One more newbie question....Does everybody pin before they sew when piecing?
Thank you!
David

Granna of 5 01-05-2011 05:58 PM

No, I don't.

erstan947 01-05-2011 05:59 PM

I do depending on the block or row. I pin as little as I can get away with.

Dingle 01-05-2011 05:59 PM

I pin everything except when I'm sewing 2" squares together. I'm a newbie too and just can't seem to do it without pins. Fabric shifts on me too much. Maybe someday.

lovingheart 01-05-2011 05:59 PM

Not always, it depends, as a newbie, I would pin.

Cyn 01-05-2011 05:59 PM

It depends if the seams meet where they are suppose to. I hate pinning if I don' have to.

Stitchnripper 01-05-2011 06:00 PM

I used to all the time when I was getting started. Now only when there are seams that have to match.

Zebra2 01-05-2011 06:00 PM

Not unless I absolutely have to and that isn't very often! I think it depends a lot on the machine you use and how well/evenly it feeds fabric through.

Yellow Bird 01-05-2011 06:02 PM

Depends. You start out pinning and then as you gain more experience you get to the point when you know when you MUST pin to get it right.

kbs 01-05-2011 06:04 PM

Only if it is a difficult seam. The less pins to hit with your needle.

leatheflea 01-05-2011 06:07 PM

I pin most of the time, sure beats going back and ripping out.

Quiltforme 01-05-2011 06:21 PM

I used to until I sewed over a pin and broke my needle. I like the freedom of not pinning it is a personal thing. Once you get comfortable you will join the ranks of the pinless!

Mattee 01-05-2011 06:27 PM

I don't pin unless there are seems to match up. If I'm just sewing individual pieces together, no pins!

BRenea 01-05-2011 06:32 PM

I used to pin a lot, but now I use my stiletto to hold things in place as I sew.

amma 01-05-2011 06:33 PM

I am the odd ball.. I do not like to pin, as it distorts the edges of my seamlines, and it usually causes me problems than good. If something needs to be pinned, I usually glue it with Elmers  :D:D:D

Jim's Gem 01-05-2011 06:37 PM

No. I do if there are connecting seams. I will pin the seams to match but for strips or just sewing pieces together, no pinning.

sewingladydi 01-05-2011 06:44 PM

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Do what works for you. It varies depending on the fabric, block pattern, angles, etc.

Most pin only when need to

jemma 01-05-2011 06:44 PM

only at intersecting seams--saves unsewing--always buy long thin glasshead pins a dream to use more expensive but worth it--also use pins as markers ie which way up etc

MaryStoaks 01-05-2011 06:51 PM

Only when sewing triangles.

QM 01-05-2011 07:12 PM

That's my approach. If I don't pin, I won't forget to remove pins. I try always to pin join points, however. This is not to say that I sew randomly. I usually hod things in place as I go.

Unless i am doing really big ones (9" or more), I don't pin HSTs

Murphy 01-05-2011 07:13 PM

I pin when needed to prevent shifting.

CarrieAnne 01-05-2011 07:17 PM

I usually pin.

Same here. If it's a small seam, I don't pin. If it's a seam with a lot of intersections, then I will put pins at the intersections. Totally depends on the specific situation. One thing I never do is to sew over a pin. I will always stop my machine and take the pin out rather than risk breaking a needle or pin or doing damage to my machine.

tjradj 01-05-2011 07:22 PM

Only if I'm trying to match points - then I'll match them up with a pin and then pin it in place. The rest goes as the fabric leads me. Mind you, it doesn't stray because I've starched it within an inch of its life!

QM 01-05-2011 07:22 PM

I wish I could say that I never sewed over a pin, but I INTEND to remove pins before I get there.

LivelyLady 01-05-2011 07:36 PM

I only pin if it's absolutely necessary; I don't have any problems with fabric slipping because I starch the devil out of it.

franie 01-05-2011 07:37 PM

Depends on what I am sewing. LOL The U shaped pins are often used by some at the matching seams.

samifel 01-05-2011 07:41 PM

I find that if I'm carefully iron, making sure that seams to be sewed are ironed in the opposite direction, the I use my fingers to place on seam up against the other. It saves pinning

SaraSewing 01-05-2011 07:50 PM

very very very seldom do I pin.

hperttula123 01-05-2011 08:18 PM

I don't piece with pins at all, but always do with my binding. I just hate using pins.

Bottle Blonde 01-05-2011 08:27 PM

I pin ----- it makes me slow down to remove the pin before the needle runs over it ---- when I sew too fast my machine doesn't feed the fabric evenly and I end up ripping out seams.

Airwick156 01-05-2011 08:27 PM

I pin everything except when I do the 2 inch strips. But instead of pinning EVERY inch like I used to do, I graduated to pinning a hands width apart now. But when I very first started to sew, I literally pinned every half inch. I was broken by that habit from my mom. She said if I wanted her to help me sew "YOU WILL NOT PIN LIKE THAT!!!"

0tis 01-05-2011 08:32 PM

sometimes, just depends on what kind of seam I am sewing.

amandasgramma 01-05-2011 08:33 PM

I pin if I've got star points or something that will REALLY show if it's not lined up right. I use applique pins - they're smaller and thinner and really don't distort the edges.

sewwhat85 01-05-2011 08:42 PM

i very rarely pin but have quilting buddies that pin everything it is what you are comfortable with

Jim 01-05-2011 10:49 PM

I rarely pin....ONLY in a HAVE TOO case do I pin....just saw a video on using elmers(on binding) that was interesting

Gina_D 01-05-2011 10:56 PM

I've never used pins for piecing. Never saw the need to. I guess I do it by 'feel'.

BizzieLizzie 01-06-2011 12:24 AM

I pin if I want my points to line up properly or accurately. Not all the time.

Annaquilts 01-06-2011 12:29 AM

Hardly ever.

QM 01-06-2011 01:16 AM

I only pin bindings at the corners and when I am joining the binding. I use hair clips when I am sewing down the already attached binding.
