just wondering??

do you make most of your quilts to hang just to the edge of the mattress or to the floor like a bed spread?

I like to make most of my quilts to the edge of the matteress but I was thinking it would be nice making them to the floor so you didn't have to use a bed skirt...

if you don't use a bed skirt what do you use to cover the box spring or do you just leave it?

I was also thinking that if I didn't have a bed skirt ..which I don't right now...that I could measure around the three sides and buy half that in fabric cut it in half on the fold and just slide the cut edge of the fabric under the matteress around three sides ..this would look like a stright bed skirt and no sewing... and if I got tired of it I could always put it in a quilt...

what do you think would it work?.....Thanks

i like my quilts only mattress length because floor length makes them too heavy. also, i often throw off my covers in the night and floor length makes that too difficult.

It's not an either/or situation.

For beds one might also make them with enough overhang....say 4-5" on a side to cover a body (or two) in bed. Or short enough that they fit just under the fold where the pillows go, with 4-5" overhang at the foot.
I make my quilts whatever they turn out to be....fabric and patterns talk to me, don't they to you?.....and they tell me what they want to be.
Then again, I might make a "nap' sized quilt that would just cover me shoulders to feet, and fold it on the foot of the bed during awake time.

I just buy fitted sheets to put on my box spring.

joyce888 09-14-2012 03:57 PM

Don't think I would want mine floor length unless I was using it as a comforter or bedspread. I like mine to cover the mattress and be long enough to be tucked in at the bottom.

ckcowl 09-14-2012 03:57 PM

often i make them to fit the bed they are for- covering the mattress & box springs but not dragging on the floor- sometimes a pattern insists on ending before then- sometimes they are longer, or shorter...just depends on what i want at the time & the pattern/design i am making.
as for your (skirt) idea- if you want- go for it- as you said- it would be easy enough to trade out- change with any whim & you can use the fabric for other things if that's what you want to do-
make what works for you- that's one of the great things about quilting, you can design your own bedding to fit your desires & no one else will have what you have- it's personally yours.

momto5 09-14-2012 04:45 PM

My quilts talk to me as well...they end up being whatever they are, just because. Now, if they're for a customer, that's different. Then they are what the customer wants...which sometimes makes my life a bit difficult!

deedum 09-14-2012 04:48 PM

I would like to make them floor length, but we have old beds and sits up too high. Almost need a step stool to get in them as they are. I am happy if they hang over the edge and then some. No matter how deep I make the borders, they still just hang over the edge. I am usually happy to get them done and happy they cover the bed.

LadyElisabeth 09-14-2012 05:05 PM

They are usually as long or short as the blocks come out when I put it all together. I like them long because so they are warmer and I don't get uncovered when I toss around during the night.

Thank you all for your reply to this post, it was very interesting to hear what everyone thinks on this subject...

mostly everyone that I have made quilts for use them like a bedspread..folding them down at the foot of the bed and then in the morning making the bed with the quilt showing. it makes me feel good that all I have made use them but wish they would use then for what they are made for..to keep you warm..LOL but I guess to each his own..

me I have a few on my bed in the winter and really don't worry how they look, they just keep us warm and toastie..

using a fitter sheet on the box spring is a good idea thanks so much will have to try that.. thanks everyone for your reply

Now how come I've never thought of that!!! lol Sounds like a great idea. I like my quilts to just cover the mattress; and I like a simple dust ruffle. Got my at Penney's for about $20.

fitted sheets on the box springs! hmmm... what a great idea. i can imagine it would fit because most sheets now-a-days fit on a pillow top mattress! thank you for sharing that little tid bit!

Silver Needle 09-14-2012 11:50 PM

I think I could even make the fitted sheet for box springs work for our Sleep Number bed. They are attached to the mattress in the center. But a slit cut from the top and tie the ends together could work! I don't care where the blanket falls on the bed. I just want it wide enough to cover 2 people in a king size bed with enough extra on the sides to snuggle in; instead of fighting over it.

QM 09-15-2012 01:16 AM

My preference is to tuck it in, but have it hang to the floor on the sides.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe put it on upside down but that would be a job you would only want to do once.

majormom 09-15-2012 06:45 AM

I think you have a brilliant idea!

valleyquiltermo 09-15-2012 06:55 AM

I like my quilts to hang down to cover the box springs if there is to be no dust ruffel. If there is a dust ruffel then I make them to just hang past the mattress.

Peckish 09-15-2012 07:58 AM

I took a hot glue gun and glued some fabric to the top of my box springs because I'm lazy. :D It peels off easily for washing (which I admit I don't wash it very often - again, lazy. I'd rather quilt!). I think when I'm ready to change the dust ruffle, I'll glue sections of Velcro to the box springs and the fabric, so it can just pull off. I kind of like the idea of putting a fitted sheet on the box springs, but then that ugly frame would still show. So I'm back to dust ruffles.

Regarding how low I like my quilts to be, our bed is a king size extra-deep mattress with a pillowtop. I feel like the Princess and the Pea when I climb up on it at night. So a king size quilt at 110" square hangs to the bottom of the mattress on both sides, which is just fine by me.

YES Once! OR 2x a Year!! LOL PS: I have a 'Sleep # too'

bearisgray 09-15-2012 08:48 AM

Especially for a king-size bed - I would go for a dust ruffle to cover the bottom mattress and have the quilt drop to about two inches longer/more than the height of the top mattress on three sides. I would have the 'top' just come up to the headboard and put the pillows on top of the quilt.

jcrow 09-15-2012 08:48 AM

I have to climb into my bed also. It's a log bed and it sits high. I have a bed skirt that doesn't match my quilt. It matches my curtains. It use to match my bedspread, but it's long gone. It cost too much to get rid of the curtains and skirt, so I just let things not matchy matchy anymore. Nobody goes in my bedroom but my husband and myself and we don't care that everything doesn't match perfectly. I guess I could make a quilt top with the colors of the curtains. I never thought of that. I could take one down and take it with me to the quilt store. Great idea! I thought it up on my own. Hooray for me!

Wow, what a great idea. I never thought of this. Thanks!!

Hmm, I like mine to drape over the sides by about a foot. This gives us lots of cover just in case DH hogs the quilt. :)

calicojoan 09-16-2012 05:36 AM

I wanted to share that I made bedskirts a few years back for all my beds, and some for a fishing lodge in Alaska. I took an old sheet and cut it the size of the box spring. Then I measured the length from the top of the box spring to the floor. I made the skirt like a quilt, with a front, back and batting in between. I loaded it on my longarm and stitched out a pantograph. Bound it like a quilt on the bottom and attached it to the sheet on the top. I allowed a little extra on the corners and folded it under to make a pleat so it would drape flat. They work out great and you don't have the issues like there are with flimsy bedskirts, because of the batting.

That way you are free to make any size of quilt for the top you like! :)

patdesign 09-16-2012 05:59 AM

Have a sleigh bed so make them to overlap top of sleigh by about 2 inches., Love the fact they don't touch the floor. Also have dust ruffle on guest bed so same thing, NOT to the floor.:)

Grace MooreLinker 09-16-2012 06:06 AM

I like for the quilt to hang down to cover the box springs. also my husband is big /tall so they have to be wide enough to cover him...

jbj137 09-16-2012 06:32 AM

I like mine OverSized.

linhawk 09-16-2012 07:51 AM

I like them to hang about 10" over each side of the mattress. I don't feel tangled up in them and can kickum off when needed. ;-)

Lucy90 09-16-2012 07:57 AM

I have a old brass bed and a antique wood bed. I make my quilts to just cover the box spring. I like the feel of this look of being open. Sometimes the quilt pattern doesn't cooperate but I have added interesting borders.

nativetexan 09-16-2012 08:02 AM

ha, ha. i just got my bed skirt out from under my mattresses. it is mauve and eyelet, not my style anymore. Since i have one of those air mattresses and they are heavy, i will never get it back on again. If i want one, i will look for one taht had elastic.
I suppose you could "make" a bedskirt that way. Having a quilt hang to the floor can be a tripping hazard because the corners will stick out a bit. they usually don't lay flat against the bed due to the batting. You could of course leave out the corners, like quilts made for four poster beds. just a thought.

Greenheron 09-16-2012 08:18 AM

I like a quilt big enough that two people can share so the cover hog doesn't appropriate the whole thing. All our bed covers are people covers.

MattieMae 09-16-2012 08:29 AM

I use bedskirts, so the quilts drape down to the top of the box spring. The quilts are used as blankets so floor length would be too heavy.

quiltmom04 09-16-2012 08:55 AM

I make them a bit longer than the mattress because once you get two people under it, I do not feel like I get enough covers! But it's still short enough to need a bed skirt.

teddysmom 09-16-2012 09:05 AM

I'm making one now that just fits the top of the bed. I want is longer and wider so I'm adding borders--easy solution.

leighway 09-16-2012 12:17 PM

I bought a beautiful white quilt with embroidery, the type you can find for sale occasionally at Cracker Barrel. It tucked under the pillows and hung to the floor. It's just lovely and I put it on the bed...so proud. and then I tried to sleep under it and it was so heavy my feet bent backwards if I was on my back. What a shame...it's been rolled up in a pillow case and stored since 2006.

MimiBug123 09-16-2012 12:23 PM

I like mine to hang to just below the bottom of the mattress. I use neutral colored bedskirts on my beds, so changing quilt colors isn't a problem!

quilting in my60s 09-16-2012 04:32 PM

I bought a bed skirt from Walmart in off white so it goes with whatever quilt or comforter I have on the bed.

danece 09-16-2012 07:54 PM

I have a platform bed, so no box springs, but in my guest room I just have a straight box pleat skirt, it is very neutral and goes with everything

penski 09-16-2012 09:43 PM

personally i like them to drape about 4 inches over the mattress , other wise i feel smothered in the quilt , also i like a bedskirt with the quilt
