I'll choose a color that would look good on those several rows and then do some sort of design, whether its a feather, or just meandering, across those rows. Then I change thread as the colors change. I've drawn on this pink ribbon Bargello to sort of illustrate what I mean. Sorry it's on it's side - don't know what happened!

I think you nailed what to do perfectly! I have wanted to try one and now I am closer to doing it since I've seen how you did the quilting. Thank you for sharing, but then that's what this wonderful group of quilters does!

Beautiful! Congrats on a job well done. Can't help with quilting suggestions, tho it sounds like you have already received great ideas.

I think I'll be going with this one, I was going to follow the square pattern but not now, I forgot about all the turning i'd have to do.

thanx all for your input

I love ity. Wish I had the skill to do one like that. The colors are amazing.

The last bargello I did, I quilted from the back. I measured and marked all corners and midpoints, then drew the flowing design from there. It was a breeze that way and I didn't get distracted by the many colors on the front. Yours came out very nice.

Beautiful quilt! I like the idea of free motion following the design lines.

Very beautiful quilt!!

Gladys 02-18-2013 06:24 PM

Oh wow, that is gorgeous but I can't look at it too long. LOL I agree I'd follow the lines but not everyone of them.

champagnebubbles 02-18-2013 10:39 PM

I am working on one, I can only pray mine will be as wonderful as yours!!

mjhaess 02-19-2013 05:13 PM

I just saw a gorgeous bargello at guild today. She quilted it on her domestic machine, straight line on the diagonal of the blocks. It made some places look curved. It was stunning!

That is absolutely beautiful! How long did it take you?

I started collecting the fabric in November had a couple of weeks break over Christmas, and finished it in February, I didn't sew everyday only when i felt like it, I make to many mistakes if i sew when i don't really want to do it (not that that happens very often lol)

I LOVE your bargello top! Looks like lots of work! I like to quilt bargellos with the Swirls template fromm Circle Lord. It gives the quilt movement, but does not distract from the bargello pattern. Here is a photo of my Bella Bella Bargello quilted with Swirls on my longarm.

If it were me, I would first follow the lines of the dark squares. That would provide a warped diamond framework. I might even do two parallel lines through the dark squares, to set it off a bit more. Then you could do different FMQ patterns in different sections. For example, in all the blue sections, you could FMQ swirls. In all the purple sections, you could FMQ circles. In all the yellow sections, you could FMQ straight lines. Then in the smallest diamonds, you could do a little flower in each. Just something different in each color, but something you plan ahead.

This quilt top is really stunning! I wouldn't have thought of putting these colors together, but they look amazing! You have incredible vision.
