It's not "just" a machine, it's memoribilia, a thing of beauty, and useful too boot. We could all <shudder> buy cheap bedding at Target and give gift cards, dropping this "hobby" altogether and save $$$$. I have 9 machines, including 3 featherweights, a serger, yards and yards of fabric, and NO SHAME. I dont pay for TV, make-up, haircuts, and many other "standard" expenses. We all have different priorities.

If you think about the fact that different poles are the best tool for different situations, and different machine are the best tool for different sewing situations, then, yes, I would think it makes a lot of sense.

You're way behind. I have 15 sewing machines, if you count the two sergers. But that isn't really the point. My machines are good at different things. I use the machine that will do what I want at the time. One is for embroidery, one for heavier zigzag, several for straight stitching.
I got the featherweight for taking to classes or traveling. That was my justification. My husband collects N-Scale model trains, and he has WAY more train engines than I have sewing machines. :) |
I count my DH's fishing poles too. I also count his guns and garden tractors as well. If you really don't have the money, then I would not spend it. You could always save your change. I do this when I want something I can't afford it. DH will donate his change to help me raise the money faster. He even helps me sell some bow tuck purses to earn the money. He's a keeper.

Gee, I have 6 machines, (4 of them vintage). I already warned my dh as soon as the opportunity presents itself I am buying one:)

Equating fishing poles/boats/tackle/GPS/depth sounder is what I do. It works. My husband is easy though, so it would probably work without equating. However, sometimes I feel like I have to justify it to myself. Sometimes I don't.
I just ordered a new iPad, to the tune of almost $800 and didn't feel like I had to justify that at all. Hmmm - I think I am dangerous when I am in this mood. Enjoy yourself!

Life is to short to compare what DH has and what I have or don't have. We both decided if we want it and can afford it, GET IT. Be happy.
