Hi everyone - you have all made me so welcome and I thank you very much!! - in the introductions area and also the pictures area (that pictures area is deadly - I could spend all day looking at other peoples lovely quilts!!!)
ANYWAY - I was wondering if anyone who admired my Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt had any idea where I could buy a hegagon graph paper?? I have been looking for one for years, the next GFG quilt (due for competion in the summer of 2016!!) was not designed on paper but the NEXT ONE I would like to try a design before I start - so any ideas? My other question is - where do you buy these lovely border fabrics?? I never see them anywhere? Maybe I am not looking hard enough! LOL! I visit the US from time to time and may be in Wisconsin in October - so I thought I would start trying to find out where I can get these things??? Thanks for your help! R |

I would google quilt and fabric shops in the area you will be visiting. If any of them have a website, you can really plan ahead. Of course there is the option of ordering online - I think postage is manageable on most sites that ship internationally. As expensive as some of the brand name fabrics are in your neck of the woods (or isle), you can pay out a bit in postage to get what you want.
Happy shopping. |

Happy shopping. I find fabric irresitably inexpensive in the US and have had a few lots shipped to me - still works out MUCH cheaper than here or the UK. Fabric in our local quilt store is $16 a yard!!!! (some more!) I buy some there to support the economy - but if I had to buy it all there I would make very few quilts....... Thanks for the advice MadQuilter! |

If you don't want to print out your own check out Connecting Threads. They have them.

The fabric I use for borders is usually yardage from my stash that works ith the project at hand. If there is special border fabric, I'm ignorant about it. All I've ever seen used and used myself was regualr fabric cut up for the borders. Hope this helps you out.

Hi and welcome. Border fabric is sold by the yard. One thing to watch is the length of the repeat.
|
Here's a link to Hancock's of Paducah. They have lots of high quality border fabric: http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item...order--srcin-1

Here is a site for free designing sheets I found last week. You have to scroll down some to see them all , but, there are tons of them in all types of shapes.

Most quilt shops in the U.S. have border fabric, which are usually floral stripes, sold by the yard (usually 44" wide) and you have to cut the borders off the fabric yardage. Jenny Beyer makes beautiful border fabrics to coordinate with other fabrics. Her website has lots of them! I love border fabrics and I often plan my whole quilt around a beautiful border fabric!

Here's a link to Jinny Beyer's website. Just look for her borders!

PurpleBecca, Where in Wisconsin are you visiting? We have a few really nice shops in my area of SW Wisconsin. Most of the LQS sell for about $9.50/yd or higher but we also have a Hancocks and Hobby Lobby that have beautiful fabric for a few dollars less and lots of sales.
I jsut buy yardage that goes with my fabrics or often is even used in the blocks of my quilt to cut my border from. |
paperpieces.com has pre cut hexagons
|
There is an online quilt shop called Paper Pieces that has free design sheets and free pattern sheets that you can print. Hope this helps.
|
Jenny Byers also has borders although hers are usually sophisticated, not cutesy.

I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome. I couldn't believe all the responses. Glad I found this site.
I was up until 3am this morning browsing around this site. So much info & good people. Thanks again |
I looked at Jenny's border fabrics. They are just beautiful. When you buy them by the yard, how wide is the fabric? Is it just the one border width or does the border repeat as many time as width of material. Thanks, Sally

depends on the manufacturer. I have one fabric that has several "lines" that could each be used as a single border or I could keep two or more of them together to have a wider "double" border.
|
I AM STARTING A GRANDMOTHERS FLOWER QUILT FOR THE FIRST TIME. I BOUGHT A METAL HEXAGON TEMPLATE. FOR THE HEXAGONS , I WORK AT A HOSPITAL AND GET HEAVEY PLASTIC SPINAL TRAYS AND CUT MY TEMPLATES FROM THOSE. I DON'T THINK I COULD USE PAPER AND THIS WORKS GREAT. KILLING MY HANDS CUTTING THEM OUT BUT I THINK ITS MUCH BETTER THEN PAPER. I THINK I PAID ABOUT $7.00 FOR THE METAL TEMPLATE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO SEE IF I CAN FIND ANOTHER ONE JUST E-MAIL AND I'LL SEE IF I CAN HELP YOU.

When I was younger I was lucky enough to work in a museum for a year (part time) I had to catalogue an unfinished GFG quilt made in about 1820 - 1840 which had the writing papers still tacked (basted) in!! Fascinating - but WAY too thin for me. I used to use the backs of greetings cards (after the fronts had been used in a multitude of other ways!!) BUT lately I have bought packs of large index cards and cut my hexagons for tacking from them. (not as environmentally friendly but I dont seem as strong as I was in my youth!! LOL! |
