I very seldom ever pin anything. I'm thankful I have Accufeed on my Janome!

katcox 01-07-2011 01:29 PM

Yup ,That's how I did it. You will know when.

Sharonsews 01-07-2011 02:19 PM

If I am sewing long pieces together, I pin them. Otherwise, I do not. Maybe I should pin all the time and my blocks will come out better. ;)

crankygran 01-07-2011 03:05 PM

It depends on the pattern. Many do not require pinning. Some will get up and run if you don't pin. Mostly I stay away from those.

Me too.

ktmo815 01-07-2011 04:22 PM

I pin all nesting seams - otherwise, only with long strips

lollygagging 01-07-2011 04:46 PM

Only when seams MUST match. Remember a thread here that advised pinning at those seams, checking accuracy, then re-doing if necessary or continuing on. One of the better tips I've gotten.

sewbizgirl 01-07-2011 05:12 PM

If your seams match up where you have the seam allowance on the bottom piece pointing the opposite way as the seam allowance on the top piece, that alone holds the seam in line without a pin, while sewing.

Lyncat 01-07-2011 05:17 PM

I pin when I'm putting on a border.

penski 01-07-2011 05:19 PM

not if i dont have to , so my answer would be no

wildyard 01-07-2011 05:26 PM

I pin to match seams and occasionally when I'm sewing a long run such as a border if there might be some stretch in one of the fabrics.

leonajo 01-07-2011 05:47 PM

pin

jean1941 01-07-2011 05:59 PM

The only time I pin is 2 blocks together and do not want to sew wrong edges together

I pin, pin, pin!

rob529 01-07-2011 06:11 PM

I'm an over pinner. Don't remember ever not pinning.

GrammaO 01-07-2011 06:26 PM

I seldom pin pieces, only long runs like borders, or if the two pieces don't 'nest' together, but then I'm impatient :-)

Judie 01-07-2011 06:41 PM

Nope, don't pin.. I do use an awl to make sure my fabrics stay just where I want them as they go under the needle. I will pin strips when I'm sewing rows together, then use my trusty awl just to make sure!

IBQUILTIN 01-07-2011 06:57 PM

sometimes yes, sometimes no. depends on various things

Crazy Quiltin Robin 01-07-2011 07:19 PM

nope ..... never have

cindygale 01-07-2011 07:59 PM

only when seams have to match and also when sewing bias blocks..

Dee 01-07-2011 08:03 PM

I don't usually pin. But baste a lot.

grammysharon 01-07-2011 08:06 PM

I do @ intersections!

Berta48 01-07-2011 08:26 PM

I match up the seams and that's about it except for when I am quilting it.

k9dancer 01-07-2011 08:34 PM

If I need to match points or seams, I sure do pin!

I also pin as little as I can. I especially pin when matching points

audsgirl 01-07-2011 09:10 PM

I've been quilting for over 12 years, and I still have to pin. I can't seem to keep pieces from sliding apart if I don't. Maybe it's because I don't do well with machinery!

OneMoreQuilt 01-07-2011 09:31 PM

Only if it's a tricky seam, like curves!

cathyvv 01-07-2011 09:32 PM

I'm with Amma. Washable glue sticks work extremely well, and I never 'pin' myself. Key word is WASHABLE.

Gerbie 01-07-2011 10:19 PM

Ditto. After watching several of Sharon Schambers videos and tutorials on YouTube and her network. I have started using Elmers school glue and love it. It washes out and comes apart easier when you need it to than taking a bunch of pins out. I used it on the binding of the last quilt I did for Christmas a king size and it worked great. The binding seemed to lay much flater and it was much easier to sew, because it was as though the binding was already sewn on. I did about 30 mug rugs and glued them, as well as the five table runners I did for Christmas. I like this idea and it really works for me.

PKITTY1 01-07-2011 10:20 PM

I pinned alot when I first started. Now I only pin for tricky things (star points in particular). Pin however much you want. There is one thing to keep in mind if someone else hasn't already mentioned it. Try to keep the pins away from the sewing machine needle. I've been lucky not to be injured by flying metal (knock on wood) because I didn't take the pins out quick enought.

You don't actually have to pin the pieces on the seam line. You can place the pin about 1/2" below and parallel to the edge of the pieces. If you use the flathead pins, your machine will roll right over them without your needle ever hitting a pin.

kim_s 01-07-2011 10:28 PM

I pin everything. As my pieces go through they seem to get a little off kilter towards the end if I don't pin. Maybe using a stiletto or something like that would help though...

jitkaau 01-07-2011 10:36 PM

Rarely.

kwiltkrazy 01-07-2011 10:42 PM

Very rarely, only on the most complicated blocks, I do pinless curved piecing and love it.

Good Answer! Good Answer!

Jo Mama 01-08-2011 12:17 AM

Yes -- pinning makes me feel more comfortable. It always makes me more accurate.

VernaL 01-08-2011 12:18 AM

I've been sewing for years and quilting for years too. I just always pin. I hate ripping stitches and it seems if I don't pin, I just have to rip. I just keep pinning.

ibequilting1 01-08-2011 03:30 AM

I pin as little as possible, only when I feel I need to match a seam. I use my stiletto a lot.

chickadeee55 01-08-2011 04:31 AM

If I have seams to butt up, I will pin them. It is easier than unsewing it they don't match up later.

It depends on the block that I am working on as well as the size of the pieces being sewn together.
