain and that I can probably live happily the rest of my days without ever doing any more paper piecing.

pam1966 02-26-2010 06:25 PM

So far I've only tried simple ones and I've liked them. I've seen some that look like they take a gazillion different little pieces and I don't think I want to do that!

Olivia's Grammy 02-26-2010 06:28 PM

I love pp, string piecing, regular piecing, piecing makes me happy. Just finished a log cabin with recyled blue jeans. I'll post a pic when I get it quilted.

Amen to that!

Jingle 02-26-2010 06:55 PM

I really don't have a desire to do PP. I do want to make a crumb quilt, I already have a long list. Oh well, maybe someday.

fun2quilt 02-26-2010 07:00 PM

Love PP!
I use the freezer paper method when doing it, makes it easier for me. So many things can be created using this method, and yes some of them are made up of a gazzilion pieces, but there is no exacting cutting involved so they go together fairly quickly and the results are beautiful!

zkosh 02-26-2010 07:15 PM

I'm with you guys that love PP. I also love regular piecing and most anything that is stitching away on my machine. Using freezer paper to PP really gives nice results.

amma 02-26-2010 08:22 PM

Chain piecing can help, you get a piece figured out and repeat it while it is still fresh in your mind :D:D:D

When I have taught this, I tell people to ignore the front of the foundation...it is just a sewing tool...the back is where all of the piecing is going on  and back there it is being pieced together like any other block...

Print out a couple of extra block foundations...outline the block on the back side of the paper...holding it up to a light source while tracing, and use that as your guide. Write on it, noting which fabric goes where and again, ignore the front side.
Cut out the individual pieces of the second extra copy, put an X on the back and use them as cutting templates, lay them X side up on top of the right side of your fabric, add a 3/8" seam allowance all of the way around. When you get more comfortable with PP you can go to a 1/4" around each piece. Cut out all of your pieces, attach the template to them with a binder clip, start chain piecing :D:D:D

Gramof6 02-27-2010 12:18 AM

And this is exactly why I am so scared to even try it. :-D I would love to enjoy it but am afraid that I will despise it. Make sense? There are some gorgeous PP Patterns out here. Sorry you aren't having fun with it.

Hey! I think they look fantastic!!! Good job!

farnsworth 02-27-2010 03:32 AM

I think that paper piecing takes the right mind set and the right tools to make it easier. I am doing a paper pieced quilt of trees and it is 12 trees 4 corners and 18 border pieces all paper pieced. My whole quilting group is doing the same one. We use a printable paper piecing paper, and also use an add a quarter ruler. But i think you did a great job. I would just keep practicing.

patty48 02-27-2010 06:18 AM

Love Paper Piecing! I think you either love or hate it. I loved it right off the bat.

I've never of using freezer paper. Do you print you patterns on the freezer paper? Looks like it would be to heavy to tear off. Any more info on freezer paper? Sounds interesting.

I LOVE PP! I taught a class in it at the hospital where I work. We had a co-worker that passed away from cancer, so made this quilt in her memory. "Cathy's Quilt" was raffled off and we made $1,000 to donate to the ACS. Teaching the class was challenging as the majority of the participants had never made a quilt before :? But it was a lot of fun, also. :D The gal in the picture was the lucky winner - a nurse who was also the best friend of Cathy. (I think she bought the most tickets!) She later donated the quilt to the family of the deceased.

P.S. My avatar is totally PP'd also

Moonpi 02-27-2010 06:39 AM

It's not for everyone. I end up wasting as much fabric as I use when doing pp.

Rose Marie 02-27-2010 07:02 AM

I have only done it once and hated it. What a waste of fabric and you dont get the joy of watching a block go togather.
If it was a very hard to piece block I would use it but it would have to be something I loved so much that I had to do it.
Not to mention the waste of paper also.

Quilt4u 02-27-2010 07:26 AM

I tryed it ounce. Have to try it again.

SaraSewing 02-27-2010 07:29 AM

What a beautiful quilt you all made!

I love PP, and the more I do it, the better I get. I've found that ripping out only happens to me if I try to put too small of a piece of fabric on. The economy mode kicks in. We all like something different, so find your nitch and bloom!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I'm so new I squeak. I'm doing a "learn something new each block" sampler quilt. And one of the blocks I chose was the Birds in Flight block. 9 inches square and 19 pieces. Everyone of them lined up perfectly.

This is definitely my way to go.

quiltsRfun 02-27-2010 10:25 AM

I've never tried PP. Always thought it would be easier than regular piecing and with less mistakes. Now you've got me wondering.

mjsylvstr 02-27-2010 11:41 AM

love it, love it, love it........can't get near enough of it !!!!!!!!!!!

I want to do a small violet wall hanging and am looking for a pattern.. My DIL's mother just moved to NJ and I wanted to welcome her with the state's flower.. I want it small but not too small..(does that make sense).for her bedroom.

I have one small pattern.if anyone has a bit larger one, can you let me know.....

As I have mentioned before, those "add a 1/4" ruler" are the best and make a world of difference in the trimming.......
actually, there is no trimming after, all is done before sewing on the line.........
they're GRRRRRREATTTTTTTTTT !

thanks so much. MaryJane

GladGrams 02-27-2010 03:48 PM

I admit I am intimidated, but I bought the Carol Doakes dvd and she makes it look "doable"... Let you know how I make out.

fun2quilt 02-27-2010 04:26 PM

You did a great job, love your planes!
Keep at PP and before you know it, you might just love it!
I cut my freezer paper to the size of computer paper and run it through the printer.

Rose Lee 02-27-2010 04:31 PM

Welcome to the club, I also hate PP

Pat and pups 02-27-2010 04:46 PM

When I was a very new quilter, I saw a PP pattern that I had to make. I had to--it had everything but my name on it. I bought the kit and taught myself to PP so I could make it. I ended up making 6 of the little wall hangings for gifts. I still love it.

If you want to learn to do something, find a pattern that you really, really want to do. Decide you'll do it and you'll find out you can.

The violet pattern that's too small can be enlarged on a copier. If you want it really large, it can be printed on 2 or more pieces of paper.

Rose Lee 02-27-2010 04:53 PM

Thanks for the info. The reason I don't care for it is because I never know which side to place the material on, if on the printed side of the paper or on back, (dumb,I know). So I just gave up on it , plus when cutting material I seem to cut it too small.

Well, I guess it is just me because they don't go together that quickly with me. Even those with a few pieces takes me awhile & well lets put it this way I wish I could make mine look like others I've seen. Remember the BOM Tim Compass Star well mine had a slight hour glass shape to it & was a bit undersized too. Ahhhh. But I am not giving up, I'll try again someday maybe.

QuickStitch 02-27-2010 05:18 PM

I know it must not be for everybody, but it sure is relaxing and I can do it watching tv and not have to think much about what I'm doing. It is actually the first piece I am doing by hand. So far, I have a stack of flowers, haven't finished making all that I need though. Can't wait to get to that point.

sewnsewer2 02-27-2010 05:46 PM

Wow quiltingnoni you are amazing! What a wonderful thing you both did!

jumpin' judy 02-27-2010 05:53 PM

What is the "rule of thumb" for cutting fabric for PP? I keep ending up with too small pieces and have to "unsew". aaarrrggg.

fun2quilt 02-27-2010 05:58 PM

I hold the piece in place and look at it through the front, if it covers all with at least 1/4 ' around then I sew, but I am doing the flip and sew method with freezer paper.
