Ours was remodeled a couple of years ago and they kept the fabric dept. They say it's bigger, but I just don't see it.

I have two walmarts within 35 miles of me. The one that is only 7 miles away did remodel and yes the fabric dept went away. So far the other one is still carrying fabric however it is far enough away that I need to justify driving that far and thusly I don't go very often. I do miss even getting thread. Fabric shops are hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Judy of Olalla Wa

the people at our Walmart also said that they were not getting rid of the fabric dept and indeed they did - I got some really great bargains but I sure do miss it. I think they don't know until the last minute

Same thing happened at my store. The lady who ran it said she kept ordering it and it came but then they got rid of it really fast and now they are remodeling. The pharmacy was in a box near the front door. Their part if finished and now the pharmacists can't hard anymore. We can see them beind their counter LOL. Also the front restrooms are closed until they are finished which seems to be taking a long time.

the good news is that there is nice thread available from at least two websites that's actually less expensive than the thread walmart sells. yes ... even less expensive than the cotton/poly blend.

connectingthreads.com (my source for solids)
threadart.com (where i get my variegated cottons and polyester embroidery thread)

the number of yards on each spool is much greater than at wallyworld. the per/spool prices are either around the same or lower. since a spool will last a lot longer, even the shipping charges keep you within budget. (unless you're like me. i save up and buy googobs once a year so shipping is free. )

add to that the wider variety of colors; it's all cotton; and spun with quilters in mind.

if you're into machine embroidery, ctsusa.com sells poly embroidery thread at very good prices, too.

i also haunt this website for Red Rooster brand fabric (always $2.99 per yard). even with shipping added, it's less expensive than some of the fabs at walmart. bonus: it's a brand they sell in many quilt shops. they just charge a whole lot less.

do i still hit my wallworld fab dept? natch. who can pass a rack of fabric without at least looking? but when ours downsized, i was very relieved to find these alternate sources.

I was told by the Ava Walmart that eventually ALL the Walmarts are going to DISCONTINUE fabric! That is ALL of them!

Patrice-
That was a kind thing for you to do...posting alternate sources with fair prices.
:)

They just got rid of the fabric department at the only local Wally World here in my area. We they were getting rid of the material (none of it on any kind of sale :-( ), the woman working the department said that WalMart was planning to open their own fabric STORES instead of having small departments in their stores. Whether this is true or not, I haven't been able to verify. But it sure would be great.
